I'd rather listen to the shittiest shit on DGSS than fuckin' A Sky Full of Stars. ASFOS really is that awful.

I think Coldplay shines when they focus less on creating U2-esque, radio-friendly singalongs for the masses. They really do have the talent, but I highly doubt they will ever touch their first two albums. (Sounds like another band, doesn't it?)
They have released some fantastic songs since then (like Speed of Sound, Life In Technicolor ii, Lost?, Kingdom Come, and Lovers in Japan come to mind), but I don't think they've touched the brilliance of their earlier material. If they go back to basics and release something similar to Such a Rush, High Speed, Sparks, Spies, God Put a Smile Upon Your Face, and The Scientist, I'll be a very happy camper.

Why does it seem like Coldplay always have a new album being released? Seriously.

I find it ironic that Coldplay seemed more mature with their writing (think Jeff Buckley) on their first album and have gradually shifted towards Maroon 5 pop.

Coldplay have always been a well oiled weathervane in the heavy winds of mainstream popularity. Mature or not, when they begun it was post-Britpop acoustic, piano ballads were the heavy hitters that could steal the airwaves and naturally as the winds have changed, the band have done their absolute utmost to coincide.
They're the submissive princes of pop-rock whose every action is focus-grouped through the filter of "will this make us more popular". A deplorably pathetic vehicle whose fuel of talent is sounding worryingly low. But why threat as they've happily glued themselves to an environment that doesn't really care for it anyway.

I like 'submissive' for a few reasons and it stands as a good all rounder, but I'll happily throw a few more their way if the mood so takes me.

I saw them in their early days in small arenas and also in Hampden stadium. Both different set lists but still blew me away! An unusual choice for me but I have to be honest, I have seen hundreds of gigs & they can put on a show! I get the U2 reference though & don't deny it. I have seen U2 just the once & they were superstars man. I don't have a want to see them again. Coldplay however...I can't wait!

Once at the SECC in the early 2000s, once at Bellahouston Park in 2005, once at Hampden, and Once at the Emirates and in Paris. I agree, early to mid 2000s they were great but I thought things started to change at the Hampden gig, I was bored at it.That continued to the Emirates and Paris ones a few years ago.

No matter what happens with this band or what people think of them, their albums will always be special to me, especially the early stuff. A Rush of Blood to the Head is my second favorite album ever, and all of the b-sides and unreleased songs from that period are amazing.

Like you said, all the material recorded during AROBTTH are fantastic. They played it simple and direct. Great stuff.

Crests of Waves should have replaced A Whisper on the album, then the whole thing would be pretty perfect: 1. Politik 2. In My Place 3. God Put a Smile Upon Your Face 4. The Scientist 5. Clocks 6. Daylight 7. Green Eyes 8. Warning Sign 9. Crests of Waves 10. A Rush of Blood to the Head 11. Amsterdam Mmmmmmmmmm....

Maybe, but I think the album needs an acoustic throwback to Parachutes. Maybe I Bloom Blaum?

Any arguments against its quality shows the full power of the media narrative of peoples' minds - people only hate on Coldplay because its cool, but if Noel Gallagher wrote Yellow, people on here would be creaming themselves! And betcha if Chris Martin started injecting heroin, wore a trilby hat and dated Kate Moss, he could write any old plodding tripe and the NME would wank themselves silly over it.....

I like Crest of Waves better than A Whisper (which is still decent mind - especially the end) but I would have definitely put I Ran Away on there. That shuffly rhythm and the reverb drenched guitars from Jonny Buckland give it a post-rock/ shoe gaze influence. That ambient drone from his guitar at the end really does add to the dark melancholy of this tune. It sums up this entire era for me and the fact it was only a b-side shows just how everything they touched turned to gold for this album. They recorded it in Liverpool and Ian McCulloch would often be present with them when they were recording and interestingly I get a sense of that subdued melancholia that is present in his Echo & the Bunnymen albums - most notably Ocean Rain.
