Just thought I start on the band who started the new Rock revolution in the early 2000's along with The White Stripes, Is this It was a breath of fresh air when it arrived back in 2001 after the Nu rap metal and Rap scene was at it's highest point. It made people start bands (the Killers, Arctic Monkeys, The Libertines) and helped a few New York acts get noticed (Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Interpol), But unlike The White Stripes, they never made a album after that touched their debut unlike the Stripes who followed White Blood cells with the even better Elephant also they never reached the commercial heights of The Killer's or Monkey's on a World wide stage.
Room of Fire has got better with age for me. First Impressions of Earth has a few great songs but is full of filler. Angles is the same as Earth has potential but filler wins out. I thought Comedown Machine was a slight return to form but they didn't tour behind it or really promote it.
So what do you think of the Strokes? think they are still a great band, do you feel they still released great albums after their debut or do you think they are a one album wonder.

Room on fire for me was their last truly great album, couldn't get into 1st impressions of Earth really but You only Live Once is probably one of their best singles. Yeah they've gotten better as a live act I got to admit saw them during the 2006 tour and at Oxygen festival in Ireland. They were very good.

The Strokes are currently a band in name only.

The White Stripes did get better over time and Elephant is my favorite album of theirs but nothing compares to Is This It. Can still listen to it front to back and enjoy it as much as I did when it first came out. Wish I got to see them live during the Room on Fire tour. One of two bands on my bucket list that I've never seen live.

It was good, not great. I seem to remember the crowd being extremely young. Like early teenagers and shit.

I thought they got a whole lot better during the later years. Is this it is still a cracking album, as is Room on Fire which many look down upon.

The Strokes are currently a band in name only. You are right, I think whenever Julian feels in the mood to do something then the others have to be ready. Although didn't the band start writing songs for the last two albums, I could be wrong. But I just don't think Julian's heart is in it really.

One of my favourite bands. There is not a bad tune on Is This It, Room on Fire is sensational, too. I have never understood what people dislike about ROF, the lyrics for me are, at times, a little bit forced but that is my only issue. I was so excited for Angles but was a bit let down with it. Then I read this thread, listened to it again and realised it's a good album haha.
Underrated band, IMO. Little bit like Oasis - their first album was QUALITY but nothing really matched it so people lazily presume they are shit. Far from it.

I've always wanted to hear the sessions they did with Nigel Godrich.

But to be honest Oasis did go a little downhill after Be Here Now, Not a popular thing to say on a Oasis forum ( I wouldn't be on this site if I didn't like Oasis but I'm not blind to their faults like many are on here). Their first three albums are Amazing to very good, Everything after is leave it or take it really for me, far too much plodding not enough greatness.
Anyway Room on Fire is a awesome album maybe they could have shaken it up a little but it's a great album. After that like Oasis after Be Here Now, far too much filler with the odd great track to remind you why you loved them in the first place. Angles has it's moments as does First impressions (their worst album) and Comedown Machine (a slight return to form). But That debut album is their stand alone masterpiece.

Is This It was an album that had an Oasis-like effect on me. The songs were incredible, the performances were incredible and above all...they just made it seem to easy. It was actually this album that made me feel I could learn guitar, and I did.
I always wanted to play since the first time I heard Wonderwall back in 95 but I never thought it was something I could do. Especially as the songs got bigger like Champagne Supernova and AATW.
Angles is alright, had some great tracks and some just decent album tracks. I actually enjoyed the 80s feel of the album.
Still not quite sure what to make of Comedown Machine.

Room On Fire is extremely underrated in my opinion. Very fine album and those tunes get stuck in your brain for days on end. What helped kill The Strokes as a band was the follow up album (First Impressions of Earth) and the massive layoff between albums right after. The Indie world was changing swift during this era. Bands like Interpol, Flaming Lips, Wilco, Arcade Fire, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and The White Stripes were really elevating their games. Sadly The Strokes did not. People moved on. Other bands got much much better. Like Neil Young likes to say, "Be great or be gone."

Absolutley loved Is This It? I was 15 when the album came out and 16 when I saw them headline Leeds in 2002. I was just too young to appreciate Oasis at their peak therefore the Strokes really felt like the first band of 'my generation'.
I was so hyped for ROF and when it was released I thought it was great but the novelty soon wore off. It was basically Is This It MK II but the songs were slightly weaker therefore if I was in a Strokes mood I'd never select it over Is This It?
I brought the 3rd album and really didn't like it (in fact gave it to a girl I was dating at the time) after that I gave up with them and haven't really heard anything since 2006.
Shame as I loved them for about 18 months/2 years

I think I'm more interested in a Julian solo album over another Strokes LP.

Shame as I loved them for about 18 months/2 years I thought ROF was their last truly great album, yeah it's a carbon copy probably better produced then Is this It? but I think it's underrated in the larger scheme of things. Reptilla (still their greatest song for me), Meet me in The Bathroom, Under Control and What ever Happened? are some of their best material.
Yeah nothing after ROF really never reached the peaks of their first two albums, they had a few moments of greatness but they will be forever known for their debut.

Yeah I have to agree that Reptilia is their best song along with Hard to Explain for me but I honestly can't remember any of those others. I remember they had a song which sounded like Barry Manilow, was that on ROF or FIOE?

I prefer 'First Impressions[... ]' over 'Is This It'. 'Is this it' is truly the masterpiece it's held for. But after 'Room on Fire', which has besides 'Reptilia' (one of the best songs ever) and 'What Ever Happened' hardly any memorable moments on it, Julian Casablanca's songwriting became creative again and reached its climax. Every Song on 'First Impressions [... ] is as strong and creative as the other. I supose, during 'Room On Fire' everybody was still riding the thrill wave. I got into the 'Strokes' way after the hype.

Am I the only one who prefers the EP version of "The Modern Age" over the album one? I like it fast.

Is This It? Is a classic. Room on Fire is a great album. It is better than good in my opinion. No bad songs on there.
If you are talking about best songs in the Strokes catalog then Room on Fire as at least 3 sure fire ones on it with: Reptilia, 12:51, and Under Control which is my personal favorite off of it.
What Ever Happened?, Meet Me In The Bathroom and The End Has No End are also great songs.
Under Cover of Darkness is the last truly classic Strokes song. That one is corker for sure. It might not be as naturally great as their early material but it is a moment in which they captured what was special about them in the first place.

I know its not a popular track but the Way It Is is one of my favourite Strokes songs.
Someday is another, probably my #1 from them.
I'd have to think more about a more full list though. That's a serious question.
