More superb stuff from the band who, I truly believe, are the best on the planet right now.
Never Before, what a way to open an album.
Round and Around - One of the best songs they've written.
Annoyed that the Brixton gig mp3s aren't split though....

Love the new album! Yeah, it's poppier but - imho - pop is a genre not something less valuable of rock.
The melodies are there and Tommy vocals are top as usual.

Listened to the album 4-5 times through now so feel like I've let it digest a bit. Never Before - 8.5/10 - One of the best on the album, absolutely love that swagger and attitude it has, very Roses and similar to For Now which is one of their best tunes in my opinion. Do feel like the chorus could have gone somewhere else though to take it up another notch, that's what I meant in my previous post about the melodies. The Glow - 7/10 - Nice little tune, good single choice. Silver - 10/10 - One of the best songs I've ever heard in all honesty and still the best song on the album, magical. Life Is A Game Of Changing - 8/10 - This one has grown on me a lot. Wasn't sure to start but think it's one of the strongest tunes on the album now. Criminals - 7.5/10 - Actually really like this one now. It's pure cheesy pop but it's so fucking catchy. Good fun. Strangers - 7/10 - Quite like it but think it's one of the weaker tunes on the album, hasn't really stuck with me. Learning Alive - 7.5/10 - Lovely melody and Tommy sounds brilliant, think it could have been longer though, feels rushed almost. Hello Girlfriend - 7.5/10 - I avoided listening to this properly until now, been getting rave reviews from the live versions they did. I think it's good but not as good as it's been hyped up to be. Appointment - 7/10 - This seems to be a lot of peoples favourite but it hasn't clicked with me really yet but still solid, can see this one growing on me with more listens. Round & Around - 8.5/10 - Absolutely love it, could see Liam singing this tune actually, would love to hear it. In my top 3 on the album for sure. Cobracaine - 7.5/10 - Think this one will be a hell of a song live, very different to what you'd expect from a DMA's song but they pull it off. Good album closer and again, will probably grow on me in the coming weeks. -------------------- What does that average out at then? Need igotflair to do the math for me? I'll give it an 8.5/10. Best album of the year for me and I think the best band around at the moment, great third album.

^^^ 😊 Rolo Your ratings work out at an overall 7.8 for the album as a whole. If you rate it at 8.5 you need to find another 7.5 across all tracks from somewhere; I think you’ll struggle to do this.

Good work, did you enjoy that? Definitely deserves more than a 7.8 though, lets round it up to an 8 and call it a day.

Nice review Rolo.
Agree mostly - I love Never Before, think it works so well.
I've loved Criminals from the first time I heard it, but get not a lot of people did. I also really like Strangers and Hello Girlfriend is great. Not sold fully on Appointment – but it works in the flow of the album.
Round And Around is excellent, and Cobracaine really finishes it off well.
I genuinely can't think of one 'weak' song on the album - which again, they've done with all of their records. Silver is probably my favourite but Never Before is pushing it as a close second.
Learning Alive is probably my least favourite - not because it's a bad song, but because it just feels too short.

Just love the album. I'm so happy for them, that they're going the way they want to and - imo - smashing it.

I like all the singles a lot more in the context of the album for sure. Off the bat I think this will probably be my least favourite of the three albums but it's more poppy and I think it will take them to the next level to the point where they are the household names in Australia that they should be. The fact they are not really seen as headline material at festivals is mental to me and hopefully now they sort of have that feel about them. They've been featured on a few things on mainstream television recently so hopefully this is a sign of things to come.
Will do a review as well later on in the week but still letting it settle.

Tried really hard to get into this band. Love Silver, loved Delete but I am just not a fan.
He's got a lovely voice, but I just don't get it. Listened to the album a few times now and it doesn't do anything for me. What am I missing?

Never Before - 8 First impression was Happy Mondays meet Pet Shop Boys. A good tune but if I want 90s style stuff there’s new bands out there doing it much better. I appreciate a great song when I hear one though, even though it’s not for me, so it deserves the 8. The Glow - 10 My rating is based on the isolation acoustic versions. Again, it’s down to taste but those are the versions I prefer all day long. www.instagram.com/tv/CBP3juDHmO6/?igshid=drtxc0le0hj www.instagram.com/tv/B_uD8LiH4wu/?igshid=18abjollgbt9g Silver - 10 Still playing this at least once a day and have to be held back from pressing repeat. Life Is A Game Of Changing - 8 It’d be a 7 but have to take what bt95 says into account about hearing it live, so upped it in anticipation of hearing it played when I see them. Criminals - 9 Instantly loved it, it’d be a 10 but I’ve knocked off .5 for the bubbly synth parts and another .5 for the word “partner” being a major part of the lyrics. Always hated that term, it’s one used for kids in school or for politically correct bs. As soon as I heard it I thought nooooooo you’ve fucked up there. Again, just my thoughts, so many other beautiful words to describe the relationship he’s trying to portray. Strangers - 6 Even though I’ve played the album right through each time, I’ve forgotten how this one goes. Clearly didn’t make an impression on me. I’ll give this one some time. Learning Alive - 10 Everything I’m looking for. Perfection. Does things to me. Finished too soon but I can’t knock him down for that. Hello Girlfriend - 10 Based on the live version, this one has me dancin’. The acappella part showcases Tommy’s vocal on a pop tune which is pretty rare. Probably my favourite on the album right now and I can’t see that changing. Was bouncing at this gig: Appointment - 9 Didn’t fall for it at first, lyrics on first listen didn’t do anything for me but after a few spins I’m having it. Round & Around - 7 I think it’s a good tune but would be better a bit heavier. Cobracaine - 7 Didn’t love it, didn’t hate it. Mediocre and pretty forgettable, I need more time for this one too. Buzzing to see them another couple of times in October if the world sorts it’s shit out.

Their best album. The Glow, Hello Girlfriend, Silver are in my current playlist. But they are not gonna be the next Tame Impala methinks (in terms of popularity), something’s lacking

igotflairI get where you're coming from about the 'partner' bit in Criminals, though actually I took it as a dual meaning. They're singing 'partner' because it's about going up against the 'criminals'. I know it's very, very poppy, but I think that's the context it's in - or at least, that's the way I took it. It's probably not that deep but it's just what my mind went to at first (yeah, a partner - criminals etc). I actually really, really like the tune. Don't care at all that it's poppy. The album flows so well too. And definitely agree with Rolo's shout re. Strangers having that bit of NGHFB to it. Overall though, I think - while the influences are certainly there - this album doesn't really sound much like anything other than a DMA's album. They've owned it. Just hope we get to see them played live soon enough!

The "the less I give, the more that I tend to take/break" line in Strangers is excellent.

Just hope we get to see them played live soon enough! This is why I love them, they really are distinctive. When I first heard about them I looked them up, read about their various influences and thought nah I don’t need this in my life. I saw a few pics and thought that aesthetically they weren’t my thing either. I didn’t pay them any attention at Finsbury. But I’m pleased I was encouraged to persevere. I love their writing and the only ones I skip are their Believe and Beautiful Stranger covers.

Still bedding in but I've listened to it a few times now and these are my thoughts.
Never Before - 8.5 Fucking love this and did straight away. The slow bruising Primal Scream influenced verses breaking into Tommy's voice in the chorus is a joy to behold.
The Glow - 8 When it was a single I didn't really fancy it, but am loving it now. Lyrics are great and the melody is very catchy.
Silver - 10 Vintage DMA's, in my opinion the best song they've done. Shows why they are the best, and deserve to be the biggest, band in the world right now.
Life is a Game of Changing - 7 Didn't like it as a single, but have warmed to it as part of the album. Although, the high pitch drum thing that sounds like something hitting a pole really bugs me.
Criminals - 8 Yet again, as a single didn't enjoy it and was worried that it would be a sign of a very poppy album that is trying too hard to be mainstream. But after listening to it a bit more there is a lot more to it than that. The melody on the 'tell me do you need a partner' line is unreal and so catchy, not sure about that little bit after that though with the synths. Stops it being rated higher.
Strangers - 9 What a belter, this really came out of nowhere and after a few listens I realised how much I love it. Has great imagery and just makes me think of an intense, brooding figure in an overcoat roaming through the streets in an overcoat pondering on his thoughts.
Learning Alive - 8 The start of it bugs me but when it gets to the 'I just want to be here...' bit it just feels so epic. Think it will be great live.
Hello Girlfriend - 7 Weird that this is one of the more rocky 'DMA's' style songs on the album but I don't like it as much. Think the chorus sounds a bit clunky and the word 'girlfriend' is always a bit of an awkward one to fit into a song.
Appointment - 8 A lot of my mates have been fucking raving about this song but while I like it, don't think I've felt it's full potential yet. Needs a few more listens - really like the 'note to self pull over' lyric.
Round & Around - 8.5 So catchy, have found my self singing along in the kitchen quite a bit. Another one that will sound brilliant live.
Cobracaine - 6.5 Bit of a poor way to end the album I think, in fact the tracklisting is one area this album could improve. Pretty sad song and while it's not bad I just don't rate the effects on Tommy's voice. He's got the best voice in rock n' roll right now you don't need to plaster it with autotune. Might grow on me over time though.
Think that it works out to an average of 8.04 - Great album and I just hope it gets them where they deserve to be!

Looks like it could head to number 3 in the UK album charts.
Not bad at all. Obviously 2 or 1 would be unreal but if it gets top three that's a great platform to build from.

Can't stop listening... my rank so far. Silver Learning Alive Hello Girlfriend Cobracaine Appointment The Glow Criminals Life Is a Game of Changing Never Before Strangers Round & Around Yeah I've listened in full at least twice every day so far - trying to stop that as I don't wanna burn it out, but the variety in it is just brilliant - and I'm struggling to rank the songs because of that really. Such a great album and getting the promotion and attention it deserves. A top three UK album for some lads from Sydney - who are in no way as big as something like Tame Impala etc - isn't bad going.
