Imagine an EP of the album's highlights: Everything Now, Creature Comfort, Electric Blue, Put Your Money On Me, and We Don't Deserve Love. (Substitute Signs Of Life if you're so inclined.) Would that not have been a more worthy addition to their discography than a hodgepodge album burdened by twenty minutes' worth of novelty non-songs and clumsy or meandering half-songs? What is the point? That seems to be one of the biggest trends on the forum. Don't like a full album like DOYS, The King of Limbs, A Head Full of Dreams, Gorillaz, The Strokes, etc. well let's just make it an EP!

In my defence, Arcade Fire are a remarkably consistent and meticulous band who have just released an album so disjointed and replete with filler that I immediately assume they wrote half of it at their label's insistence on a short deadline.

I take the band at their word. This is the album they wanted to make. It's been 4 years. They had plenty of time to create other material if they wanted. Let's be honest. This album is good but it contains 3 clunkers (Peter Pan, Chemistry and the Contents). After that it's party time!

No pun intended. It's probably not gonna breakout of being lumped in with that bad middle section that keeps getting blasted in reviews around the globe. It's kinda taken on a life of its own at this point. A stigma like that is tough to shake.

I agree with them.

I agree with them. I'm not talking about the fans. They are biased. I was referring to normal reviews. I know a lot of AF fans that think it's weak as well. Look at this forum, we over inflate the Oasis and Gallagher brothers impact when so many other people would just shrug their shoulders.

Well, the majority of Arcade Fire fans like it, and I'll take that over the opinions of reviewers. I divide the record like this: GREAT START: 1. Everything_Now 2. Everything Now 3. Signs of Life 4. Creature Comfort 5. Peter Pan WEAKER MIDDLE: 6. Chemistry 7. Infinite Content GREAT ENDING: 8. Infinite_Content 9. Electric Blue 10. Good God Damn [Really wish this had a better chorus, though. Love the verses.] 11. Put Your Money on Me 12. We Don't Deserve Love 13. Everything Now (Continued) I don't even dislike Chemistry or Infinite Content that much - I just think they could have done with replacing the former with a more fleshed out centrepiece. I'm a fan of this album.

IsThose are some weaker songs. They are getting panned. Rightfully so in some respects. This isn't gonna go away and will be referenced on the next album cycle of reviews as well. Will arcade fire make the same mistake twice? I can already see it in my head.

Happy 7th birthday to the greatest rock album of the decade! If I could have it back, all of the time that we wasted, I'd only waste it again...
And if I could have it back, all of the time that we wasted, you know I'd only waste it again and again and again with you...

A really good in depth interview. Didn't realize the emotional gravity surrounding Peter Pan. Win is dead on with his criticism of "reviews" saying he raps on Signs of Life. What a joke. Also, he's so defensive about Chemistry. I'm sorry but you are wrong on that tune. I don't care what your private warm up gig last October told you. People have instantly not dug it. First time I heard it was when someone put it on YouTube over 2 months ago from a live show. Didn't like. Sounded like Get Right and Flashbulb Eyes hybrid. Long before reviews were written.

If you're in the 'Peter Pan' camp and dig the song, then you're going to dig the album. If not, then it's probably going to be a struggle.
I loved the tune on first hearing and so I'm puzzled by the reaction it has received.

I loved the tune on first hearing and so I'm puzzled by the reaction it has received. This current narrative is proving difficult for the band to break that the album is really weak and spoiled by the middle section. That's only partially true. The album still has 6-7 belters that are worth the price of admission alone. Not fair to completely trash something because people don't like Peter Pan, chemistry or the content twins.

The Escapist , you know how you said you can't see any influence from The Cure in Arcade Fire's music? Well I was listening to Creature Comfort just then, and I suddenly wondered when I got to the end, 'hmmm, a big cinematic synth fades out to make way for the random tinkling of a set of wind chimes...where 'ave I heard that before?'. A sneaky reference to The Cure, perhaps?

A sneaky reference to The Cure, perhaps? I saw Creature Comfort described as "goth-disco" a while ago, which would definitely be a cool evolution for The Cure Win says in that Zane Lowe interview that Creature Comfort was a tight bag of a lot of influences - knowing how much he loves The Cure, I wouldn't be surprised if they're in there somewhere. The dark churn of the instrumental certainly suggests so, and of course the wind chimes too.

I just listened to the new album. What the fuck... I liked their first 3 albums a lot and liked a lot of Reflektor. But this is just.. Everything Now is a commercially likeable tune that I'm tired of from hearing on the radio. But it's actually one of the best tunes on there. A lot of them are just boring disco/electro tracks. I miss "the suburbs" while listening to this.

Everything Now is the #1 album in America and England. That is their 3rd straight USA #1. Amazing. If you asked me in 2004 if they would ever get #1 in billboard top 200 I'd say you were on drugs.

I wish Arcade Fire came around in a different musical climate - they deserve to be so much bigger than they are.

Wonder how inflated the numbers are because of the cd give away with ticket sales. I have three copies in my house.

A week (and a bit) on, my two cents: Everything Now 8.5Signs of Life 7Creature Comfort 9Peter Pan 7.5Chemistry 6Infinite Content / Infinite_Content 4Electric Blue 10 Good God Damn 8 Put Your Money on Me 8 We Don't Deserve Love 10Everything Now (continued) / Everything_Now (continued) 6average rating = 7.64 If Chemistry was about a minute shorter, and if the anti-consumerism/'information overload' ideas of the Infinite Contents were fully fleshed out and maybe - as The Escapist suggested - made into one six minute centre-piece, we'd be absolutely laughing. As is, I think the record's a good addition to their catalogue, with some great tunes on it that have been wonderfully produced. I look forward to seeing what they do next.
