Noel could easily have released a 7 song experimental record like Blackstar from the AA sessions

From only my first listen, I'd've said swap those letters around and turn the W on its head, because the tune was undoubtedly the biggest WTF moment (and there were many) I had when I first listened to the record this morning. However, now I absolutely love it. Can't get enough of that hook. Wonderful Bowie vocals (seriously, how good does he sound for 68?!) and the production's absolutely outstanding. Lennon2217, I can see you being a Girl Loves Me man. And I have a sneaking suspicion the new version of Sue might prompt a "fuck yeah" from you... Where the fuck did Monday go? You're nearly there. and yes, Lazarus is a tune. Really loving it!

Outstandingly good.
I wasn't the biggest Bowie fan, had a best of for the iPod but gave A New Day a listen when it came out and thought it was great but this is a fantastic record, I love the dark feeling to it.

Magnificent album. First of all, the packaging and the artwork is absolutely beautiful, especially the lyrics booklet. The vinyl even smelled of liquorice!
There isn't a song I dislike in there. The standout tracks for me are ★, Lazarus, Girl Loves Me, Dollar Days and I Can't Give Everything Away (I realise that's over two thirds of the album but it really is that good!). I also love the contrast of the fast, almost breakbeat rhythm section and Bowie's operatic vocals on Sue. Thematically, it's a pretty bleak and dark album, which I suppose is in keeping with the name and the artwork. Not that that's a bad thing of course.
David Bowie is one of the only artists I know who never stagnates with a particular sound. He's constantly trying out new concepts and nearly always pulls it off incredibly well. He puts other artists to shame in this respect. Never stop making music Mr Bowie!

The Next Day was my favourite album of 2013, and by how I'm feeling about this one at the moment, I'd be surprised if Blackstar wasn't my favourite album of this year. Can't wait to see what he does next, and the fact I can even say that with a straight face, about an artist who's been going since the sixties, and is on his 28th album, is just staggering. New Bowie music is still an event. It still means something. New McCartney music? New Stones stuff? Not so much.
One can only imagine what following him in the seventies must have been like...

Stand-outs for me:
Blackstar - nothing short of a masterpiece, as far as I'm concerned. There's just so much going on (and all of it brilliant), every listen is like a little adventure of its own. I only realised on about my 20th listen that there was a female vocalist on there with him, singing the "In the villa of Ormen..." bits. Lazarus - a perfect mix of Cure/Joy Division guitars and some sultry, moody, even a bit funky sax. And Bowie sings the line "I was looking for your ass"! Winner. Girl Loves Me - completely mad and utterly brilliant. Dollar Days - achingly gorgeous ballad.

I think Bowie just cemented himself as a creative genius with the release of the album and his passing.

69 years old and still moving. Class. It's pretty sad that this is the first post that came up when I clicked into this thread. A few days ago it was a celebration, a joyous occasion, a new album and another candle for David. Now struck down in shock that a music icon has passed away. One thing is for sure tho his life will not be forgotten. After nearly 40 years of releasing music he still manages to go out on top! Haven't listened to Black Star yet but delighted with all the positive reviews it has received and that he lived to see the release and instant success of it! As you said yourself Mimmi. Fuck cancer

It's amazing how he fought to finish this album... the signs of it being a goodbye were there and no-one noticed. I was just going to casually buy it in a month or two, hoping that maybe he'll do a few gigs....

It was interesting. As a pre-pubescent male his look (Ziggy) was disturbing but Ronson made up for all that. He had a cool guitar player and cool tunes. Then he dumped him and went disco. Bummer. Station To Sation was a bit better though and then he hooked up with Eno and embraced weird, new wave-y music. Good stuff. Heroes was wonderful. His My Way.
