ASLAN! Irish band potentially could have been bigger than u2.. Didnt they get caught up in the rockstar game! Drugs ended it for them. Some amazing songs, crazy world, lucy jones part 2, fall on me, hurt some times.. pretty thing! Amazing timeless band..

The Killers - Hot Fuss was a stellar debut, every track on there is a winner. Sam's Town, although more ambitious and eccentric, doesn't quite match up. Day & Age did nothing for me, not a good direction for them to have gone down. Battle Born was a little uninspired, although had a few strong tunes thrown in. And now we have a Greatest Hits album from them amid talks of calling it a day.
Kasabian - Energetic, punchy debut followed up by nothing of real substance. I read in the NME recently that their forthcoming effort will discuss the horsemeat scandal, need I say any more?

The killers are quite shit imo, kasabian have a few good tracks but never really lived up to their potential

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club?? Wrong, Howl is their best album a modern classic and the only album of theirs i often listen to.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club?? Definitely. Their first album is outstanding and their second is really good, but none of the other albums live up to them. Baby 81 and Howl were good, but patchy. Wasn't really a big fan of Beat the Devil's Tattoo or Specter at the Feast, though both had a few great songs on them.

The Vines. I love their first two albums. Ah that Second album was complete rubbish, Vision Valley now that was a fine album. Nothing will ever top Highly Evolved really. Tracks like Mary Jane , Factory, Outtaway, Sunshinin, Homesick (that ending is wonderful) and In the Jungle. It's such a great Sunny Day and a few beers type of album.
Razorlight, didn't think the second album was that bad but another lead singer that got the "Bono" vibe sadly and had a inflated ego. Their Debut album was very good nothing out of this world but the fall was major seen as the press had them as the second coming.
MGMT, a band that sadly after their first didn't play to their strengths. They are a pop indie act but think they are a serious lost shoegaze/Prog Rock band. They should be doing what Empire Of The Sun are doing really.
Oasis, First Three albums and The B-sides from that period are great after that it got bad but they did pull out the odd gem.
Kings of Leon, Their first two albums are top quality indie Rock, the Third album still had a top quality feel but you could see the MOR Rock and U2 influences coming through from the 4th album onwards They lost all the swagger and became average, although that said their newer albums are probably their biggest sellers and are the ones that broke them in their home country.

The Rapture and Trail of The Dead. The Rapture, Good Call Lennon. That blistering debut Echoes produced by James Murphy was a top album and still fresh today as it was back then but They took a while to release a follow up and they lost their way, the last few albums had moments but nothing that stands out.
Klaxons wasn't totally blown away by the debut but it did win a few awards and they teamed up with Madonna at the Brits but that second album flopped hard and was awful.
The Strokes, First two albums I still think are excellent after that apart from the odd few tracks it's been disappointed.
Franz Ferdinand, That self titled debut is still in my top 20 albums of all time, it was a breath of fresh air in the British music scene more so then the overrated Libertines, But that 2nd album was so patchy, The Third wasn't better and the Fourth was fine plus they took so damn long releasing albums that they lost their charm.

The Streets, First two albums are perfection still think that debut is one of the best albums of the past 20 years. From that third album onwards it didn't get bad but just boring really which was disappointing.
The Cardigans, That 2nd album Life is pop perfection, if they were British I would consider it one of the best Britpop albums of that period.
The Hives, loved that second album but after that lacked punch for me.

catherine wheel. i would put 'ferment' amongst the greatest albums of all-time, almost every song on there is a catchy as f*ck, not one weak track on there. and the wall of guitars! but after that, in my opinion the remainder of their material is just so god damn mediocre, the mind boggles what happened. whaaa??? i think "Chrome" is a significantly better album than "Ferment" and i think VERY HIGHLY of "Ferment" actually. and to those of you berating Ride-----Ride were amazing. I enjoy 3 of their albums immensely (Nowhere, GBA, and Carnival of Light). The final album Tarantula was a disaster though....mainly because they were fighting quite a lot.....but even then, it was still a decent album for what it was. I was into Ride long before i ever heard Oasis.

Little late to the party - good thread though! The Fratellis, fuck even knows what happened to them tbh. I love the Fratellis, can't deny each album was worse than the one before though. Their debut is perfect, now they're just solid. First thing that came into my head when I saw the title - the Kooks. Their debut was amazing, great sound, great melodies, some of the best songs of the decade IMO. Second album was OK with some standout songs, third was mediocre and what they're doing now...complete and utter shame.

That's what Kurt Cobain sacrificed himself for, to not being on that list. No, that was awful what i've just said. It's just reminded me of him saying something like that in his letter. He said people expecting him to do something as big as Nevermind but he knows he'll never get any better than this.
But i'm sure he could've done even better. The guy had to be in some really deep mental shithole. He should have just wait one more year to hear Oasis and get better in a second. It's a shame, and what an incredible piece of music what he wrote, pure genius and class. You can hear Beatles influences all over it. I bet there would be no Supersonic if there was no Nevermind before.
I know Dave Grohl is now regarded to be a fuckin father of rock n roll, but really nothing he had done with Foo Fighters comes close to what Cobain was doing with these 3 powerchords. One interesting thing that someone said to me once. "You see jazz musicians play Nirvana songs. They don' play Pearl Jam or Soundgarden, it means something "

A million times this. Their first two albums are pretty good. After Cease to Begin, which is my favorite by them they just went downhill fast. Their past two albums have been horrible. They'll always have Detlef Schrempf which is one of the most beautiful songs.. Sometimes the singer gets on my nerves though. I absolutely love the band but Television never made anything better than Marquee Moon. It is one of the best rock n' roll records ever in my opinion. There's no shame in not making a better album than that, because many artists don't create something that good in the first place. Their second album Adventure is by no means a bad album, in fact I enjoy it a great deal, as well as their other work but they never bettered Marquee Moon. Doesn't mean they became shit like Band Of Horses or some other bands mentioned on here but they did peak early.

Magazine's Real Life was great, they still released good albums, but not as good as their debut in my opinion.
Surprisingly though, their first album for over 30 years from a few years back was very good I thought.
