Is Soldier On one of the most underrated Oasis tracks?

There was certainly an interesting sound developing with DOYS. Shame they broke up straight afterwards as it would have been interesting to see where they went with it - I think Noel, Gem and Andy were really starting to work well together as musicians. Are Oasis the only band to ever fuck up their career twice? /s Noel was in a funkDisagree. Noel has been on a purple patch from DBTT to currently. In fact, you can make an argument that he has never lost it - SOTSOG has some of his better material, and HC had the tunes but Noel fucked up the track listing, once again. What messed Oasis up post-90s were Noel's poor track lists decisions, providing LAG with song contributions. If you look at solely Noel's songs (including b-sides and unreleased songs) from 2000 to 2018, you'll see that he actually never lost his songwriting capabilities. As far as DOYS goes, Noel fucked himself over by trying to teach Liam a lesson for fucking off to get married - the second half was never meant to be that way, and with the right decisions it would have been a belter of an album. Qu’est-ce que c’est now?

I still remember when I was getting into Oasis back in summer 2014 or so, this album felt like such a rarity and was the last one I listened to. Listening to this album in the right setting still brings back some good memories of staying up late and listening to Oasis albums and other music that really started off my music fandom.
Nostalgia aside, I enjoy DOYS, even with those terrible twosome in there. Muffins is at least rocking and the instrumental kicks ass, same with The Nature of Reality. The latter just needs better lyrics. That opening sequence of songs, from Bag it Up to To Be Where There's Life is just so good and strong, and had Come on Outside been put in High Horse Lady's place, those seven tracks would've read like a greatest hits of 2000s Oasis and it still does, as is, to some degree.

I fail to find many redeeming features from DOYS. Too many tracks feel like retreads of older songs and Liam sounds half arsed with his singing, Noel's songs feel half arsed and less said about Gem and Andy's songs the better.

Listening to this behemoth in full right now.
This album has grown spectacularly over the last decade. Top album, bar fucking TNOR.

Thank you for the reminder! It'd been ages since I'd listened to this record. I have it on heavy vinyl and I gave it a spin last night. It really has aged well, I agree. Arguably their best post-2000 album actually (although I have a soft spot for DBTT).
The first half of DOYS is great and has the confidence of the classic 90's Oasis albums. I always lament when it comes to the second half though. I love Falling Down - which I think is one of the best songs Noel has ever written for himself to sing, I also rate To Be Where's There's Life and Soldier On (which is a surprisingly solid album closer). For me, High Horse could've been a b-side (instead of the remixes), and been replaced with Come On Outside (I know they "ran out of time" to record it but really?) and the Nature of Reality could've been replaced with Record Machine. The Boy with the Blues is also a tune, but probably wouldn't have fit the groovy vibe that the band were going for at the time.
Overall, I think it's a top record. I can't believe it's been 10 years. I have fond memories of listening to it for the first time on the back patio with my Dad, having a beer at 11am. Those were the days.

10 years that I'm working, 10 years Dig Out Your Soul. I'm getting old! I remember I was half disappointed with that album at first. Went to see them in Vorst january 2009. Was alright but didn't really get into it. Then saw them again in july at Werchter. That was a brilliant gig, great atmosphere. A month later coming home from holiday in Italy I got all these txt messages from friends telling me Oasis had split up. The end of my student/school time and Oasis split up. Kind of symbolic to me

Shame they broke up straight afterwards as it would have been interesting to see where they went with it - I think Noel, Gem and Andy were really starting to work well together as musicians. Are Oasis the only band to ever fuck up their career twice? /s Bottom line, Noel was in a funk and LAG couldn’t fully cut the mustard. I don't think he was in a funk. Bar Shock of the Lightning, you can hear that he's trying to go in a different direction whereas LAG are trying (trying is the key word here) to write rock and roll songs which they were never really good at. Given Noel songs make up half the record, and sonically they have nothing to do with one another, and LAG's songs are already uneven from one another, a trend that kept going with Beady Eye, it results in a uneven album with some great songs on it. It showed how much the band wasn't a band and the gap between Noel and LAG was more and more obvious. In that respect, it's a good thing they broke up after. It's a shame Oasis doesn't exist anymore of course. But Noel's not the same guy who was in Oasis anyway. As a band they didn't write the same kind of songs and Noel's writing has always had something that they were never able to get, which is partly why Beady Eye failed IMO. But there are some songs on there that no one can argue with. Bag It Up, The Turning, Shock of the Lightning, I'm Outta Time and Falling Down. Those are the gems on the record. The rest could (and some should) have been b-sides.

For me it was somewhat of a return to what Oasis were about, and I love it. I skip too many tracks on that LP. - force of nature........skip - hung in a bad place...........skip - a quick peep....................................skip - probably all in my mind.........................................skip - better man.............................................................................skip That’s half the album I just completely disregard. Compared to DM, MG and BHN, I don’t really ever skip any of those tracks.

The only thing is that makes me sad about this is that this could've been amazing all the way trough. But it wasnt meant to be... alas Liam with his marriage, Noel fucking up the tracklist/song selection/Sardy being a yes man, just there for the check.

Its very easy to just blame Liam for the uneven effort that was DOYS. In reality it was a team effort by Liam and Noel. Did Liam use bad judgement to leave LA when mixing and doing vocals for DOYS to fly home and Marry Nicole? Yes. On the flip side it seems childish of Noel to just say oh yeah, well fuck you, I'm using two different, lesser tracks now (High Horse and Muffins). There was 6 months between Liam getting married and the release of DOYS. Surely they could find studio time for Liam to lay down the vocals to Come On Outside and Record Machine. I simply don't buy that there wasn't. I think I blame Noel more for what happened to DOYS. Not Liam or Sardy.

Wtf are you talking about? We’re discussing DOYS here.... Oh fuck, too many Peroni’s this afternoon!!! No matter what Oasis album you pick post 2000, it usually comes down to half the album is skip worthy. And that is sad to write. I like High Horse Lady. I know this is one of the tracks that Noel tacked on in the end and wasn't suppose to be on the album. But it adds to the atmosphere, and is a very good transition into Falling Down. Would I listen to GOYHHL on its own? Probably not. But as a collective album, it has its merits. I never skip it when I'm trying to go through the album in full. TBWTL isn't terrible. It needed guitars and to be done like how it's performed live, or how the Remixes handled it. Missed opportunity, but I can look past this one as well. Ain't Got Nothing is terribly lyrically about Liam's bust up in 2002 - why this is relevant 6 years later, I do not understand. On it's own, I like the mental guitar that continues throughout. At times this track irritates me, other times I can tolerate it. Still haven't figured out why Oasis continually had AGN and MOS in the same live set lists - redundant, and a waste of a tune, perplexing. The Nature of Reality is just plain shit. There's no getting around it. One of the worst studio released tracks Oasis have ever put out. Terrible. Soldier On only works because of how eerily it corresponds with the band's break up. And it carries the dark apocalyptic theme of DOYS proper. Again, like HHL, on its own it's pretty bland but collectively it works. If the band didn't split, Soldier On would lose its redeeming qualities. The problem with AGN-TNOR-SO is that they are completely sequential. Fuck that. Oasis are better than that. And this album should have been so much better. But DOYS is miles ahead of HC, and it has aged much, much better than DBTT. Like SOTSOG, it suffers from poor tracklist picks - which has always been the travesty of Oasis.

Bag It Up: AMAZING The Turning: AMAZING Waiting for the Rapture: AMAZING The Shock of the Lightning: AMAZING I'm Outta Time: GOOD High Horse Lady: GOOD - Works in context of album Falling Down: AMAZING To Be Where There's Life: PASSABLE - Remix/Live Versions Superior Ain't Got Nothing: HEH The Nature of Reality: SHIT! SHIT! SHIT! Soldier On: UNINSPIRING
As we all continue to say: Tracks 1-8 are MASSIVE.

Qu’est-ce que c’est now? Noel's been on a purple patch for the last THIRTEEN YEARS? Why has he written so few genuinely great songs post-90s, then? Nah, I don't buy that. I think Noel's writing stabilised from the mid-00s onwards, after a couple of rocky years at the start of that decade, but the only prolonged 'purple patch' he's had with his writing were those four or five years in the 90s when he wrote four albums' worth of amazing material pretty much all at once.

Some good singles, some good tunes and half decent albums. Same as it ever was. Same as it ever was.

Can I just say that To Be Where There’s Life is a load of old dog shite, written by the super unfashionable Les McQueen wannabe Gem once again with his ‘cool dad’ shtick. It’s so cringeworthy, attempting to replicate some raga style Indian music ala George Harrison (The Beatles? Well I never would have guessed it...). The thing is, George totally immersed himself in Hindu culture and Indian classical music, and that obsession comes through with authenticity in tracks like Within You Withou You and Love You To. Gem on the other hand was probably inspired merely by watching Apu from The Simpsons and fancied having a go at it. With typically disastrous results.

Yeesh, poor Gem lol I always though DOYS was an big improvement over the previous few albums. It's more cohesive and most of the songs are very good. The non-Noel songs just lack that extra spark. TBWTL and Soldier On have a good groove but they start to drag. Nature of reality is lacking lyrics but I enjoy the bluesy guitar riff. Outta Time is one of Liam's best songs, even though it's not the most original thing in the world. It's sweet and the piano is lovely. I've always enjoyed Ain't got nothing, Greedy Soul reminds me of it, except GS doesn't have the great bridge. Noel's songs on the album are great with Shock of lightening and Falling Down being fucking fantastic. FD is Noel's existential lyrics perfected I think. Also some great drums on this album
