the drumming on What's The Story was pretty good but as a live drummer he's really poor. I only realised that listening to the brotherly love tour where his brother took over. He gave the band a more rockin'sound wich i think they missed during the be here now and the giants period

Oasis drummers got better with every change. White was alright, a big improvement on Tony

Now I'm not a professional musician or anything but I never noticed anything bad about his drumming.

Best drummer Oasis ever had. He had a more varied rhythm to his style than any other, and stopped many Oasis songs from being plodding.

His performance on WTSMG is spectacular, but he was mostly average from BHN on. He's not a rock drummer. I always hated how he jazzed up Supersonic's intro.

Agree with matt, it was still pretty simple but effective. Just listen to a song like Wonderwall. I mean, all drummers for Oasis were good in their own right, but Whitey is my favourite. Starkey is the one that annoys me a bit. He just whacks away. Still a great drummer though, but definitely better for The Who than for Oasis.

Personally think all the other drummers would have destroyed those recordings by banging the drums like that gorilla from the Cadbury adverts. Subtlety isn't really a thing Oasis were ever good at (or bothered trying), but with Alan White on drums, they certainly sounded a lot more sophisticated.

The only complaint I have about Whitey's drumming was that he never hit the drums hard enough. This is probably due to his jazz stylings though. His drums on It's Gettin' Better (Man!!) are fanastic though!

Come again? I wouldn't say he's not much of a "rockin'" drummer after all...

He gave the band a more rockin'sound wich i think they missed during the be here now and the giants period discuss I wouldn't say he's a poor drummer, but from his own interviews in Rhythm magazine he was into funk stuff like Parliament, Sly & the Family Stone so he didn't really have a background in rock. Steve his brother was the jazz fan but his work with Weller in The Style Council and Solo gave him alot of experience with rock and other styles. The only thing that I can think anyone ever mentioned really that went against Alan as a drummer is for whatever reason he was a member of Starclub but didnt actually play on the LP they recorded when he was in the band- though other sources gave it that he wasnt recruited until after the record was completed so not 100% there. He's also the same drummer all but one track off (WTS) MG? and all of HC, so are you saying the drumming there is ok, or that he was shit in general? EDIT- Sorry realised talking you were about live. I still think he was a good live drummer, and certainly rate him ahead of the latter two who only seemed to have brushes or whack it in their arsenal with Oasis.

He did become lazy in his last few years in the band.

I have said this in countless threads. Oasis were never about the drumming , it's very basic

He did become lazy in his last few years in the band. Is that true though? We should never take Noel's word as gospel as we all know. I've heard various accounts such as the fact he was unhappy that his drums were mixed so low on Heathen Chemistry (though he should be thankful to receive low billing on such a terrible album - the only band member who didn't do anything wrong on that album). Another more interesting account is he left in 2004 after his apparent uselessness during the Death In Vegas sessions primarily because the band were using programmed drum loops.

Alan was perfectly competent drumming for the band, but he never did anything stand out. Very average.
Despite some flaws live, Zak was my favourite. He was great all over Dig Out Your Soul and helped give a very straightforward band a touch of originality.
