I'd say Allen is probably looking the favourite of all semi finalists. He's been consistent all year, hasn't put a foot wrong all tournament. Should be clear favourite but Selby's a grinder and excels in things like this.
Ideally, would want a Si v Allen final. A young prodigy story is always great, but Allen's career has been dramatic and almost been leading up to this kind of thing so would be a great story for him.

Started watching Succession. 4 episodes in, its pretty good to be fair. Loadsa people said it gets amazing so gonna keep at it Brian Cox is a legend.

Rianne Downey is known on the folk scene in Scotland before going down a more pop route. Did a lot of the local clubs around the central belt and is from Belshill. Nice lass, who can actually sing, unlike that jumped up yob Meighan.

Not even close. Any album cycle with Lock All The Doors in its run of singles is already the worst. What's wrong with Lock All The Doors? 😬 Horrible vocals. Really is one where the ‘Liam should have sung it’ cliche rings most true. That and it’s a terrible recording. All boring guitar chug. Very definition of dadrock.

Can someone explain something to me... It's always made me feel uncomfortable listening to '08/'09 versions of Cigarettes and Alcohol. At the end of the 'you gotta fake it' run it always sounds as though Liam shouts 'you gotta 'rape' it'. Now I don't know if this was just his voice falling apart or what. But it doesn't seem like something he'd say. But it's absolutely what it sounds like. I'm sure Noel would have stopped this, no? Am I just mishearing this? I remember there being some level of discomfort on this forum at the time around it so it definitely wasn’t just a case of ‘times were different’, just a turn of phrase used by idiots at the time (football manager Alan Pardew caused uproar when he said it on MOTD, and everyone knows what a prick he is). It’s a horrible expression and no idea what the hell he was thinking about.

I don't think that is necessarily the case. I don't find anyone who thinks it's a flawless album, for me it seriously dips in the middle with She Taught, Be Careful and Black & White Sunshine. Not a bad song amongst them, but didn't do much for me personally and a wee bit repetitive in places. What I do feel however is that, either side of that middle part where it succeeds, the songs vindicate that Noel can branch out from his usual influences and be a bit more ambitious, and the rest of the tunes absolutely hit the mark in that aspect while not forgoing his craftsmanship for songs. This ain't Damon Albarn meandering rubbish, it's still good old fashioned pop but in different style. That surprise element is a far cry from anything Oasis related since the 2000s. I've not heard anyone describe it as flawless but there's a small group of people who describe it as the best thing he's done post-'Be Here Now', give it more praise than I believe it deserves and make out that certain songs are much better than they are. Don't get me wrong I like the record but I agree with your statement that doesn't quite hold up in the middle. Personally I can give or take Noel writing songs outside of his usual comfort zone. As long as the songs are good that's all I really care about. I think it is clearly better than anything post-BHN, mainly because the bar is so low.

I think that 'WBTM?' is underrated by a significant portion of Noel's fan base who find it to be an alienating detour from the type of music they come to expect from Noel and too far removed from their own personal musical preferences to really enjoy. At the same time however I believe that it is somewhat overrated by a small, but vocal minority within his fan base who want Noel to be something more than he is.As far as I'm concerned it's simply a refreshing change from his usual style of songwriting. As an album it's a good listen and contains plenty of interesting highlights but in my opinion doesn't have the quite the same high level of consistency his previous two solo albums had. Thanks to David Holmes 'WBTM?' has some of the best production on any Noel project ever. His input and pushback of Noel's songwriting instincts took these songs to places that just would never have happened had he not been collaborated with. Of course this doesn't necessarily lead to better songs and Noel's always known the songs are everything. I think some 'WBTM?' fans forget Noel told us some time back that his next LP will be more of a back to basics, self produced endeavour. If anything Pretty Boy is a surprising foot in the door for the newer sounds he implied he wouldn't return to for a while. Didn't Noel also say some time back he's still collaborating with Holmes but it's a slow process so another record with him will be some time away but in the works regardless? The whole "cosmic pop" era came crashing down I believe when he wasn't actively working with Holmes on those EPs. He was on his own for those and it showed because outside of This Is The Place, there was nothing really interesting that came out of them, and some of that material was amongst the most dull he's ever done (Wandering Star...). There was no one there in the studio to challenge him like during the 'Moon' sessions, and he was just keeping up with appearances and straight up lying to himself and the fans he really wanted to have creative ambition. I expected better from him to be honest. Wandering Star was when the alarm bells started ringing. What an awful dreary song that was. I think it proved he was reverting back on the ambitious sounds he tried in Who Built The Moon. I adore that album and it’s a crushing blow to see him go back to dull as dishwater music. Both Noel and Liam’s solo careers are, creatively at least, seriously flagging at the moment and need fresh input from new creative collaborators (that doesn’t mean aural beige producers like Sardy) Noel in particular, this whole self producing is just not cutting it. Show some ambition for god’s sake.

I agree. For me that album marks the beginning of the end for Noel The whole Team Liam/Noel Thing still going on. What year do you think this is, 2017? Whatever year it is, it’s pathetic beyond belief.

I’m not surprised. Just seeing the reaction to something as tame as Council Skies being lambasted for being a bit different, and you know you’re dealing with large swathes of fans who don’t listen to anything beyond dull generic indie ladrock.

Here's another loaded statement, The Stone Roses debut is wildly overrated, with at least four duff tunes on it. The outro on I Am The Resurrection is meandering bollocks that ruins a good first half of a song, there's absolutely no need to listen to it after the final chorus, time to switch the album off. It's a good album at best, nothing more. But their shoddy reunion and hilariously awful comeback singles showed that the myth overrides any real quality. John Squire is a technically brilliant but derivative guitarist and Ian Brown has one of the worst voices in music, adding to his appalling lyrics that are just word salad. That, and he is and always was the biggest prick in music. I will always respect the level of generational hatred you have for the Roses and their music 😂 Don’t get me wrong, I think they’re decent at best. They’d be a lot better too without the knobhead frontman though.

I like Council Skies, but again, nothing that blows me away. A pleasant listen which the album is shaping up to be. I think it'll be better than his first two albums, which isn't saying much as they've aged badly for me (first half of his debut is good but the second half is a real slog, Chasing Yesterday ramps up the dadrock to "Matt Hancock in a leather jacket" vibe barring Riverman, The Song Remains, and the odd other track) but I can't see Council Skies being anything other than a step back from Who Built The Moon. The first album is Scottish fucking Blend tea, the second is warm can of Stella found behind the fridge, Who Built The Moon was like drinking a concoction of herbal tea with magic mushrooms while Council Skies is shaping up to be a mug of ovaltine before bed. Which is fine, I do like a mug of Ovaltine before bed, but I'll always remember the magic mushrooms more. I think his first two deserve more credit than this. They weren't as exciting as WBTM, but they still had fantastic songs on them. What a Life, The Death of You and Me, Broken Arrow, While the Song Remains the Same, Ballad of the Mighty I - the playlist you could make from those two records is top. Add in stuff like Alone on the Rope or bangers like In the Heat of the Moment, and I do think he got his career off with some great tunes. That said, there is some plodding and flavourless mush in there. Potentially strong tracks were wrecked like that on NGHFB and a something like The Girl With X-Ray Eyes is a horror-show of everything I don't want from Noel. But overall, the positives outweigh the negatives on both records - and nothing on this one so far has come even close to the highlights of the first two. This tune pisses all over the Council Skies teasers so far, for me, and it wasn't even a single: I agree, nothing from these new ones tops Broken Arrow, or Death of You & Me, or Everybody's on the Run. That's top tier Noel for me. What A Life seems a bit tame for me these days, and everything has been said about how If I Had A Gun was butchered on record. Dream On..... it's okay. Being reminded, I'm probably being a bit harsh on that debut, but the last few songs stink the place out unfortunately which lingers in my mind unfortunately.

I still don't quite know what the hell they were doing with that second half. It's utterly dire and tuneless so is it trying to be 'esoteric', is it trying to be experimental, is it trying to be abstract? Because it's none of those things. It's derivative, plodding pseudo-philosophising bullcrap. Maybe the worst 'side 2' to an album ever. Outside of the 4-5 truly awful songs, it's only a solid if unspectacular EP. The album's like taking a piss on a bowl of cornflakes. Yeah. I was expecting something really interesting and out-there from the second half based on pre release interviews and reviews and at the time I would have been reasonably happy with that even if the songs weren't really there. But they were never experimental or psychedelic in the slightest, just because a song is called The Nature Of Reality or has a few echo-y effects on the vocals it doesn't make it a psychedelic tune. It's just basic 60's inspired rock. One thing that really annoys me and it's quite petty I know is how certain Noel/Liam/Oasis songs are described as 'experimental' and critisized for not following the expected formula when they really aren't that different. The last few songs of DOYS + GOYHHL are barely experimental even by the mid 60's standards which is what they were aiming for. BE was never 'out there or experimental' it just had a couple of overly long outro's, WBTM wasn't experimental either, Noel just took some inspiration from 80's bands like New Order. Nothing they've ever done outside of remixes or the AA mixed tracks from HFB have been remotely experimental. I get so annoyed when people criticize certain songs for being too 'experimental' see people hating on WBTM for being too different when it would barely be considered anything other than standard pop/rock 40 years ago. DOYS was a rock/pop album like everything else they ever did and I can't excuse poor songwriting for the sake of it being something different when it really wasn't. I agree, Noel and Oasis have never been experimental in terms of song structures. Another example is all that sound effects on stuff like Who Feels Love was just window dressing on what is just a bog standard mid tempo dirge of a song. Who Built The Moon is closest in the sense that there is a stylistic shift with more varied influences than before, and sonically much more expansive and interesting than anything he'd done since the brickwalled early Oasis albums (a technique I absolutely love). There was varied rhythms all over the place on that album that didn't just stick to mid tempo plodding. For example, pumping some soul vibes into songs like Keep On Reaching did the trick for me. The end of Dig Out Your Soul just bemused me. It's just so so bad, a harbinger for Beady Eye unfortunately.

I actually dislike most British ‘indie’ music, stuff like the Stone Roses, Smiths, The La’s is all a bit dull (I’m aware all three of those bands sound different to each other) In the same vein, Britpop is the single most overrated period of music ever, you have 2 or 3 good bands and the rest is derivative rubbish. Oasis are not Britpop, they are a Rock band who came out at the same time. Early Manics and Suede are great also but the rest of the bands can do one.
