The two key facets of Bowie's songwriting: instantly recognisable hooks, and sheer weirdness. The Next Day proved that Bowie could still write ruddy good, very accessible pop/rock tunes, hopefully this one will prove that Bowie can still do weird.
Employing a bunch of unknown jazz musicians to play on the record is certainly a good start. But I must confess, I'll miss his usual band if they're not at all - especially Earl Slick, his funky guitar playing is perfect for a cat like Bowie.
This Black Star song we've heard about, if it's half as good as the last time Bowie did a ten-minute title track, this album'll be something to look forward to...

So does anyone think it may then be a continuation of The Next Day - in terms of sound? Did he not record a vast wealth of material for that album, so makes sense he's been tweaking the others for the past couple of years perhaps. I can't think of anyone being disappointed with an album of similar quality to The Next Day to be honest.

Didn't Visconti say Bowie recorded about 28 tunes for The Next Day? There were fourteen tunes that made it onto the record, and eight tunes left over for the deluxe edition, so that would leave him with a bit to work with. Of course, vintage 70s Bowie was notable for never having a record that sounded the same, and by the sound of that theme he's done for that show on Sky, it seems like he might have regained his old eclecticism, but it all depends on whether the material he's got left over can be manipulated into fitting into a new sound. If not, I certainly wouldn't complain if we just got The Next Day 2, it was a fabulously well produced record, after all.

The Next Day mined a fairly similar vein to Heathen and Reality after an extended hiatus. I think Bowie probably used up the best of those sessions outtakes in a fairly extended round of bonus tracks. I expect we'll see a certain thematic continuation from the Next Day, but more similar to songs he's released in the interim such as Sue (In a Season of Crime), Tis Pity She Was a Whore and Blackstar. I think there's a reason Heat closed the last album despite being so different to the rest of that album's material and following an obvious album closer: as a nod to the next direction his work is taking. I really expect a very Scott Walker influenced record. And more 'The Drift' than 'Scott 3'

Imagine if Blackstar is the name of Bowie's new alter-ego...

Any idea who is producing this? Tony Visconti I'd guess...

When I saw this thread, my first reaction was that somebody found an old The Next Day post and bumped it.
Really didn't expect another new Bowie album. Bring it on.

What the fuck is Bowie going on about in You Feel So Lonely You Could Die?
Whatever it is, it sounds great.

Anyone ever heard this one before?
Apparently it's one of Noel's favourites. Must say, I've never heard it before. Glad I have now though, it's a little gem.

TRACKLISTING: Blackstar ’Tis A Pity She Was A Whore Lazarus Sue (Or In A Season Of Crime) Girl Loves Me Dollar Days I Can’t Give Everything Away
It seems like the original reports were right - only seven tracks, band comprised of unknown jazz musicians, nearly 10 minute long title track...
Bit disappointed Sue and 'Tis A Pity are on there, when they've already been out a year

David Bowie is hands down. The most creative artist that ever lived , he's not the best guitarist , not the best singer , but he is the best performer , he never needed a band , he gives you iphis allegedly time ......the best
