Watching Chris Martin front U2 is strange. Probably a dream come true for him. X&Y era Coldplay tried so hard to be U2 it was actually really funny.

I have their new album since past year and know some songs, but only now this week I had a proper listen to it, it's better than I expected but not that much.
Some things reminded me of Pop, Cedarwood Road could have been on Pop easily, the album sounds more or less like a mix of Pop and NLOTH, the highs aren't higher than past albums, and also the lows aren't lower too.
I would give it a 6,5/10, U2 is passing trough an era much like The Rolling Stones were in the 90's.

New tour looks really nifty, I thought the 360 stage dwarfed them too much. What I've heard, Bono's voice is holding up really well for a guy of 55, and they played old classics like The Electric Co. Must be years since they last played that one!

I like U2 a lot. Probably more than most. Their concerts are still bad ass events to behold. I only wish Bono and company would stop trying to be "liked" by everyone. That isn't going to happen anymore and it never really was like that in their hey day either. They had an insanely awesome run commercially selling albums. That era is now over. Just concentrate on great music, not over the top ideas on how to preserve your relevance in the charts.

Instead, they should focus on doing what their instincts tell them, not what modern day culture tells them. They were good at letting their instincts guide them and that's when they were at their best. Some of the greatest works of art were never popular in their day, but endured only because of quality. U2 should take note of that, rather than appease the mainstream by releasing poor songs like I'll Go Crazy and, from this album - the one I'm not keen on at all - Song For Someone. Similar argument with Noel and Oasis.

I still listen to 'Every Breaking Wave', 'Sleep Like A Baby Tonight' and few others along with the bonus disc on a regular basis.
Good album for an older band.
God bless.

Similar argument with Noel and Oasis. U2 has sold something like a billion albums. Like literally a billion albums. Who cares what your album sells in 2015. Cook up interesting ideas and songs. Be the best YOU can be. Not what your audience would expect from you 15-20 years ago.

Every Breaking Wave is a lovely tune. Especially the bonus version. Other than that, SOI is a slog. Joey Ramone is fun in an awful, dad is washing his sportscar in the driveway with his shirt off kind of way, but the rest is just the sound of a band trying to squeeze orange juice out of a rock. The best I can say about it is that it doesn't have anything quite as bad as I'll Go Crazy or Get on Your Boots (a candidate for the worst first single ever released by a major band). U2 had a great run (1980-2000). Since then, they've been marking time. No shame in that. Bands get old. They run out of ideas. I disagree, I think SOI is a solid album. Far from their greatest, but very enjoyable and probably the best one since Pop. Every Breaking Wave, Sleep Like a Baby Tonight, This Is Where You Can Reach Me Now, The Troubles and especially Cedarwood Road are genuinely good, imho.

Get on Your Boots (a candidate for the worst first single ever released by a major band). absolutely dire. it's the equivalent to if 'ain't got nothin' ' had been the lead-off single from dig out your soul. seeing u2 live for the first time in july, glad i will finally be able to cross them off my 'must see' list. i need to dig into the album and have a good, honest listen. i've heard it maybe 2, 3 times. songs are good, but most are forgettable. my problem with a band like u2 is i always go for the older, more familiar albums. (same with the foo fighters). i need to break that habit.
