It's a good record overall but dont believe the hype, it's britpop crazy these days, people are well into the revival so the grades are bit high here id say.
I'd give it solid 7 after 3 listens, but then again the experience is weird because half the tracks were already available on youtube.
Comparing to their past record is a bit soon i think. I mean, i hated 13 at first when it came out, took me a few days / weeks.
I'd say Magic Whip is like their Bsides from the 90s. One or two commercial songs and the rest is really eclectic.
Blur can do no wrong anyway, unlike Oasis, anything Damon release is loved by the press.

This looks awesome but it is really hard to believe because of the songs i have heard so far and because of what are you writing here. Middle class journalists love a middle class band. Anyway, they're critically acclaimed but they fail to deliver to the public, which is the most important thing. They have a fan-base, not that big, and they just need to make them happy.

This is me writing while my euphoria modus is switched on! I just listened to The Magic Whip and I'm VERY impressed. With the refrain of Terracotta Heart I get the same feeling as with the part in "You and Me" (you know..the "you can blame me, blame me, blame me, blame me, when the twilight comes, all goes round again..."). I'm IN LOVE with that song! Do any of you know the feeling of getting to know a song and after that wondering how on earth you lived your whole life without knowing this song? Okay, this time it wasn't possible to know the song, but still! Can't wait to listen to the whole thing again, but for now, I have to listen to Terracotta Heart on repeat. (Only Noel with his performance on Jools Holland may interrupt it - who else if not Noel )

You'd be surprised at how many people sneer at Blur in the UK - anything to do with Britpop generally. Not helped by the fact Alex James is big mates with David Cameron. Not that I care, I judge music on its own merits. Not listened to the album, will wait til I get my copy next week, looking forward to it!

Blur has always divided people anyway, a bit like Oasis : you either dig it or you dont.
This record will get stronger after each listen, no doubt. But you gotta be a Blur fan to appreciate it, that's true.

So i'm not the biggest Blur fan, maybe that means i can listen with a more objective ear than big fans

I'm not too sure about "Ong Ong" yet. Maybe it's a bit too "direct"? I don't know how to describe it precisely, maybe some of you feel the same...Lonesome street is another one I'm not really sure about whether to like it or not. It's definitely not one of my favourites of the album. It'll be interesting to see how my favourites change and how others grow as soon as I've listened to the album a lot more.

damon said "I went a little populist here", talking about Ong Ong. Is clearly a sing-along song that will work his wonders at hyde park

Ong ong is a good singalong, nothing wrong with it This album gets better after every listen. I restrain myself to one listen a day, and clearly it's a strong effort. Maybe not as much "Blur" as the previous records, i hear elements of Albarn solo and the good the bad and the queen too. Maybe the fact that it was made with bits from Damon's ipad is the reason. But the songs are way better than Everyday Robots. Under the Westway and the puritan would fit nicely on the record

I gave it a quick spin. Here are my initial thoughts. Really digging Lonesome Street, My Terracotta Heart, Pyongyang and Ong Ong. Somebody mentioned it earlier but Terracotta Heart sounds like it could have easily been on Everyday Robots.

Well almost all of the slow melancholic tunes of this record could have.

This is a solid album. I have to be the right mindset or mood to listen to blur in general but I gave this album a couple spins today. It is great to hear Coxon's crunchy, wobbly, and melodic guitar playing with Damon's voice again. There's something on here for every Blur fan. Whether you like the poppy britpop blur, the alt rock blur, or the electronic blur.
The b-side of the album is really really strong. Ghost Ship to Mirrorball is one of the strongest closing sequences I've heard this year. Those last four songs are really really enjoyable. 3 of my top 5 tracks from the album are from that sequence. Ong Ong is just a fun track. Coxon's playing on Ghost Ship and Mirrorball is just wonderful. He's tone is sublime and slick. More songs like Ghost Ship please guys, this is the type of song I've always thought Blur could pull off. Breezy production, soulful vocals, and some jazz licks.
Lonesome Street sounds like prime britpop era Blur, Go Out is pounding groove that is worth a listen just to hear Coxon's guitar playing (seriously awesome sounds) reminds me of their self-titled album with all the noise, and My Terracotta Heart as others have mentioned sounds a lot like Damon's solo work. Thought I Was A Spaceman is a pretty spacey jam that reminds me a bit of blur circa 13.
The biggest thing for me is it sounds like the band had fun making this. It's been so long since they've been together that this could have been a bit weird kinda like The Strokes past couple albums. This album is like seeing your best childhood friends after many years. Kinda pick up right where you left off to a degree. Its familiar and brings back a lot of fond memories, while making room for some new ones.

Remind me of slow country and some other song damon did with tony allen _____ "MADE IN HONG KONG", a documentary about the recording process of the magic whip

Nothing worth mentioning really, the host is a complete idiot. He's very famous here in Italy but I think he's a talentless prick. Basically, he says: "After meeting Noel Gallagher I'm ready for anything! If you want to say something, it's better to say it now, not tomorrow on Twitter." He's referring to the fact that Noel said the interview with him was crap in one of his latest tour diaries. Actually it wasn't crap. It was worse! Fuckin' embarrassing to watch

Fuckin' embarrassing to watch Yeah he could at least learn some English and save us from that terribly loud and ridiculous overdubbing in Italian. Painful to watch foreign guests having to struggle to talk with that voice over. Anyway, I think Fazio did better this time.
