No matter what happens with this band or what people think of them, their albums will always be special to me, especially the early stuff. A Rush of Blood to the Head is my second favorite album ever, and all of the b-sides and unreleased songs from that period are amazing. Any arguments against its quality shows the full power of the media narrative of peoples' minds - people only hate on Coldplay because its cool... Oh, please. It sounds like you've created your own narrative. Yellow's one of the biggest songs of the 00's, I'm sure everyone would be thrilled. Coldplay are unlikable for many reasons beyond songwriting.

They were likable and as about offensive as Travis until Chris Martin decided he wanted to be Bonos love child and think he was in the biggest band that ever lived.

Coldplay are unlike able for reasons 'beyond songwriting'? Surely the whole point of liking music is to like them purely on the songwriting merits? If the song writing is good enough, I couldn't care how Chris Martin acts. Okay, I draw the line at Gary Glitter style behaviour, but to hate on a band for reasons other than songwriting, then you fall into the category of being image obsessed and letting other irrelevant factors take hold over the importance of the actual music. Thats just reducing music to a trivial level.

Clearly songwriting will always be the crux of people liking music, however there are many individual elements inside and outside of the songwriting that are open for scrutinization and quite rightly so. Sure, there's always going to be some very trivial elements, but anyone who holds them in any kind of regard won't go far in the music community and command little real respect online. Do you really believe such a wide audience of people hate on Coldplay because it's cool? I'm sure there are a few who do do it for that reason, but you must understand that there are many other reasons to jump on the band beyond the trivial.

This is despite the fact they're musically one the best bands of all time.

I equally knows dozens of people who hate Oasis not because of the actual music but all the bullshit bravado Liam/Noel gave off between 1994 and 2000.

Don't Panic Shiver Yellow Trouble In My Place The Scientist Clocks God Put A Smile Upon Your Face Moses Speed of Sound Fix You Talk The Hardest Part Violet Hill Viva La Vida Lost Lovers In Japan Life In Technicolor II Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall Paradise Charlie Brown Atlas Magic Midnight Sky Full of Stars

Millions of people "hate" Coldplay because it's cool to do so. Millions of people "love" Nirvana because it's cool to do so. I'm not saying secretly everyone loves Coldplay and hates Nirvana, but let's say I wasn't a massive Coldplay fan but liked a few tunes. If someone asked "What do you think of Coldplay?" I think more people would be inclined to go "God, I hate them" than tell the truth. Because it's cool. If the same question was asked to someone with the same attitude towards Nirvana then they be more likely to say "God, I love them". Sad, but true.
Somewhat ironic coming from a Radiohead fan, I know, but the point stands.

So, they've essentially played the hit single from every album apart from Parachutes.

The new video was filmed in India - I hope it's got some Revolver style Indian organs and sitars on it! Hey one can hope! If the album has influences out with mainstream popular music (much like the Viva La Vida era which was very eclectic), then we may be in for a good album.....
But it will most likely be teaming with synths and some pricks like Deadmau5 and Rihanna will pop up in order for Coldplay to voluntarily fuck themselves yet again. I mean, I just can't get my head around the album name for a start - anything called 'A Head Full Of Dreams' is destined to be utter shit. I'd like to think that was only a tentative title, but I'm probably clutching at straws. That said, Heathen Chemistry is an awesome name for an album...

Coldplay's best characteristic was their subtle nature that they inherited musically from artists like Radiohead and Jeff Buckley and then they combined that with the anthemic melodic quality of britpop bands. They do bombast really well too, but my favorite Coldplay songs like Don't Panic/Clocks seem to have an eerie subtle beauty to them, Songs like A Rush of Blood to the Head, Spies, Trouble kind of have a dark side to them. They can only write some really enjoyable alternative guitar rock as well - Crest of Waves, In My Place, Shiver are great.
They do bombast well when they don't soak it into too much Chris Martin melodrama. Songs like Politik are among their finest, and they do a ballad well when they do it gracefully.
They are a pretty dynamic band and there's a reason they made it big, but they've kinda let their poorest qualities take over while continuously making hollow music.

People forget that Coldplay once had a reputation (2000 to 2004) of being a sad, depressing band. Boy oh boy have times and perspectives changed. Now they are viewed as a pop/rock monster. Sorta like a more talented, british, Maroon 5. Chris Martin wants to be like Adam Levine.

I actually like Every Teardrop is a Waterfall. It's a big colourful triumph. I think Mylo would have made a great EP: 1. Hurts Like Heaven (Inc. Mylo Xyloto) 2. Paradise 3. Charlie Brown 4. Every Teardrop is a Waterfall (Inc. MMIX) 5. Major Minus 6. Don't Let it Break Your Heart (Inc. A Hopeful Transmissions) 7. Up With the Birds Feeeeeel the hits... Unfortunately there isn't enough substance beneath Eno's style to support a full lp and the rest of the tracks are...ugh. Also, Ghost Stories should have looked like this: 1. Always in my Head 2. Magic 3. Ghost Story 4. All Your Friends 5. Midnight 6. Another's Arms 7. Oceans 8. Atlas 9. O

I do dislike their music (at least since Viva la vida), but not because it's cool to do or what, but because I truly dislike the things they do since. I do understand the meaning of your post though. But at the end of the day, everyone knows how much it's cool to slag off Oasis in the "musical press" but you know we are all here

Don't Panic In My Place Shiver Clocks Yellow The Scientist Speed of Sound Life In Technicolor II A Rush of Blood to the Head Fix You A Message Viva La Vida Violet Hill Death And All His Friends (or Twisted Logic) And then a disc 2 would have the majority of B-sides.
