Still can't get over O, one of the most heart-breaking, yet greatest songs I've ever heard in a long time.

Give over. I understand Avicii's production isn't to everyone's taste, but I honestly reckon they judged that one perfectly. Not my cup of tea mate, one of the reasons I hate MX so much, I don't like Poppy dancey Coldplay.
Maybe you like bobbing around you're room to it but everything else on the album is great.
I don't like Mylo Xyloto because for the major part, I don't think the songs are any good. It's not the modern electro-dance production that ruins it (although that album is terribly produced and heavily bloated), it is the average songs, and Chris Martin's vocals (never the loudest singer) are drowned out and guitar riffs are buried (e.g. the massive sell out Princess of China, which take Rihanna off it is a decent tune) under gratuitous 'woahs'. A Sky Full of Stars is a brilliant pop song though. It's produced fine and Chris Martin's vocal is one of the best ever. I feel this is the type of song they tried to achieve on Mylo Xyloto but continually fell short. There's not a bad song on the album. I'm pleasantly surprised by the whole album.

I'm not too keen on Mylo Xyloto either, but in the context of Ghost Stories I think A Sky Full Of Stars really works. After half an hour of gloom it's the big payoff the album needs. I suppose, but I just can't get into that song. At least after it you get O, the best song on Ghost Stories, brilliant stuff.

I still think MX suffers from the same fate as DOYS. Top heavy and the second part drags. Still so many quality tunes on MX like: - Hurts Like Heaven - Paradise - Charlie Brown - Us Against The World - Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall - Major Minus Even the EP track Moving To Mars is great.

LOVE Moving to Mars - in my opinion, A Sky Full of Stars is the kinda thing they were aiming for in Mylo Xyloto but never quite achieving. I think Moving To Mars is the sort of song they were trying to write for X&Y - very David Bowie like which I love.

Even the EP track Moving To Mars is great. Moving To Mars is the best thing about Mylo Xyloto.

I think you are right that first half is enjoyable (still can't get into ETIAW) but still think it's a little glossed over production hurt's it even more, it's too far slick and soulless (something you can't accuse older Coldplay albums of). Ghost Stories isn't earth shattering but it's a step back in the right direction, I love it for that closing track O and a few other songs. they still can't escape from been Coldplay, time to get away from the ballads and coy lyrics. would love a U2 Achtung Baby/Zooropa type of transformation for the next album but doubt Martin and Co would take those risks.
Here's my ranking of their albums
1. A Rush of Blood to the Head 2. Viva la Vida 3. Parachutes 4. Ghost Stories 5. X & Y 6. MX

Okay, I've listened to it a few times. It is a decent album certainly better than their last but it doesn't really reach the highs that MX did, or X & Y for that matter. A Sky Full of Stars is a nice sugar rush but I can't listen to it more than 1 or 2 time in a row, it would have fit a lot better on their pervious album but I understand that they needed a festival or pop song on this album. Martin's melodies and vocals carry it well and I guess Avicii could have been more in your face with the techno stuff but it is pretty restrained and it complements Coldplay decently.
The production is superb but a good amount of the songs don't really engage or grip me. The idea of Coldplay trying to be deep/complex (musically or lyrically) at this point is sort of comical. The problem with the production is that you hear Martin's shitty lyrics a lot more, but he does have a great voice and a superb talent with melody.
O is the best song on the album but Always In My Head isn't too far behind. Always In My Head is probably the best song that combines Coldplay's natural/classic songwriting with these new sounds. It sounds familiar but fresh.
Oceans and Magic are nice soundscapes that are decent in songwriting department. Oceans drags at the end though, probably because they had to find some way to lead or build into the wildcard that is A Sky Full Of Stars. Throwing or drenching songs in reverb/delay/atmospherics is really one of the cheapest production techniques out there in my opinion. Yeah, it is nice to listen to but it is really just pretty noise that means nothing, could have reduced it there.
Magic is okay. It is nice within the context of the album but I don't think I'll ever put it on. The rest are just kinda bland for me at least right now.
Ink is something that I don't ever want to hear again though. Really horrible. Up there with some of the shittiest songs that they have done.
It is a nice back to earth album from them. This album had to come out at some point in their career. It will be interesting to see where they go next. It is an okay album that plays nicely all the way through but oddly enough it probably has the least number of truly great Coldplay songs on it. It doesn't offend like MX but it also doesn't engage like the rest of their catalog does. The songs sound better in the context of the album and it is a nice album experience, but I don't know how much I will feel compelled to play it because it is a bit eh. It isn't a singles album at all but only a few songs really shine. It's something I might throw on during a late night walk.
If I had to rank their catalog: Parachutes - 9/10 A Rush Of Blood to the Head - 9/10 X & Y - 5.5/10 Viva La Vida - 8/10 Mylo Xyloto - 4.5/10 Ghost Stories - 6/10

It's gonna be a huge song all summer though. In terms of "Ink", I thought this part of the album had sequencing issues. "True Love" and "Ink" sound very similar, and both sound like long lost cousins of the song "Strawberry Swing" which towers above them both. If I was Coldplay I would have dumped one of them off the album, most likely "Ink". A lot of reviews are mentioning this and I tend to agree, Ghost Stories sounds like a Chris Martin solo album. There are hardly any guitar solos outside the moaning end to "True Love". Also the natural drum sound of Will is almost completely gone through the entire record. Lots of bass but again, is that Guy or something programmed by a producer. It's so slick you can't even tell.

This album shows how important is picking singles before the release. I don't know if this album is any good or not cause i didn't give it a try yet. However good it can be, i was disaffected by these two or three songs i heard and i'm not curious enough what's on it. Is this any good ?
To me, Mylo Xyloto was a good concept of direction in which the band is going and the production was brilliant but it was lacking some solid tunes. It seems like it's the same story with Ghost Stories, right ?

I also think Mylo contains many excellent tunes like Hurts Like Heaven, Charlie Brown and Major Minus to name but a few.

As to Mylo Xyloto, i had this period i was listening to this album constantly everyday and those songs you mentioned are really good, i agree, they used to have this freshness when released. Still, something's lackin' there cause i'm not coming back to this album as often as to X&Y or Rush of Blood to the Head for example.

I think its comfortably their worst album, I give credit to them or any popular band who decide to go in a new direction but the song writing here is weak and the production to smooth with no depth.
My favorite song is actually the bonus track 'all your friends', i wish the album was filled with more songs who that same kind of vibe.
In time if they do more albums it may become what 'Standing on the shoulders..' is to Oasis which in regard most have forgotten even existed.

Magic and A Sky Full of Stars are already big singles. I think that is what people seem to remember these days anyway. The big singles, not the albums from which they came.

Saw them tonight, only played for an hour but they were really good. The new songs they did came across well live but it was songs like Yellow and Viva la Vida which got the best reactions, which is to be expected.

Ghost Stories, great soundscapes but some lyrics are appaling to say the least. I loved the Piano on Sky but that effect where it goes to nowhere and takes over the vocals isnt quite in my boat. I think it needs something more coldplay like uptempo rock. The title track is quite good for those who haven't heard the deluxe edition.

Does anybody else get the feeling that Coldplay are about to release another album in early 2015? Such little promotion by the band for Ghost Stories, only 8 tour dates with nothing at all on the horizon. This coming from a band that tours like U2, always massive, always stretching across the globe for months and months. I know the band always spoke about doing a smaller, simple album. Perhaps this was it and another bigger effort is right behind it. They did record many many songs not featured on Ghost Stories. Just a theory....

Nah I think it's down to the Divorce and the fact they do tour after tour with every album and they rather spend time with their families, they are now in a position that the albums will sell if they don't tour or not (it topped nearly every country in the world, which every album since ROBTHH has done). I personally think Ghost Stories is their smaller, simple album apart from SFOS. Expect a massive tour next album around.

Wasn't a big Coldplay fan around 5-6 years ago, always liked them but not as much as I do now..I'd probably put them in my top 10.
This album is nothing special imo but it has a few good songs and its pretty relaxing..something Oasis never had

Although O is one of the greatest songs they ever done.
