However awful the news of Bowie's passing is, I think it's important that we don't forget just how good this album is; after all, he made it as his final gift to us all, and he must have gone through great strain physically and mentally in order to do that, so the least we can do is appreciate the final thing.
And so my rankings for the tracks as if it were just any other album I'd lived with for a few days now:
1. Blackstar 10/10 2. 'Tis a Pity She Was a Whore 8.5/10 - definite grower 3. Lazarus 9.5/10 - would have given it an 8 before yesterday... 4. Sue (Or In a Season of Crime) 9.5/10 5. Girl Loves Me 10/10 6. Dollar Days 10/10 7. I Can't Give Everything Away 8.5/10

Anyone think the guitar at the end of I Can't Give Everything Away sounds very Ronson? Wonder if that was intentional...

Dollar Days is my new personal theme song, and I don't even know what it means.
I think it contrasts a man approaching death with his recollections of his youth, being poor and having meaningless sex. At least that's how I figured 'Dollar Days, survival sex.' I sometimes have pound days when I'm broke and need to live off a pound a day, so I assume dollar days are like that? It seems that part of the narrator's life came when they were younger, and they now hope to summon that youthful, defiant spirit (I'm dying to push their backs against the grain) to face death with the same nonchalance they once faced adversity (If I'll never see The English evergreens I'm running to/ it's nothing to me)

That's how I exactly feel and think! Many people say it's too painful to listen to this album, but I haven't listened to anything else than this album since last Friday. Put on your red shoes and dance the blues

The guy releases what could easily be the record of the year and dies two days later. It's just insane.
Blackstar is really one of Bowie's best albums and I can't stop listening to it. I can't even choose favourite songs, it's all quality from beginning to end. Jazzy suites, rock tracks, ballads, electronic pop... Fuck, it's even got a track in Nadsat! Plus the sequencing is very interesting; I'm particularly glad he decided to place I Can't Give Everything Away as the last song. Quite a fitting way to end such a brilliant career.
The one thing that truly pains me is that Blackstar sounds more like the beginning of a new era for the artist than a swan song. But that's Bowie for you.

I know a lot of people don't care about charts, but this album is not only now projected to go #1 in the UK, but the US too. He'll end Adele's reign at the top of charts for the first #1 album of his career in the US (shocking that this is his first).
Somehow that feels so fitting for him to be the one to knock off Adele.

I care when knocking Adele off the top is on the cards! Silly cow dethroned Be Here Now (although not really - Oasis still sold more in seven days!!)

Blackstar (the song) is incredible, the break at around 4:20 with the strings and when Bowie sings ''something happened on the day he died'' is fucking beautiful, can't stop playing it.

Yeah, and then just when you feel you're kind of easing into the song, the "I'm a blackstar!" bit comes in and unsettles you all over! Personally, I love it when the bluesy bit comes in just after it - that sax in the background is just classic Bowie. And just when you think 'damn, this has a groove to it,' you're thrown straight back to the almost soul-infused balladry bit of before... and then one more round of blues, before back to Gregorian chanting about solitary candles... A complete and utter MASTERPIECE.

Think it's really lovely what Rough Trade are doing with donating their profits from Bowie stuff for the month to Cancer Research, so decided to buy a 12'' (also, admittedly, I want desperately to see Adele get absolutely trounced in the charts this week).
Just need a way to listen to it now...
Anyone any suggestions for record players? @wadfalkirk, you listen to vinyl, don't you?

The records themselves, the cleaning equipment, if I want to record and rip the audio, the LP player itself, the needle cartridges, all that fancy stuff.

It can depends on how you intend to listen to the records, i.e. through a hi-fi system or through your computer. In either case, I'd avoid getting a USB turntable and instead get a regular RCA output and then buy an RCA to USB convertor if you want to save the music to your PC. I'd probably recommend Pro-Ject as they seem to have a good range of products, from high end to affordable, which offer a very minimalistic design and feature set but are very well built. www.project-audio.com/main.php?info=turntables

Bowie and Kate Bush should have collaborated sometime in the 80s, would have been awesome.

Dollar Days is pure beauty. Does anybody know if it's Bowie himself playing the saxophone?
I've been listening to Bowie extensively for the last week and I feel both privileded and somehow guilty. Priviledged because one week ago I only owned/knew a Best Of and I now realise that I have so much other music created by Bowie to explore and listen to. At the same time I feel guilty because he had to die to make me realise what I am missing. You know, I loved many songs, but never really dug deeper, although I knew I would someday check out other stuff by him. It somehow even keeps me from buying his albums at the moment because it feels so much like jumping on the bandwagon. Quite silly actually. After all, what will stay forever is his music and I fully appreciate that I am able to explore it from now on.

I totally get where you're coming from, even though I was lucky enough to stumble across him around the time The Next Day came out myself, but honestly, just go for it -- if you're gonna jump on any bandwagon, it may as well be one that encourages the listening of David Bowie records, right?

Apart from Modern Love (which I've never been that bothered by tbh) and the re-recorded version of Cat People (in my opinion, inferior to the original one he did with Giorgio Moroder), Let's Dance is a bloody brilliant pop record.

It's without a doubt one of my least favourite Bowie's album that I have listened to. I have a deep hate relationship about China Girl. Never have been a big fan of Let's Dance (the song)too, tbh. The 2 best tracks on here are Modern Love and Criminal World imo but still, I find the album alright at maximum. Still WAY better than Never Let Me Down though...
