Unpopular opinion; Council Skies is really not that good after a few months, bar a few tracks. Haven't listened to it in many months. Have listened to Who Built The Moon and a clutch of his b-sides more in those months actually. Sadly no staying power for me.

Can't see them reworking Free As A Bird or Real Love again, and whether they should is a debate in itself (personally would just leave in the past).
In the use of AI, the next best thing would be to see if they can clean up old live recordings. Heck, at the rate technology is advancing they might even be able to sort out scruffy bootleg recordings. There could be a vast number of tapes that could make up a new live compilation. Would definitely love to have a remixed AI assisted Live At The BBC Vol I & II.

I can understand why Noel had to sing on some songs that Liam couldn't and for intimate, very personal acoustic numbers like Talk Tonight and Half The World Away.
But there's no excuse for not having Liam on this one.
Same goes for a lot of latter Oasis, would have loved to hear Liam on things like Mucky Fingers and Part of the Queue (the former not loved on here, but a song I've always backed). Noel's voice is fine but its just another voice amongst millions like it.
Stick to the band's USP for goodness sake - Noel written songs sung by Liam. Anything outside that remit should only be justified with an exceptionally good reason.

Was watching it again recently, but the one issue I have with the Supersonic documentary is when Noel claims he can't remember Melissa Lim's (the inspiration behind Talk Tonight) face or name, almost bordering on cruel.
For a song so heartfelt and for somebody who meant a lot to him, I highly doubt this. My thinking is that he said that to keep the peace with his then wife!

SOTSOG definitely needs a reissue with everything they can throw at it, but sadly I'm starting to lose hope for it to happen. Noel is busy and doesn't seem to care nor like the album at all. Regarding the DBTT Death in Vegas demos, I don't think they'll ever be released. Unless they somehow get leaked, but what are the chances of that happening. DBTT has a shot. It was the last "Happy Time" for the band when you think of it. Vibes around the band were fantastic the entire year of 2005. Doesn't matter that the album was just as choppy as Heathen Chemistry, for whatever reason the press and fans dug the band during this window. Noel claims they had over 40 songs for this album in various states. We also know they had about 3-4 attempts at the album with the most famous being Death In Vegas. That would be the selling point for a reissue. Much like Be Here Now with the Mystique Tapes. I'd love to hear those sessions but I think I do believe Noel that they are a turd.I think the idea of Death In Vegas producing is more appealing than the actual thing itself. Sonically, I think it would have just been window dressing the songs we heard on Don't Believe The Truth. That may be fine for some, but it wouldn't have been enough to distract us from the mid tempo plod that was their default setting in the 2000s. What would have been great was for songs to be built from the ground up, songs based on the grooves, beats and instrumentations (which I suppose Noel eventually did for Who Built The Moon). Something sonically more textured and awesome would have been great to hear. I'd have expected something of that approach from Death In Vegas, so I'm surprised they willingly worked with Oasis on ready written bad songs like A Bell Will Ring. It still astonishes me how conservative and risk averse they all were when looking back on that 2000s period. Any form of experimentation surely wouldn't have been as poor as the albums that were released in that decade.

Who the fuck wrote this shit? It aged badly. Michael Sandlin is the author of this piece of shit. Judging by the content of this review, he's a right prick. I always get second hand embarrassment when I read pitchfork reviews. They're clueless, crass and painstakingly asinine with their prose, prefering to recant and pass judgement on the recent activities and proclivities of an artist rather than accurately describe and evaluate the music - the entire point of the "review". Much like the Sun, the best place for them is down the toilet. Weirdly, this is when Pitchfork quite proudly wore that self-indulgent pretentious hipster arsehole image as some kind of badge of honour. I think it was a general trend to be offensive and use it as a badge of honour back in the day (see even NME reviews up until to around the 2010s, compare and contrast to today's more polite critical reviews). These days, critiques are much more nuanced and professional. Horribly outdated, borderline offensive with its autistic jibe... it's the kind of superior and pretentious attitude to culture that Gen Z has outright rejected. If there's one thing about the younger generation that I think is superior to millennials like me, its that cultural criticism is not so cynical and pseudo-intellectual. They might not listen to the music I listen to (I don't expect them), indeed I think its a load of rubbish (but I'm old to them at the age of 33!) but publications, and their culture, rarely encourage such vile attitudes as it used to be. That might have lended itself to the whole 'cancel culture' generation but generally, I look back at media and culture from the 90s and 2000s, and I'd quite happily live in a time of sensitive cancel culture if it means avoiding horrible writing like that.

The Beatles Anthology is coming. I’ve heard it’s being cleaned and enhanced up for streaming by Peter Jackson. Long over due in my opinion. Much like the Red and the Blue, the albums will be expanded. I’d like Free As A Bird and Real Love to get the MAL treatment. John’s vocals couldn’t be isolated in 1994. This tech could make it more clear. We shall see. I really hope the Rubber Soul reissue comes soon. Curious about the outtakes and alt versions. Stinks that so much of that album is on the Red reissue now. That’s the downside of the Red/Blue reissue. It’s taken the best tracks from 1962-1966, albums they haven’t gotten to yet and are now featured in 2023. Steals some thunder for down the road. Dont you think those records will be sold as package ? They dont have the appeal of the last ones so my guess is they will release maybe the first 5 together, or Please Please Me / With the Beatles then A Hard Day's Night / Beatles for Sale / Help. But not on their own. Rubber Soul on its own, and another bundle Magical Mystery Tour / Yellow Submarine. Really? Because if The Beatles were to split up after Help, they'd still have been regarded as one of the greatest and most timeless acts of all time. A Hard Day's Night is their first genuine masterpiece. Arguably the greatest straight up, no frills pop album of all time. There's often this argument amongst pseuds that The Beatles only became great when they became 'serious' and 'arty'. A claim amongst people who use music as a fashion statement rather than actually liking or knowing music.

Really baffled by some of the new Red album additions This Boy over I Should Have Known Better or I’ll Follow The Sun? Roll Over Beethoven and You Really Got A Hold On Me over Money or Rock n Roll Music??? I’m Only Sleeping over And Your Bird Can Sing? That one has seemed to grow and grow with esteem. Shocked it was left off. I absolutely adore This Boy and I'm Only Sleeping! No qualms about their inclusion here! That middle eight in This Boy especially.... maybe the greatest middle eight in music ever, for me at least. This performance on Morecambe & Wise in particular. John Lennon is the greatest male singer ever and when somebody asks me why, I show them this performance of the middle eight at 1.03. Incredible. Haven't posted here since the new song was out. I like it, it's not a great song but I feel the sentiments of it. I do prefer the rough Lennon demo though, mainly because it feels like an echo in time and a period of isolation and reflection in Lennon's life before he was killed. That demo is haunting and poignant and that raw quality will always make it a Lennon solo song as opposed to the group think mentality of The Beatles. I feel the same for Real Love and Free As A Bird. On a sentimental level for the Beatles version, I feel its an attempt at a kind of resolution that Paul never really got with John making it sad for me.

I think the only obvious critique of the compilation is the tracklist. I know there was a fan poll (the results of which I believe were kept a secret) but Noel had final say over what and wasn't included. Interesting to see that the compilation was originally billed as 'b-sides and rare songs' meaning bonus tracks 'Sad Song', 'Bonehead's Bank Holiday' and non-album single 'Whatever' were available to vote for as well as all the b-sides. For me 'The Swamp Song', 'I am the Walrus' and 'Stay Young' are the most replaceable songs on the album (though I appreciate the latter isn't a popular opinion). As to what I'd rather hear... 'Whatever' (if we're going by the original concept), 'Cloudburst', 'D'Yer Wanna Be A Spaceman?', 'Step Out'... All the 'Definitely Maybe' and '(WTS)MG?' extras are worthy of a compilation really. That first Pitchfork review is an embarrassment. Pitiful. The new one is infinitely better. 8.0 is a little bit tight though. Inclusion of Swamp Song is bizarre, I struggle to think why Noel included it? Is it supposed to work as some kind of intermission track?

A great write up on 'Now and Then' from Rob Sheffield in Rolling Stone: And this is exciting, about how the early two-track recordings are sounding now, thanks to the machine-learning "de-mixing" technology: Bit concerned by talk of 'I Am the Walrus' losing some of its sampled King Lear dialogue at the end, though. I love all that! It's such a weirdly perfect way to end that song. It's wonderful when these remixes reveal aspects to the recordings that we had not been aware of before, but it's crushing when other things which had been apparent in the original mixes become harder to make out, sometimes to the point of erasion (e.g. Paul's off-mic goofing around on 'Savoy Truffle', some of the studio chatter at the end of 'Helter Skelter', and what sounds like a baby cooing at the very last second of 'I'm so tired').
Reading this is gold dust! Getting ever closer to hearing every Beatles recording in pure clarity. I can't believe that the stereo mixes (even the pointless 2009 remasters) is still the dominant audio to listen to the greatest musical act ever. The mono boxset is great but limited (and isn't on streaming), so it's somewhat shocking to think that these songs were left in a poor stereo quality until 2017 with the Sgt Pepper remix in 2017. And who'd have ever thought Peter Jackson would become part of Beatles legend. Along with Giles Martin, nobody in the 21st century has had a bigger influence in protecting and enhancing their legacy.

The worst thing about this is realising As You Were is 6 years old. Felt like yesterday it was released.
Still, I love that album. Alongside Who Built The Moon, easily my favourite post-Oasis albums, probably prefer them to any Oasis albums post 90s too. What a treat that both were released a month apart.

I'm thrilled this is happening, and I'm super happy for everyone who will get to the shows. But FFS, Liam, can't you do ANYTHING in the USA? It's been freaking forever, and while people bitch about Noel's setlists or venues or whatever when he tours here, at least HE TOURS HERE. I was really excited about trying to catch one of these shows and holding out hope for something in the States, but now I'm counting on you all to take a ton of photos and videos for me. Jeez, he no does America? Surely there's an audience there for Liam still?

He gave so many people another chance of Knebworth, whether that be returning or going for the very first time and now he’s doing it again giving the closest experience you’ll get to seeing Oasis back when they only had a single albums worth of song, long before anyone had heard of a Champagne Supernova. Not everyone will agree, but I don’t see any issue with it. It comes across as something he didn’t need to do but wanted to, that gives younger fans a chance to finally hear a lot of these songs live. Had it been a 50+ date tour I might have seen it as a bit of a cash grab, but it merely seems like a short celebration of his origins. Plus, I’ve just never bought this argument that he’s exploiting Noel by singing the older stuff. It’s not like he’s billing it as Oasis and saying “come hear my songs” or anything; he knows who did what. But knowing that also works in his favour, as of all their albums, its probably the best example of how his vocals made great songs truly special. True, but it also gives all the older folk a chance to hear these songs live for the fist time! Easy to forget, but the Oasis setlist from 2000 onwards was so boringly predictable, another half assed effort from Noel. Liam's already shown way more variety and surprises in his setlists than Oasis did in their last decade, to give us all the deeper cuts from Definitely Maybe era is going to be fantastic. I assume it's his usual live band with hopefully a few appearances from Bonehead?

In terms of that contemporary rock sound of the 90s, you can definitely hear the Nirvana comparison in Oasis. That loud, raw and dirty sound. Oasis success was primarily down to old fashioned hooks and melody with a raw contemporary guitar sound.
Would have been useful if they'd kept that Nirvana style ragged edge to their music but everything after Be Here Now was too safe sonically. The more Oasis retreated into influences that didn't go beyond the 60s and 70s, the more derivative they became.
Indeed, everything from Heathen Chemistry onwards sounds like it was recorded in the 1960s, something Noel's solo career indulges in far too often. That's not a compliment.

I had a thought this morning about the whole "this should have been the third album" thing that even Noel says now. In hindsight, it's easy to say and it's true but for The Masterplan to be their third record, Oasis' full history should have had to be different. Because The Masterplan only exists because it's a b-sides compilation, that came after Be Here Now, with songs voted for by fans. Without these three things, it wouldn't exist, as it is. First, these songs had all been released in the past 4 years. So, to make an album out of these songs, they would have had to not been used as b-sides. Second, the songs were all recorded at different times depending on what single needed b-sides or when Noel was in San Francisco. If they had used any other song as a b-side, these songs wouldn't have been recorded when they were and with the members of the band that played on them. For example, there's a good chance that Whitey's would have been drumming. But Tony was perfect for the songs he played on that ended up on The Masterplan. Whitey could have played them, sure. But imagine Headshrinker with Whitey on drums. It wouldn't have the same vibe. And I'm sure Noel would have found a way to add too much to Talk Tonight and Half The World Away if he had taken more time to think about them, etc. So the songs themselves would have been different. Then, there's the fan favorite aspect of it. Noel's an idiot sometimes when it comes to choosing songs to put on a record, by his own admission. So I have no doubt we wouldn't have Stay Young, which Noel recently said he didn't particularly like, or Going Nowhere. And if it was a proper record, we probably wouldn't have had I Am The Walrus either. What made this compilation what it is is us, the fans. Those were, at the time, our favourite songs collectively. And if they hadn't been released as b-sides, we couldn't have chosen them and Noel would have ended up choosing the songs. Who knows what would have been on there. Lastly, Be Here Now was disappointing to many. And no one can argue that's it's not too long. But that was coming after Morning Glory. The Masterplan is a great follow up to Morning Glory. But maybe it's enjoyed so much because it came after Be Here How. Otherwise, it would have been received as a follow up to MG and probably a continuity of MG. People probably wouldn't appreciate it as much as they do. So it's easy to go "ah this should have been the third album instead of Be Here Now. But that didn't happen because of one decision. It was a perfect storm that gave us Be Here Now AND The Masterplan. Not to mention we wouldn’t have had the added experience of uncovering all the hidden gems. Oasis’ strong back catalogue made discovering this band that much more fun - fun that wouldn’t have existed if the Masterplan was an album. I'd agree. The hype was real, over a two to three year period people were bombarded with quality and quantity in equal measure. I don't think that hype would have been there without the b-sides. The idea that these b-sides should have made up the third album also forgets that without them, they wouldn't have bolstered their live shows in the way they did in 1995/96. In the whole battle of Britpop and how Oasis toppled everyone else, the critics bang on about social class, attitudes, album qualities, but they do neglect the fact they Oasis were simply more prolific than anyone else. Let's be honest, nobody is listening to Blur b-sides. The idea of throwing everything at it all at once is something we'll never see again. For as long as we live, we'll never see another act release that much quality in such a short timeframe.

(a) The team has far too much depth and quality (b) Guardiola is a brilliant manager
and last but not least...
(c) They'll always find a way to cheat and spend their way out of trouble to buy more trophies.
Tainted club, success or no success.
Arsenal - their next best competitor - are sadly not winning the league. City will win it at a canter, in fact the failure to do so, like the time Liverpool won the league, is an embarrassment for City given how far superior in resources they are to the rest of them. Premier League is a joke.

Hearing Pretty Boy live changed my mind on the track. Really motors along and the chorus feels bigger. Recorded track is still a tough love for me. I don't dislike the studio version, it's one of Noel's better produced tracks by himself, but its just a wee bit lightweight. Could do with being a bit beefier in the production ala Robert Smith version.
