The average rating so far is 5.7, considering this is an Oasis forum and likely to suffer from significant inflation I think that is pretty telling. In my opinion this is one of his least inspired and least interesting offerings ever released as a single by Noel, especially as a lead single.
It's lyrics are bland, repetitive, with no emotional resonance. His vocals are shouty and flat and drowned by the general din of the rest of the mix. Musically there's nothing that stands out because everything is loud. He tries to hide it behind a manic tempo and lots of fuzz but it doesn't do the song any favours.
It's not like The Death of You and Me, which had relatively clever lyrics and an unusual composition for a Noel song. This one isn't going to grow on me, it's like all the worst parts of Dream On distilled, sped up and the volume cranked to 11.
I gave it a 4/10, which after 5-6 listens is still my view. It's the worst non-B side song released by Noel since he went solo.

Chord progression does not equal song style. It's completely different from just about anything he has done. This. Noel isn't making up chords. And honestly, take Radiohead. Most of their songs actually rely on fairly simple chords. but on the flipside production does not equal different song style its intro verse chorus verse chorus middle 8 solo chorus its different in the sense that its a new song |

In my opinion, this is the worst song Noel has ever written. I've listened several times and it makes me cringe more on each listen. And further, I think it's an absolute embarrassment to his songwriting genius.

And I am afraid this will happen again when the full album is released. |

Update: Average = 6.31065089 >= 6 = 57.7% <= 5 = 42.3% Not much improvement over your 5.7 number. But still an improvement. That said, we could get always discuss why a rating system would ever have a ZERO option. |

Personally, it's still around an 8 for me. I love that rip-roaring opening, the groove in the verses, and everything in the chorus sections is just delicious. The melody, the flutes, the whoo-oh-oooohs, the brass, everything. A proper feel-good pop song.

I love that rip-roaring opening, the groove in the verses, and everything in the chorus sections is just delicious. The melody, the flutes, the whoo-oh-oooohs, the brass, everything. A proper feel-good pop song. I can't undestand people who gave this song/AYW 0 and I can't understand people who give this song/AYW 10. DM is ten out of ten for me! AYW and HM is 6.5 or 7/10 for me. Yes this song is better than Meaning of Soul or FoN but for me it can't be better than most of the Oasis classics. Yes AYW tracks are better than most of the BE tracks but Oasis songs are still untouchable. |

Furthermore -- for him to mention this dross in the same breath as anything he wrote in the 90s is blasphemous -- much less saying it would've been massive in that time period. That era produced generation-defining bands with amazing music from all over the globe; comparing Holy Mountain to any of his 90s classics is a goddamn disgrace and makes me wonder if he's lost the plot completely. Now, before I get badgered, I don't want Noel to continue releasing IIHAG and TDOTL because he can write those in his sleep. I'm all for experimenting and going a different direction (still dying to hear the Amorphous Androgynous material), but I'm going to be thoroughly disappointed if that direction is a continuation of this single. 6/10. I was very excited when I listened to the 90-second preview yesterday, but to be fair I was also inebriated. Now that I listen to it sober it's become a bit meh. Noel Gallagher's music and alcohol go well together, I guess  It's pretty fucking ridiculous, because I can't shake off the feeling that it sounds like NGHFB meets BDI  OK let me rephrase that - it's not meh. I kinda like it, to be fair. But it's still nothing more than a 6. |

I have been a huge Oasis and Noel fan since 94 when I saw the at Hammer Jacks in Baltimore. Have seen Oasis 23 times and Noel twice. Have been waiting forever for Noel to get his new alblum out and there are very few songs I dislike by Noel. With that being said, I agree with others that Holy Mountain is the absolute worst single Noel has ever released. I'am almost embarrassed for him to of released this!
Yes people want something different but it almost feels like Holy Mountain was made to release something different sacraficing all quality. I hope to God the entire alblum is not like this! I'm in a bit of a shock because this is the first time I have ever listened to a single by Noel and said to my self "this is complete and utter garbage.
Sometimes supporting a singer or song writer is knowing when to give feedback and say "you f'd up" I would encourage everyone who gave this a high rating to consider if you are giving this single a high rating out of emotion? Because it is new? To show your devotion and support to Noel?
Do not encourage this...this single is absolutely trash. It is cringe worthy! I have always thought that Noel for marketing reasons has always said "this is the best song I have ever written" and in this case he said it but know there is no way in hell he really believes it.
If the rest of the alblum is like this, I would rather Noel cancel the release and go back to the drawing board and wait another life time for an alblum that actually is worthy for the name Noel Gallager on it.
There is absolutely nothing to this song other than a bunch of noise, distorted vocals and crappy atremp for verse and chorus.
I will say yes it is not a zero in the grand scheme of music but for Noel where most songs are a 9/10, zero does serve a purpose. A way to say "ah son you done f'd up"

I stand by my zero rating and I'm so disgusted and let down by what I have heard in Holy Mountain that I finally broke down and made an account so I can vent my frustrations after being a fan since 94.
Let me be clear, love Noel want to support him but can not accept garbage like Holy Mountain with out speaking up.

Plus, I've signed a million dollar contract with Noel that requires me to like Holy Mountain in exchange for endless flow of cash. I'm what you call a paid protestor. If the rest of the alblum is like this, I would rather Noel cancel the release and go back to the drawing board and wait another life time for an alblum that actually is worthy for the name Noel Gallager on it. There is absolutely nothing to this song other than a bunch of noise, distorted vocals and crappy atremp for verse and chorus. I will say yes it is not a zero in the grand scheme of music but for Noel where most songs are a 9/10, zero does serve a purpose. A way to say "ah son you done f'd up" This single is trash and honestly even just by it being on the alblum even if the rest is good degrades the over all quality of every other song just by ever being made in the first place. Zero's you are my true hereo's! We don't accept garbage from the greatest singer and song writer of all time because we know what he is capable of. I can only imagine all the yes sir's around him who told him Holy Mountain is good. I stand by my zero rating and I'm so disgusted and let down by what I have heard in Holy Mountain that I finally broke down and made an account so I can vent my frustrations after being a fan since 94. Let me be clear, love Noel want to support him but can not accept garbage like Holy Mountain with out speaking up. And yet by the same token, there are many fans on here absolutely loving this new track, giving it 10/10, and claiming it to be the best thing he has done since Some Might Say was released (I'm one of them). So although you are utterly disgusted, there are many fans who are rejoicing right now, so Noel has done something right. He just isn't appealing to you anymore. I for one love the new single, and I don't appreciate you stating I am not a fan of Oasis because I like this, or that you think I am bullshitting. To me this is the best single he has released since All Around the World, and the main reason I love this track because it reminds me of something from the Be Here Now era. Now before you think I am drinking the Noel cool aid, I hated just about everything from Oasis Mk 2, post 2000, and despise DBTT and DOYS, probably as much as you hate this new single. This new single pisses over every single released post 2000, and also pisses over many of the tracks from the Oasis Mk 2 albums era in general. It also pisses over much of his last 2 albums too. The last time Noel sounded this good was 1997. |
