"Product" is the operative word! The single version is just a bit of a bland radio-rock song for me; it takes an enigmatic riff with mysterious production and turns it into just a backing track for just another knowingly stadium chorus. Robs the music of all it's intrigue, and that's precisely because of how little like Clocks it is. Whereas Clocks is soaked in atmosphere due to the less obvious chorus and the winding instrumental, Life in Technicolour ii feels like it was purpose-built for the radio and doesn't bring that historical, romantic vibe that the rest of the album does. Compare how in the album version that "ooh-oh!" feels unknowable and distant, like it could be a battle cry or a lament or a revolutionary charge, but in the single version it's just another Coldplay "ooh-oh!" middle-eight due to being re-contextualised between two quite generic "shout-the-vowel" choruses. Nope, the right decision was made for sure, in my opinion. It’s a great coldplay song. Nothing is robbed on the lyrical version. I wouldn't call it great. I like the verses, but the chorus is a bit plain and for sure robs the instrumental of a sense of mystery, in my opinion. The album version makes me think of a blood-red sunrise, of Eastern revolutions, of centuries-old romance. The single version makes me think of Jo Whiley and the shouty pop-rock hooks you hear in Tesco's. Still, it worked fine for Prospekt's March and Viva turned out quite well, so all's well that ends well.

The album version works so well as it leaves you wanting more.
The more is the full song version.
Would be better if it came back to it at some point on the album. I never gave Prospekts March more than a cursory listen apart from that and the clipped version of Lovers in Japan

My top 10 The Scientist Strawberry Swing White Shadows Everything's Not Lost Clocks Life in Technicolor ii Yellow Arabesque Fix You Amsterdam Up&Up would be in it, if the Stargate production wasnt that sterile, damn they murdered the song. The live album is the one I listen to these days. A Top 10 is tough! They've written so many classic tunes. It would literally change for me week to week. Yellow The Scientist Amsterdam See You Soon Strawberry Swing Don't Panic Warning Sign O Low The Escapist

Life in Technicolor definitely works better as an instrumental. That being said, I still really like the vocal version and the way it opens the Prospekt's March EP and parallels the parent album works perfectly.
In that era they made very few bad decisions. If anything their biggest misstep was not releasing more stuff from the vault given how much of a creative roll they were on at the time.

I thought Viva La vida would have been on every top 10. Im very surprised I consider it as thr perfect pop/rock song. When it first came out in spring of 2008 I was totally blown away by it. Early morning drop. Sonically it was nowhere Coldplay had ever been. Bursting with energy. I think it gets dinged now (unfairly) because it was extremely over played, over exposed and put in way too many commercials/movies/tv shows.

Yeah it's kind of their Wonderwall, the one tune even non-Coldplay (or music) fans know Great song tho, I was dismissive of it at first but now that I've grown out of my contrary person phase I can fully appreciate it

I find it so interesting how the perception of this album changed for many as 2020 went on. At the start of 2020, it was hailed as a return to form for Coldplay and was a stepping stone for a more "blockbuster" album coming soon. Then COVID hit and as it dragged on, it seemed like many people (critics especially) forgot that Everyday Life was that type of an album and was more like a "blockbuster" album that was still to come.
I still like this album, tbh. It's not "Album of the Year"-worthy, to me, but I like how it mixes the old & new of the band with a unique international spin on all of that. It also has two of my favorite Coldplay songs (Arabesque, Champion of the World) on it so that makes the album sweeter.

Before Everyday Life was even a known thing, the rumors were a “unique” album would come out in the fall of 2019 with no tour followed in 6-8 months by a more “traditional” type LP and a huge world tour behind it. Coldplay even placed an ad for “Music of the Spheres” in the booklet for Everyday Life. Nobody could have anticipated what came next as the calendar flipped to 2020. It suck. One day Chris will be able to explain what was supposed to happen and how it was adjusted. Coldplay were semi teasing Music of the Spheres” back in August/September on Instagram by posting older videos and if you took the first letter of the song name it was literally spelling out “Music of the Spheres”. Could it be just a coincidence? Could be but it was so dead on. Eventually Phil Harvey realized fans were too in on this on Reddit and they’ve since abandoned it. Also “The Race” leaked over the summer from the Ghost Stories sessions. Many people believe that will be on MOTS and a big single.

Realise that covid may have disrupted plans, but then again, the virus was already doing its damage for half a year by then so a scheduled release surely can't have been put back?

We shall see what happens. No idea what Coldplay were doing last fall with the reels slowly spelling out “Music of Spheres” but it was definitely interesting. I’ve seen people fight over it has intent and others coincidence. I lean the former. I think a lot of bands/artists and their planned releases are gonna cling to dear life for a late summer, early fall 2021 drop of new music as a result of the vaccine getting to more people and herd immunity built up in many industrialized nations. Safer to tour. That is just a guess but it makes sense.

But Coldplay could easily tour months after a release and not be affected by it? They'll undoubtedly sell out their tour.

I've only just now given this album a fair shot. And while some of the tracks aren't for me, more than half of this album is actually great. 4/5 for what is there. Glad I finally gave it a proper listen.

Glad I finally gave it a proper listen. I'm with you. The fully-fleshed out songs are some of the best and most well-thought-out songs the band has done in years and the snippet tracks patch together a beautiful scenery. I hate that, toward the end of 2020, people started panning the album because it was disappointment after four years of waiting...totally neglecting the fact that they were set to release a blockbuster companion album until COVID delayed it.

Glad I finally gave it a proper listen. The tracks that contain the “full” band really shine. There are about 6-7 of them. A lot of the material sounds like solo Chris Martin stuff. Not that it’s bad in any way but doesn’t feel like Coldplay. This album overall was a huge huge improvement over the turd that came before it. Yuck!

There were a few YouTube review channels with decent-sized viewership (Middle 8, SpectrumPulse) that had some negative comments toward, especially Middle 8 which made a video on The Decline of Coldplay that pointed to Everyday Life not selling well as being an example of it. I heard comments that there were too many snippet pieces and the album wasn't good enough as a fully-fleshed piece but honestly fuck 'em.

This song is honestly one of the most gorgeous thing they've ever done. Ironically this is the one song in that broadcast they ran into technical difficulties and used the album track or guide vocal dubbed over live shots.
