I'm glad you put Shiver and White Shadows. Those are two I'd have on my top 15, along with Charlie Brown and A Rush of Blood to the Head (Up&Up too). I’ve always felt that “Shiver” was the quintessential Coldplay song. Kinda like “Some Might Say” is for Oasis. It really shows off the best of all parts of the band. Pretty bad ass live too.

Listening to Up&Up, I really enjoy it but I just can't get over how poorly arranged and produced the album version is. The electronic drums are so loud and hollow that it ruins the ethereal feel conveyed by the guitars, choir, and strings. I'm glad we have an official live version of it that really drives home the beautifully ethereal, Oasis meets U2/punch the air of heaven-on-earth-while crying tears of joy feel, because the album version was such a missed opportunity.
Fuck Stargate.

I've never been a big fan of Shiver, to be honest. Quite dislikeable lyrics and a sound that seems more like they're trying to be another band rather than than having their own voice. I think the lads themselves aren't fond of it either, particularly Guy, and I do understand why. The melody is lovely but it captures the biggest problems with Parachutes. If I had the choice, I'd prefer if Don't Panic had been their first single; that song is perfect and sums up who they are a lot more. My top ten today:
- Violet Hill - Lovers in Japan - Reign of Love - The Scientist - A Sky Full of Stars - Don't Panic - Chinese Sleep Chant - Hurts Like Heaven - Cry, Cry, Cry - Magic

I think nobody cited "The Hardest Part" yet. I'm not the biggest Coldplay fan but I know most of the albums and I do consider that song like one of their best. The chorus melody is really pretty.

Shiver's an odd one - never seen a middle ground with it. Either like it or dislike it, me personally I was shocked to find it was the lead single from Parachutes. It certainly ain't no Supersonic. I like every other song on that album much better.

Not enough love for Life in Technicolor II I've combined the opener of the album with it for a more complete tune, whenever I hear it. Sounds great.

Why is everyone naming the few Coldplay songs I'm not a fan of? 😭
The Hardest Part is the weakest of their old piano-rock tracks, while Life in Technicolour ii was rightly stripped back to an enigmatic instrumental instead of releasing it as the "too obvious single" Eno pointed it out as. They're not bad songs, but they're a bit Coldplay-By-Numbers and I'd take Square One and Glass of Water from their respective records if I was to pick. Hell, give me Til Kingdom Come / Rainy Day if push comes to shove.

Hardest Part is crap.

White Shadows and Square One in particular are great. The Hardest Part is alright but it doesn't stand out as a highlight to me, though I do prefer it over a few other songs on X&Y. The alternative version of Talk is an interesting listen but I don't think it's as good as the final version. And yeah Life in Technicolour is better as an instrumental.

Square One is such a great tune, one of Jonny Buckland's finest efforts too. One of the rare Coldplay songs where the guitar really drives the song.
In fact, an overall great band effort, everyone's on top form. A really great piece of music.

I’m of the stance that the lyrics make “Life ii” an even better song. Cool instrumental, better overall product with lyrics. Great tune.

The single version is just a bit of a bland radio-rock song for me; it takes an enigmatic riff with mysterious production and turns it into just a backing track for just another knowingly stadium chorus. Robs the music of all it's intrigue, and that's precisely because of how little like Clocks it is. Whereas Clocks is soaked in atmosphere due to the less obvious chorus and the winding instrumental, Life in Technicolour ii feels like it was purpose-built for the radio and doesn't bring that historical, romantic vibe that the rest of the album does. Compare how in the album version that "ooh-oh!" feels unknowable and distant, like it could be a battle cry or a lament or a revolutionary charge, but in the single version it's just another Coldplay "ooh-oh!" middle-eight due to being re-contextualised between two quite generic "shout-the-vowel" choruses. Nope, the right decision was made for sure, in my opinion.

My top 10
The Scientist Strawberry Swing White Shadows Everything's Not Lost Clocks Life in Technicolor ii Yellow Arabesque Fix You Amsterdam
Up&Up would be in it, if the Stargate production wasnt that sterile, damn they murdered the song. The live album is the one I listen to these days.
