Chris did say recently that “Us Against The World” was finally nailed. And that came out 9 years ago.........

Well Coldplay have a gig this coming weekend and things are coming to a head quickly. They've heavily teased "Music of The Spheres" on Instagram by posting videos that spell out the title of their next "project" over the last 2 weeks. Strong bet "The Race" drops this Friday and maybe even album news. Yes I know "The Race" leaked back in July but we aren't sure from what sessions. Could be Ghost or AHFOD. This guy pretty much sums up what has been happening since November. Aside from tweets saying it will get an eventual release, and that folk have heard it, any indications that The Race is going to be part of this new album cycle? Although they wish to release it some time, I wouldn't be surprised if it hasn't even been considered for the new album.

Damn for a band who's really disliked these days, Coldplay have a damn strong following even this thread is going pretty strong a year or so after their last album, which was good listening but rarely listen too these days. I said before not a real fan of anything they really did after Viva La Vida, Chris Martin and co really have done amazing to keep themselves at that top tier table of biggest bands around. You got to give respect to that even Oasis didn't really keep that level of their early year's success everywhere, but Coldplay have.

Like Liam says in “Supersonic”, Oasis was never gonna do 10 rounds. They were more like a speeding Ferrari. Every once in awhile you lose control.

First and foremost: there is something to be said about Coldplay's first three albums, they still had that indie rock appeal to them, that kinetic force, they sounded like a rock band, then all of sudden they lost it.
Later they released Viva La Vida which was great and pointed a cool direction they could have follow, but no, instead they entered their "Maroon 5 phase" as I like to call, they became too poppy for my tastes, they were more worried about their popularity than their music.
I wanted to hear Everyday Life, but before there was still one album left which I haven't heard yet, Ghost Stories. Subpar album but with some cool moments like Midnight, it's not the saccharine party like both MX and AHFOD, which is great thing, but the album suffers from sameness and it's a bit boring for that.
Hell, why left this song out of the album? It badly needed something like this.

I've really come to love Ghost Stories. Concise, themed, and with such a feel of gothic sadness to it. I certainly wouldn't include the title track. That rougher folk sound would stick out like a sore thumb in such a well-crafted world of icy drums and synthesisers. Honestly, I don't think the tracklist could be improved; it's a perfect journey from obsession to acceptance of break-up. Oceans - A Sky Full of Stars - O is such a beautiful triptych for that. And if you get the chance to listen to it all at night on headphones, do so. It's not an attention-grabbing album, but when you have the space to submerge yourself in it, the emotions come through so strongly.
The good thing is that pop-heads seem to appreciate it. Whenever there's a thread about best breakup albums or albums with a great story on a pop forum, Ghost Stories always gets the praise it deserves. My only criticisms would be the guitar solo being too quiet on Another's Arms and that I dislike the music videos from that era.

Not many songs from AHFOD still resonate with me and pop into my head, but A Head Full of Dreams and Birds are good listens from that album. Adventure of a Lifetime is good too, but the outro always pisses me off for how Jonny's wonderful solo is buried by those pointless vocals. AHFOD and Birds feel just right, though, and are the only two songs on that album where the production and arrangements work perfectly for the song.

The Scientist came on today via shuffle and caught me unawares.
Probably their best song ever and may be my favourite of theirs, but it's just one that I don't often listen to. It's a really beautiful song and that stops it from being black and bleak, but at the same time its unbearably sad. The saddest song I've ever listened to.
I listen to a lot of 'depressing' songs but there's always a certain coldness to them all that lacks that bit of humanity, whereas The Scientist has that humanity to it. For that reason, it's their masterpiece - I can't think of too many genuinely depressing songs that I would say are genuinely beautiful at the same time but somehow this song manages it.

I honestly think it's one of the best songs ever written Chris really had it going with those first two records

Not talked about enough, even amongst fans. I'd agree that it might be the truest realisation of the vision of AHFOD: it makes you want to dance, but in a way that isn't cloying. It's nocturnal and carefree and romantic in a way that few of the other songs from that era are, and I do enjoy the way it flows between the tracks around it. There's also some nice political undertones (guilty of nothing but geography) that looking back might have been the seeds of Everyday Life.

Violet Hill 2. Reign of Love 3. Lovers in Japan 4. The Scientist 5. A Sky Full of Stars For it's euphoric feel, it's a really sad song when reading the lyrics and realising what its about. It's lyrically one of their best. I could go on and on about it, maybe in another post, but as with the best political songs, it steers away from political grandstanding and sloganeering about bastard politicians and gets to the heart of the matter - namely human beings and the empathy towards them and their situation. That's the best form of protest in my opinion and it really hits hard when a songwriter writes from an individuals perspective of suffering and not about the politicians. Case in point is Travis did a song back in 2003 called Beautiful Occupation slating the world leaders supporting the Iraq War. A fine song, but not as overtly emotional and personal as a song like Orphans. That sadness and empathy gives the fuel for activism in my opinion. And forgetting the meaning behind the song, it's just a really great vibrant tune. The phrase 'return to form' is such an overused cliche, but last years tunes really were a return to form for Coldplay. It finally felt like the band I loved in sixth form that released Viva La Vida was back.

Slightly different lyrics and more rocking. A sense of urgency to that version. Interesting alternative for sure, and certainly more raw. I like the lyrics on the final version better though but I like the alt verses in that demo version for sure. And breakingmad, completely forgot about I Ran Away. What a tune, not sure how it never made it on to Rush of Blood - outstanding tune that on another day definitely makes my top five.
