For those doubting Mike Rowe's ability to riff off Noel and be playing this song for the first time - yer wrong.
It's a four chord progression all the way through the song. It's in the same key they had been recording in, so easy for Mike to quickly get into the groove and play along. I managed to figure out the chords on first listen to the brief clip we got and I'm, at best, a competent guitar player. All it takes is a good ear.
What IS impressive is what Mike did with it. The subtlety of the playing and the gentle right hand melodies he adds give this song so much more than just the guitar would have. Noel's a tube for wanting him to stop playing along.
Hats off to Mike.

I am in the minority. Nice song. It's better than dying of the light which I don't like but to me the album proper is much more exciting and interesting.

This song is by far the best song on the album.

Hats off to Mike. Agree with everything you said, but curious on the bolded part. What's this mean? Did Noel want him not not play along?

It's f#cked up if you ask me. I went to the record shop today and it is indeed included on the standard edition for €13. A "special edition" had no extra track, just a booklet and a more sturdy package going for €17. WTF? The fool I am baught the special edition of course. When i was in the shop yesterday the special editions had the Holy Mountain single in them also. Are you sure that's not in yours? Would account for that 4 euro difference. It was the same for me, paying some extra for a sturdy package. No single inside, just the booklet and the album on CD. I checked the catalog number and ccording to Discogs that's how it should be, just 1 CD: www.discogs.com/Noel-Gallaghers-High-Flying-Birds-Who-Built-The-Moon/release/11189095

I had assumed that was the reason for price difference.

Aye, there's an interview on Radio X (I think) where Noel says the whole way through the song he was wishing in his head that Mike would stop playing along. Although apparently that's something Mike does all the time. Noel also mentioned in that interview it had to be on the album because he wants to play it live. Happy days.

My understanding is it was a special moment for Noel to listen to himself over the headphones which he said sounded amazing, all he meant is he didn't want to hear Mike's jamming. From their sound I'm almost certain the keyboards were re-recorded which fits with the rumour he recorded them on the tour bus.

Sitting at a bar and all that's going through my head is:

But I will not rest while love lies dead in the water. Dead in the water. In the water... Dead in the water.
I'm massively enjoying the new record and all its nuances but this song is classic Noel at his best. Pure emotion.

I'm so glad they didn't feel the need to make a studio version of this. The simple acoustic arrangement fits the song like a GLOVE.

This cover made me realize that with proper production it can make a great pop song.

This cover made me realize that with proper production it can make a great pop song. Yeah, same. It is kinda insane that this song is not being properly recorded, nevermind being a single, but you know, we've been there before. Plus, i've always seen this kind of attitude as a little wave to the real fans. It's like- hey, this could have been the big single with an epic video and shit, but you know what ? This one is a special for you. Cool, if you ask me.

I think he should have recorded it as the finale for the album. So what if he'd written it before. I honestly don't think it would have been that out of place because the album's sound is so eclectic. It would be a powerful way to close up shop, something classically Noel. Wed pt II leaves me hanging a bit.

Noel said in the Radio X interview that he wrote DITW just sitting at home on the couch watching tv one day. If that's true, there must be at least a few amazing acoustic songs that have never seen the light of day...what I wouldn't give to be a fly on the wall during his writing process

The cool thing is, if Noel decides to...he CAN officially produce this song. Judging by fan reaction, there's good incentive to.

Imagine what Dave Sardy would have done to this song
''Let's put drums on there...''

I think it would be worth a studio recording eventually. He should give this song to Taylor Swift. I'm not joking. It could be a worldwide hit with proper treatment.
