This song is honestly one of the most gorgeous thing they've ever done. Ironically this is the one song in that broadcast they ran into technical difficulties and used the album track or guide vocal dubbed over live shots. Well, that would be ironic if the song was called "Always Performed Live" or something. But that's why I posted it - gorgeous song, gorgeous visuals, just overall a think of beauty. It's basically the official music video for it, now.

Everyday Life really holds up well, far and away their best since Viva La Vida.
While it's not close to that album which for me is still their best, I think the nucleus of Everyday Life being potentially their best album is there. The full band efforts are great, and with more of those songs, it could be the best thing they did. Just a wee bit too much Chris 'solo' efforts for my liking, but that's to be expected for an album that is seen as a stop-gap and wasn't overthought.

I think on the whole I prefer both the neon explosion of Mylo and the gothic sadness of Ghost Stories, but it does come down basically to how I'm feeling on the day. If I had to do a personal ranking of their whole discography: 1. Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends 2. Ghost Stories 3. A Rush of Blood to the Head 4. Mylo Xyloto 5. Parachutes 6. Everyday Life 7. X&Y 8. A Head Full of Dreams

A Head Full of Dreams In fairness, aside from Head Full of Dreams, you could make the case of there being the foundations of the 'best since VLV' in MX, Ghost Stories and Everyday Life. MX definitely had the potential. Should have really pursued the guitar electro rock thing to the maximum. I'm talking about riff heavy tunes like Hurts Like Heaven, Princess of China, Major Minus, Paradise and Charlie Brown being the foundations of that one. Should have ditched the ballads and acoustic ones which disjoint the album for me personally. Ghost Stories - a bit too lightweight for me on some tunes and unsubtle Hallmark style lyrics. Would prefer more oblique stuff. Ghost Story and All Your Friends should have gone on the album (for this moment, forgetting the lyrical contents that don't fit that album but that's the quality I'm thinking of). Songs in that vein but again, Magic, Midnight and O are some of the greatest Coldplay songs ever.

Songs in that vein but again, Magic, Midnight and O are some of the greatest Coldplay songs ever. I can't imagine this will be a popular opinion on an indie-rock forum, but I'd put A Sky Full of Stars right up there with the best songs of Ghost Stories and honestly as one of the best tracks the band have ever done. It's just undeniable pop music to me - iconic chords, fantastic melody, makes people sing and dance whenever it's played. Love the production, love the simplicity, love the way it gives the album that sense of cathartic release before the gorgeously calm afterglow of O (Fly On). On a personal note, the way it brings the story of the record to a close that feels positive and empowering has seriously brought the "last act" (Oceans - A Sky Full of Stars - O) very close to my heart in recent months. And yeah, the lyrics on the album aren't Bob Dylan, but to be honest I don't ever really expect that from Chris. Outside of Viva and Mylo, he's always been a very blunt songwriter who's earnest sincerity balances with the obviousness of his lyrics. On this album, I'm fine the with it. It is, before anything else, a low-key break-up pop album, and I think the lyrics work for that. I don't know, I just think if you put it on at night-time and really soak in it, it's the most complete and emotionally engaging album they've done outside of Viva. It's like an icy world of stars and dark blue and sadness that finally bursts in a new and brighter day at the end. Gorgeous.

It's like an icy world of stars and dark blue and sadness that finally bursts in a new and brighter day at the end. Gorgeous. I appreciate that, and especially as the album is close to your heart. I get your point about Sky Full of Stars, I think I was sniffy about its EDM influences back when it was released in an attempt to be cool. But years on, I think it's a good tune and merits a place on the album. It's not a bad album, but undercooked in many areas - I think they should have dispensed with any kind of 'heartbreak' theme and made it a night time mellow album (thus enabling a place for the excellent pair Ghost Story and All Your Friends) My criticisms of latter Coldplay is what I call the 'lightweight' material, and songs like True Love or Always In My Head for example seem very bare bones and too simple for me, and that's my biggest criticism of A Head Full of Dreams which is full of lightweight songs, like the risible Amazing Day (handful of others that I can't quite recall the name of). Much of the criticism is towards their more mainstream leanings but that's not the issue - the collaborations with the likes of Rihanna, Beyonce and Avicii are all really effective and successful tunes, heavy hitters that are really enjoyable. The main issue is the said lightweight filler for me which is surprising just given how talented and hardworking Chris Martin is.

drive.google.com/file/d/12B0Jl6sqwM8YzDgKev9ehq270-1i4KgV/viewLittle clip of Chris playing a new song on piano. Nice little ditty, your standard Coldplay piano-breakup stuff. Can't really get the measure of it from a rough, out-of-tune half minute sang through a phone, but it sounds nice enough. The moon is mentioned, perhaps hinting that the next album will indeed have a space theme. I'd compare it to Wedding Bells from their earlier work.

Looks like Coldplay are back on May 7 with something. “Higher Power”. We know they finally locked down all the naming rights to Music of the Spheres. alienradio.fm/
