I don't get all the hate the lyrics are getting. The song clearly does have an overall meaning, it's not just random gibberish rhyming for the sake of it.

Beady Eye seem to be catching a fair bit of flak for the quality of the lyrics. I've never heard anybody moaning about "the sink is full of fishes." Lyrics are just a way of carrying a melody. If you want it to read well, away and read up some poetry. The songs are cracking - to hell with the lyrics. Do you suffer from retardation?

I believe that in music, usually the lyrics are only of additional value. It's almost always ultimately the melody, the instrumentation, and the production that can take a song to whichever level it would belong to. Sure, good lyrics can definitely contribute significantly to the quality of the song, but lyricists who have the ability to do so were, are, and will be very, very rare. And we can easily see how there are a considerable number of songs with crappy lyrics that still manage to garner critical acclaim as well as mainstream success.
SBOTA's lyrics can't be labelled as good but I don't think it's that terrible at all, especially when it can be plausibly interpretated as a reference to Adam and Eve that was mentioned on that other thread.

Don't get me wrong - lyrics CAN be brilliant and sometimes they can make a good song brilliant (in the case of a band like The Divine Comedy, whom I adore), but if people are listening to somebody like Liam Gallagher, who is clearly not the most articulate or intelligent fella around, then you're barking up the wrong tree.
Not knocking Liam or Beady Eye. I adore the songs. But they're not lyricists. They're musicians.

I've wondered for years what they definition of a "musician" really is? I mean, just b/c you are part of the music industry does that make you a musician? If that is the sole criteria then I think "musician" might well be the most overrated profession on the planet. Don't get me wrong, I am not hating on Liam or BE.....just asking the question.

You bet your bottom dollar, my friend. Liam played the tambourine, therefore he is a musician

That's a fairly loose definition. There is a difference between a guitarist and a musician. You become a musician when it becomes a profession. That is, when you perform and write music with that instrument.

You know there's alot of joking and serious shit on this thread about lyrics ... I think it comes down to the band and the mood your in much like I thought that in best lp ever
Like if I am reflective and want to HEAR THOUGHTS I will put on Dylan , early Springsteen , even some , Harry Chapin .... Not motley Crüe , van Halen, def leopard. Ya know ?
Styles make fights. Moods make what I listen to so I really don't give a rats ass if I am at a bar and motley Crüe or vh don't lyrically inspire me but the drums a guitar got my blood flowing . Just like I don't need drums and guitar when I am introspective and want to be spoken to that's when I listen to Dylan or Bruce .
Just think its all to do about nothing .... Style makes fights .... Moods makes whether lyrics matter or not If @waitingforsally is enjoying van Halen I'm not gonna stop her from dancing and say hey do you know what Eddie is wailing that guitar to ? Nope

Nope To be fair, even Def Leopard and Van Halen have really good lyrical moments. Lyrics don't have to be thought provoking to be good.

I don't get all the hate the lyrics are getting. The song clearly does have an overall meaning, it's not just random gibberish rhyming for the sake of it. Some of those lines is just rhyming for the sake of the easy rhyme. Just because something has "meaning" doesn't mean it's good. Technically there's no such thing as a set of lyrics that are completely devoid of meaning.

I've been only loosely following this thread so apologies if I'm missing anything, but in answer to the title question.
the lyrics don't make or break a song for me. if it's a good song that gets my head bobbing, but has dumb lyrics, I don't really care what they're saying and will just continue bobbing along to the rhythm lol.
if the lyrics are pure poetry but the music is lousy or I don't like the singer's voice, I'm not going to listen either way.
that said there are times when music, lyrics, voice, instruments combine into a song that I LOVE, and great lyrics can make a good beat or slow ballad something really special. the tune itself can break a song for me, the singer's voice can break it, but I can't think of any instance where lyrics truly 'break' a song for me. so while lyrics - clever and witty, or thought-provoking and emotional - can be a brilliant addition to a song, it's not always a must for good listening.
