Exactly this. Body Paint is the very definition of style over substance. The new album reminds me of Humbug, although The Car makes Humbug look like an all time classic. Mirrorball is a real gem and possibly my favourite song of theirs since Cornerstone, but the rest of the songs are just pretty unmemorable. Mr Schwarz is the only other song that I would actually chose to put on. I much prefer Tranquility Base Hotel, that album has at least 5 or 6 songs that I genuinely like.

I was thinking about who they are now? What is their identity? With who we can compare them? That rock and roll, eh? Well, there is no more rock and roll. They have guitarist that doesn't know how to play so they have other guitarists in the back to play his parts and he is on stage because he is good looking. If you don't how to play very well, you can compensate that with your energy in rock and roll music but they are now pretending to be something else. Alex is whispering, that is not singing. He can't write and he can't sing the songs he is trying to make these days. What is that The Car song? I can listen Simon & Garfunkel's songs like that, his singing and playing and composing is not even near their level. Whole album and who they are now is just bunch of pretending. Substance, soul, quality = zero. But they look good and their videos and production is some fancy schmancy artsy fartsy shit. Are they fun, exciting? Are they rock 'n'roll, eh? No. And that is fine. But did they instead of that became artists that have real artistic value? No. So who are they? New Pink Floyd, McCartney, Simon & Garfunkel, Bowie...? Well, no. They are fucking Duran Duran now.

Struggled through it yesterday thinking that the best moments are the ones without the pretentionus vocals. Great arrangements.

People are still overthinking the whole thing. And it's funny, because I've been around long enough to remember how people felt when they released Humbug, some websites even claimed that the then leaked album might be fake.
Then AM was again divisive, some people (me included) felt at the time that it didn't sound like Arctic Monkeys at all. Then TBH&C was a shock to most fans and here we are again with The Car.
Yes, they have changed. Yes, the new album is slower. You don't like it? Well, the good thing with Arctic Monkeys is that they're quite unpredictable, maybe the next album will be rockier, but this is such a great moment for all of us who are actually enjoying The Car.

Well, the good thing with Arctic Monkeys is that they're quite unpredictable, maybe the next album will be rockier, but this is such a great moment for all of us who are actually enjoying The Car. Yeah, but you just proved me right. See what are you talking about - divisive, shock, change, slower, unpredictable... It is all about their style. Yes, they did it, they changed and created new style. What about substance? I took my guitar and started playing and singing Body Paint and I was excited, the idea is there, style is there, it supposed to be good but there is just something missing. After that I played few tracks from Revolver and it is levels above. Beatles just had it, Monkeys with this record just don't. Plus, it is not just me, my girlfriend, who doesn't know much about Monkeys and Beatles, liked Beatles songs and thought that the first one (Body Paint) was just missing something. Yes, I am comparing them them with Beatles but they want to be big boys now and not fun, indie band, so why fucking not? Plus I am singing much better than Alex on the record and I made Body Paint even better than it is 😁😁😁😁 Ok, they have new sound but how good they are in that style? When they were making indie rock or modern alternative rock, they were on of the best bands in those styles and had one of the best albums ever in that genre. Where would you ranked them now with this album comparing them with other artist who have similar style? I wouldn't very high. You can go to page 25 of this thread for example and see that I was defending them and I was happy with Mirrorball, new style, album cover... but all that doesn't change the thing that quality just isn't there. The Car, Big Ideas, Mr Schwartz... those are all b sides and they are slow ballads and you really want to tell me that they are great ballads? I wouldn't have anything against those songs and that style if those were better songs.

What about substance? I took my guitar and started playing and singing Body Paint and I was excited, the idea is there, style is there, it supposed to be good but there is just something missing. Well you can't really talk about substance in an objective way. For you there isn't any, but for me it clearly is. Body Paint is (in my opinion) the best thing they've released since Humbug. There's melody, some delicate verses broken in the middle of the song with a change in style and then a big loud ending. But you know, I understand what you're saying because the same you're descibing is how I feel about TBH&C, the songs just aren't there. But my point is, the same way that I was disappointed with that album and loved the next one it could happen to you. Even if the band has changed I'm sure it will change again, because it's the only constant in AM history. Ok, they have new sound but how good they are in that style? When they were making indie rock or modern alternative rock, they were on of the best bands in those styles and had one of the best albums ever in that genre. Where would you ranked them now with this album comparing them with other artist who have similar style? I wouldn't very high. See, the exciting part about this is that no one is doing what they're doing. For better or worse. You're right, when doing indie rock albums they're one of the best, you know it, I know it and they know it, so it must be a bit boring after a while. Why not trying something new? In my opinion they're doing a very good job in that style. They're not Bowie, but who is? He's Alex Turner and he's doing quite good.

Mirrorball/Body Paint best since Humbug? really?
Maybe if we ignore the fact 'Do I Wanna Know' and 'R U Mine' exist, but even then I'd still disagree.
Body Paint clearly the better of the 2 tracks though. I much prefer Big Ideas over Mirrorball.

I actually feel sorry for anyone who doesn't like this album, it's incredible. I'm actually struggling to listen to other music at the moment because I'm loving the vibe of it so much and just not enjoying anything else to this extent. At first I was positive and luke warm but every few days another song hits me like a bolt of lightning and becomes my new favourite. In the couple weeks since its come out I think all of Mirrorball, Ain't Quite, Sculptures, Body Paint, Big Ideas & Hello You have been my favourite. They've been playing Scultpures as a set starter which is awesome, can't wait for Hello You live. That outro is awesome, reminds me of Last Shadow Puppets too and there's something about the 'could pass for 17 if I just get a shave and catch some zzz's' line that just hits right. They're the best band this century by a mile and honestly I am not sure if we've seen a band this good and especially this versatile for a long long time.

It happens with every AM release, people are split on it at the beginning then a few months later then it's great lol. You could name a few artists that has happened too who just don't play it safe. Definitely agree they are one of the best bands of the last 22 years for me.

Haha pretty spot on. Applies 100% to AM which to me is their worst record. Applies to the Black Keys too, or lately, Weezer. Two bands that fell into generic songwriting.
