Don't get me wrong, I like it enough. 7/10, solid for what it is and for what it does.
But why a single? It's not going to get any spins on the radio. It's not going to appeal to the masses.
Is Noel purposefully trying to be unconventional with everything in this album cycle?
This is what I would do, and what I think Noel should have done:
1. Fort Knox used as a teaser 2. Followed by Holy Mountain as Single #1 3. And Beautiful World as Single #2
I just don't understand why Fort Knox is a single....?

It technically still isn't a single or have I got it wrong?

It's not a single.

It's a single in any real sense, but I think it's clear that it's not meant to be a played-on-the-radio promoted-everywhere single. It's just a taste of the album that he's made available, probably due to the mixed reception of Holy Mountain. Similar to Chinatown but that was a poor choice IMO because it wasn't an instrumental, so it wasn't clear how much of a "single" it was meant to be and it slowed momentum down rather than speed it up.

Technically it's not a single, but let's face it. It's totally a single. Sorry Noel, that's your 2nd single, welcome to 2017.

I don't call it a single since it's not available to purchase in traditional formats. It's just freebie/teaser.

This is undoubtedly the most psychedelic song Noel's ever released. Forget Who Feels Love and the Falling Down AA remix, this is an out-of-body experience.

This song is just mostly junk. Has it’s moments but a huge meh. More Dad-rock than anything he’s ever done, really. I listen to lots of great psychedelic loopy edm sonic bands. Good ones. Noel doesn’t need to play in that sandbox, or, if he does, he had better do it way better than that.

I still think something is missing at the 45 second mark.

I still think something is missing at the 45 second mark. It seems like originally there were actual lyrics and they were dropped later. There could be a vocal take that matches up at the 45 second mark.

It's like when Dad goes out and tries to buy a hip outfit or some slick shoes but he can't really pull it off and it's kinda like... huh? Just highlights his mid-life crisis here.

There could be a vocal take that matches up at the 45 second mark. It seems like the song is building to a moment at that exact point but nothing really happens but more muffled drums. Maybe I'm too use to the teaser and Noel's vocals coming in after that drum fill. Its a minor observation but it feels like something is gone.

Anybody think that girl singing is saying 'beautiful'? I hear it every time.
Also, I'd be very interested in hearing the alternate (vocal) versions of Fort Knox.

People use the term "dad rock" to describe painfully forced attempts to recreate youthful energies that sound absolutely lifeless. Hurricane #1 is a great example. You may think that Fort Knox is Noel's failed attempt at being hip, but that isn't dad rock.

This has overtook Ballad of the Mighty I to become my favourite High Flying Birds track. Love, love, love it.
Starting to get used to Holy Mountain after it too, but I have to say the mixing on the first set of verses after the madness of Fort Knox makes it seem a little flat. As soon as the flutes kick in, the carnival is back, though.
EDIT: Dad-rock?! Are you fucking mental??

I dispute your definition of dad rock lol but then let’s just say Fort Knox is your ‘goofy slick youthful-wannabe 55 yo single uncle’ rock.

I would think of Lock All The Doors if I follow the das rock definition.

I’m not saying it sounds like Weller, I’m saying the spirit of songs like this are cheeseball attempts to look fresh and dabble in uber-coolness. Like your Dad in a new pair of this season’s H&M slim fit jeans. Dad rock for me. PS - I loved Holy Mountain.

This is my favourite Twitter comment about Fort Knox. Homer's webpage caught most of the elements of the track. Looking forward to the album

I still think Taylor Swift is missing at the 45 second mark. Imagine if Taylor Swift burst into the track at 45 seconds. It would be more biblcal than the Bible, man.
