I knew it would be Half The World Away. Even if the singer ends up doing it crap, at least its an Oasis song (b-side, no less) getting attention! Wonder if it'll make number 1? Doubtful but you never know! This will make the Oasis version drastically more popular.

It's not going to be amazing, it'll be saccharine MOR pap.
But I'd rather listen to Oasis saccharine MOR pap than any other saccharine MOR pap.
At least I'll know the words...

Well played Noel.

Haven't heard of her. I just hope it's not some usual whispering faux-emotive very slow piano / acoustic cover with not even remote hint of life or nuance of original tune. Swear those type of covers are like a plague in general cover versions these days and of last 10 years.

Noel's bank account is gonna love this Hopefully it'll fund another album. Might even boost CY sales as the "yoof" might hear it and investigate who originally wrote it.

I don't tend to like most of these cover versions. They're usually done by some whispery voiced woman who somehow manages to suck all the life out of the song, The Smiths cover from a few years ago being a prime example. That being said, Tom Odell did a good job with Real Love. Damn, just gave that Smiths cover a listen...that chick has no voice at all. Had me wondering if she was about to asphyxiate halfway through. HTWA is a somewhat weird choice, but seems to fit the spirit.

Noel's bank account is gonna love this As the man himself once said Edging ever closer to that elusive £87m, although the Man City board might be a little wealthy than that these days

I'll judge it when I hear it but never been a fan of Oasis cover versions, can't remember a good one. That said unless it is pissed up karaoke i'm not fan of most cover versions unless it is a totally different sound

Weird song choice really. Lyrics are a bit lonely and almost suicidal
when I leave this planet, you know I'd stay but I just can't stand it and I can feel the warning signs running around my mind And if I could leave this spirit, I'll find me a hole and I'll leave in it And I can feel the warning signs running around my mind

It will sadly go well with some marketeers idea of a lonely scene in the winter leading to a family reunion with (of course) massive amounts of presents under a tree, all accompanied by a bland and inoffensive sung version by the latest waif hoping for a big break.

I just realised all the official versions of the song are gone from youtube.....
or most anyway, the biggest viewed one is gone. you type in half the world away only brings it up the live versions.
Noels army has been out in full force again it seems.

It is that if I'm honest, I was just being my usual middle aged self over the whole 'advertising draining any humanity from all it touches' concept, as theyknowwhatimean noted I can be a dour bastard at the best of times

That will be Sony/ATV Music Publishing ensuring that the new version they will be getting higher earnings for greater viewing figures for comes up first on searches, rather than the original version.

As with previous years, all proceeds go to charity, so Noel won't make a penny.
Sadly - and this is just a theory - in return for John Lewis providing mass exposure of an Oasis song, Sony have been ordered to take all original versions of YouTube so when somebody types in 'Half The World Away' into YouTube, they are inundated with John Lewis versions, and thus John Lewis advertisement.
Tough corporate might. Pretty ugly.

If its all for charity and since it's for a christmas advert hence will only be on for next month anyhow. Even if the cover is crap no harm done. All good.
Bit different from hearing just for instance Blur's The Universal on those British Gas adverts. I actually even now think of that song solely as the "The British Gas Advert" music.

^ I used to watch The Royle Family before I got into Oasis, but I don't think of Half The World Away as "The the Royle Family song" for some reason.
