Clunker? Please. Are you taking the piss? Best song he's come up with since the '90s..... Yeah, the lyrics and melody are there but the recorded version is plodding and unlikeable. I at least almost never have the desire to listen to it.

My biggest annoyance with IIHAG is the middle 8 'aahs' were he's removed some of the notes since the original soundcheck.

Still, after two singles last time we already had one clunker (If I Had A Gun) Clunker? Please. Are you taking the piss? Best song he's come up with since the '90s..... Nonsense... it's not even the best song on the HFB album, and I don't even really like that album! Boring, saccharine shite, Alone On The Rope is ten times the tune If I Had A Gun is

Totally disagree. Certainly, IIHAG is lacking on the production side, but the song is fantastic. Still in my car playlists after more than 3 years ! (it also helps that my girlfriend loves it , I guess)

'If I Had A Gun' is a solid enough song, and was rightly single worthy, however the production and 'new musical construction' around it, really restrained its potential and strangled any emotion out of it. Despite what people say, this has carried over live too. It should have been kept as minimal as possible, like the soundcheck version we first heard. A good song, but definitely not the best since the 90's. Doubt it'd make my top 10 post 90's Noel Gallagher tracks. Top 20 though... more than likely.

If I Had A Gun is a great song. Nevermind the production or lack of creativity, or whatever you wanna call it. It has a great melody, and works even better as an acoustic song. It's what Noel does best.

The production or mixing just sucked the life out of IIHAG. Otherwise it's not a bad song. But this just makes it boring and tiring.

I mean BOTMI is a decent enough song with an interesting direction but it just lacks something. I can see what Noel was trying to do by releasing it as a single but I don't think it's that radio friendly and I don't think many people will become a fan because of it. It really does sound like a song from a film score at times. What a Life was much more radio friendly with a catchy hook whilst BOTMI is more subdued.

I think If I Had A Gun would be better received had we never heard that soundcheck version. It's so full of life and soul, so personal, and that's what is lacking in the album version. I like the album version, but it's no comparison to the passion displayed in that souncheck.

Do you know what I miss on the finished version of If I Had a Gun? The way he sings the verse that turned into "I'm holding on, I'm waiting for the moment to find me" on the soundcheck. The rhythm is different and it works so much better. I also prefer the aahs on the soundcheck and demo versions.

I think there is a great song in If I Had A Gun, it's just the execution was terrible in that it was bludgeoned to death on record. It completely lost the sensitive and haunting qualities of the sound check version that made it feel like something special.
Instead we got the album version that was like putting a ballet dancer in a straitjacket.

No way, the way that line turned out in the album version is so much better than the sound check. But I agree, the "aahs" are better and more diverse in the sound check. Overall, Noel should've taken the Wonderwall approach with it and focused more on the song rather than the beefy production.

Instead we got the album version that was like putting a ballet dancer in a straitjacket. Couldn't have said it better myself. The overall song is really good and I'd even consider it boarding on great. The chorus melody is one of Noel's best ever in my opinion. The recorded version of it is just really lacking. The rhythm is too plodding and the guitars are too beefed up. I prefer the Faster Than the Speed of Magic demo. Haunting should have been the word to describe IIHAG, instead I think of plodding. Even if it is somewhat of a Wonderwall rewrite, the song needed less focus on the instrumentation. The melody is outstanding. Noel and Sardy should have approached the song more subtly.

Hopefully Noel learned his lesson from If I Had A Gun and approached Dying of the Light more lightly. It can still have a strong production and everything but it doesn't need to be focused so much on heavy drums or bass because it doesn't need that.

Listen to this version of IIHAG and tell it's not fucking amazing. My favorite version. linkThe raw emotion is pretty obvious in this version, and I think that's why it's sooo good. Add some drums, a light bassline, light electric guitar overdub, and some harmonies, all with good production, and you have a brilliant track. I love it the way it is, no matter if it's the album version or live, though.
