Beady Eye seem to be catching a fair bit of flak for the quality of the lyrics.
I've never heard anybody moaning about "the sink is full of fishes."
Lyrics are just a way of carrying a melody. If you want it to read well, away and read up some poetry.
The songs are cracking - to hell with the lyrics.

I generally don't pay attention to lyrics, and don't care too much for them. I like if a song has great lyrics I can relate to, but it has to have a nice sound above all, or I won't be listening to it frequently.

I totally agree rebus, that's exactly what I said too but the melody on Second Bit Of The Apple just isn't appealing. I don't really give a hoot about lyrics. There are many other bands/artists in my collection if I want great lyrics but this time round even the melody wasn't up to par for me at least. Second Bite Of The Apple just isn't good enough.

Lyrics aren't the be-all and end-all, there's seems like far too much impetus on lyrics on this forum, which is surprising considering Noel Gallagher writes largely simplistic lyrics with little of no meaning to them. Bowie had a hit with Sound and Vision in the mid-seventies, a three minute song with a two minute intro and when the lyrics finally do come in, he sings "blue, blue electric blue, that's the colour of my room, where I will live, blue, blue...". People love the songs because they don't over think it and just let it take them somewhere... Can you imagine the uproar if Beady Eye's next single featured lyrics like that... I want You (She's So Heavy) anyone?... Lyrics aren't as important as everyone makes out completely agree with what you've said rebus

I believe lyrics are important, but they're not the only thing. And when someone brought up the fact that SBOTA's lyrics may have some biblical resemblance to them, especially Adam and Eve, I liked the song even more than before. I honestly don't see why people are complaining about Beady Eye's lyrics; you know what you're getting into, these are former members of the band Oasis, who produced songs like I Can See a Liar, Digsy's Dinner, etc.
I also believe we are by far the whiniest, most critical fan base of any band

We always had opinions about the new stuff but as I said many times the new class does love to go on about the production and beats and anything else Not a knock just a fact , the overanalyzation was not nearly this prevelant years ago , don't say it's better or worse ( think you know my view). But it's a fact. Maybe the other bands new generation is the same. As long as they are HAVIN fun Cool by me

What Beady Eye havent got, Noel has . . . . . . . and that's the ability to come up with melodies!
Some of Noels lyrics are aweful when you sit down and read them, but his melodies are the hook.
Take Me Away and Some Might Say are prime examples.

Lyrics matter, and if they don't then why do they exist? Nobody said they didn't matter, just that too many people focus on them over, perhaps more important features of a song

I remember watching an interview with Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden, and he said he didn't really care about the lyrics to a song, more about the melody. I think lyrics are often important, but not any more important than other essential parts of a song, like the melody, instruments, chorus, hook, etc. When I hear a song, the first thing that catches my ear is the melody. The lyrics usually come later. When the lyrics are meaningful, it makes me enjoy the song even more.
And yeah, quite a few Oasis songs are nonsensical or very simple (as Noel and Liam have also said) if we just read the lyrics straight off the page. It doesn't make them any less good, because it's the entire tune that counts.

Songs can mean more to me when I identify with the lyrics but a song with a great melody that makes you want to move can be just as good with poor lyrics. I really like SBOTA because it sounds happy and energetic and makes me want to dance and sing along. The lyrics aren't the greatest but they aren't bad either. The melody is great, Liam sounds great with horns, and Chris's drumming is amazing.
I don't think the general public cares much about lyrics, looking at what's played on the radio and what's played in clubs. Even in the 60s I think a lot of pop songs were popular more for the melody and danceability than for genius lyrics. And today especially with club music, the beat is more important than anything. Not to mention the beat is now the same for nearly every song that gets played. I bet if people sat down hung over the day after clubbing and read the lyrics of the songs they were enjoying, they'd be shocked at how shitty most lyrics are in popular music these days. Some make Little James look like Shakespeare.

I do care for the lyrics. If melody is the brain for a song, lyrics must be the heart for a song.

I want You (She's So Heavy) anyone? A song famously about Lennon's battle with heroin addiction. I can think of numerous meaningless Beatles lyrics and that isn't one of them, I'm afraid.

I genuinely care a hell of a lot about lyrics when it comes to music I listen too. You won't find a bigger Dylan fan than me that doesn't mean I either expect or actually want the same quality of lyrics from other artists/bands. Do I expect everyone to write lyrics like Dylan? No, he's a genius. It's not even the idea of expecting Beady Eye to all of a sudden write amazing lyrics. I don't think anyone is asking them to do that. However, it's not unreasonable to expect something decent. Lyrics are purely effort based. Because it's actually a craft. The more time you put into editing lyrics, the better they will come out. I know plenty of musicians who can't write lyrics, they seriously can't. Yet they put hours of time and effort into doing them and re-doing them and asking themselves for every single line: "Is this truly the best I can do?". And if they believe it is, they move on. If not, they keep going. So when I see lyrics like SBOTA, I just assume someone didn't put the time in to edit. Lyrics don't have to be complicated, they can be very simple. They don't even have to make sense. But there has to be some effort. Dylan's basically a natural lyrical genius, yet when he wrote the lyrics to Like A Rolling Stone he wrote over seven pages of lyrics until he felt he had enough to pick out the best lines to choose from. That's a ton of effort......from a genius. What's even more frustrating is that the lyrics to FOTF aren't half bad, they're actually fairly good. I'm Outta Time, Turn Up the Sun, The World Outside My Room, Four Letter Word all have good lyrics. So they're capable of writing better. Yet I see something like SBOTA and wonder how much time did they really put into that? Especially considering there are three songwriters among them. Isn't Beady Eye supposed to be more collaborative based. Yet no one over two years thought to take a few more hours editing some lyrics? In the end, for better or for worse, lyrics are part of the song. And I don't think I've ever seen a case where bettering lyrics has made a song worse. I really don't think asking for better lyrics is in anyways unfair asking for too much. That's just how I feel. The rest is just taste in the end.

Beady Eye seem to be catching a fair bit of flak for the quality of the lyrics. I've never heard anybody moaning about "the sink is full of fishes."I can take a few clunkers if the overall lyrics to a song are good. And overall, Some Might Say great lyrics. There's one clunker lyrics in FOTF that always irks me, "Universal gleam". Yet, for the most part those lyrics are fairly good. So I'm not going to condemn it for one bad like. SBOTA however has a few appalling lines.

If you want it to read well, away and read up some poetry. The songs are cracking - to hell with the lyrics. I think that some lyrics may sound nonsense, but they produce some fantastic or unusual imagery (eg the sink full of fishes) that make the song special. In my opinion, a great song can produce multiple interpretations and/or evoke strong emotions, with meaningful lyrics. Also, as an avid reader of poetry and a giant music fan, I think that songs are poems, set to music. At least the good ones are So in that sense, I do think lyrics are an important component.
