First off, this thread is inspired by one off of reddit.
Does anybody here have any bands they like or know of that started off fantastic and then each album was only worse than the next? Or possibly didn't meet the standard of their debut?
For me, those bands are:
Ride: Although Going Blank Again is fantastic, Nowhere is their best, and so they ultimately fall in this criteria. Oasis: Definitely Maybe is their best IMHO, and I would almost rate their albums in chronological order.(I dislike most of DOYS) Stone Roses: Self-explanatory Misfits: Earth AD rules, but Walk Among Us I think is better. Not even factoring in post Danzig. Iron Maiden: This will be controversial, but my favorite two albums are Iron Maiden and Killers. This one is solely a preference for Paul di'Anno over Bruce Dickinson. The quality of albums until Fear of the Dark doesn't really decline. Lush: Stick to shoegaze (ladykillers is pretty catchy though). Coldplay: I love Parachutes, and I don't like any of their other albums quite as much. Avril Lavigne: Kind of weird to include here, but I really liked her first album as a kid. I almost felt betrayed when Girlfriend came out.

What a shame.

Slayer-Granted Hell Awaits and Reign in Blood are my two favourites, but Kerry King is a douche not having Lombardo Putrid Pile-One man dooes not mean 1000% brutal Filter- They may be known for who their frontman's brother is (yep him) but theymake me wabnt to tear my ears off

Kings of Leon............I use to love these guys. Their first two albums were brilliant. Good, hard southern rock. Once the "Sex On Fire" album came out it was all down hill. The tunes got more generic, the lyrics boring. I miss the band from 2003.

Ride: I could not care less untill Andy joined Oasis, average at best... not that i would care afterwards Oasis : U can' t compare all Noel albums with albums when he left some space for others, otherwise, DM might be equal to WTSMG Coldplay : Had couple of good tunes but massively overrated and the last albums are shite Stone Roses : With two albums it is difficult to say if you' re going downhill or uphill ...and are overrated But overall I believe it is normal (like in football some say second season in higher league is tougher than the first one). If there are not expectations it' s much easier to produce decent piece of music

I'll only count bands who have made good albums to start off with, not bad albums that have become even worse. Difficult with Oasis, I prefer Definitely Maybe, but many tunes off Morning Glory and the b-sides that followed from that album show a band at the top of their game.
Don't agree about Coldplay, thought a Rush of Blood was much better and Viva La Vida as an album is right up there with Parachutes, though their last album was poor I thought, so it's pretty erratic.
Ride - great first album, nothing to offer after that.
Kasabian - a good first album, rest of their stuff doesn't compare - they became twats and everything was shit after that. Pretty much a parody of themselves now, they are an embarrasment.
The Strokes - pretty much well documented.
Franz Ferdinand - harsh one to include here, I love them and I love their latest album, but nothing has quite topped that amazing debut.

smashing pumpkins after Mellon Collie bush after sixteen stone album Adore was the Pumpkins true masterpiece. By far their best produced album and lyrics. I can't wait for the special edition version coming out soon.

Boo on all you people who included the Strokes, boo! But I guess I should have known that was coming.
Also, in response to Matt, I think Going Blank Again has a lot to offer. I think it's truly a unique record that's hard to classify. What couldn't you like about shoegaze + Teenage Fanclub?
Some artists I forgot:
Dinosaur Jr: You're living all over me is their best imo, although Bug does come close. Syd Barrett: TPATGOD is in my top ten, and his solo albums are great, but they don't meet Piper. Weezer: Pinkerton is my favorite album of all time, which only makes listening to their latter catalogue hurt even more. Liz Phair: Exile in Guyville is hard to beat Television: Marquee Moon is easily one of the best albums in that time period, and they just kinda stopped. Velvet Underground: One of the best, if not the best, debut albums ever. The successors are great too, but don't meet their debut.

Not a band, but... Alanis Morissette. Excluding her teen pop years, Jagged Little Pill was fantastic and everything else went downhill from there (except maybe her MTV Unplugged)

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! These guys completely fell off after a brilliant debut. One of my favorite albums from 2005/2006. They were pretty good live too.

Coldplay Killers The Editors (Still decent but I rate their albums chronologically)
They're the only bands I can think of who have released more than 2 full studio albums

The Killers- Loved hot fuss, sam's town was pretty good, day and age decent enough but after that shit. They've never topped Hot Fuss or even come close
I'd disagree with Velvet Underground. Yeah their first is my favorite, but honestly you could ask 4 people what their favorite VU album is and you'd get 4 different answers.
The Strokes: First two are the only albums you need. Couple good tracks littered throughout the rest of their records
MGMT: Debut is pretty great all the way through. 2nd one has a couple jams. 3rd one ehhhhh
Metric: They've never topped the sleek, smart Grow Up and Blow Away
Led Zep: This is more of a general thing than an album thing. First 4 records I like a whole lot. (first 2 I love) but their later career is a bit bloated.
Kasabian: first album is enjoyable, the rest are just meh with probably 1-3 tracks that I like

would disagree with Ride and the Strokes, I like Going Blank Again and Room on Fire just as much if not more than the debuts.
Would agree with tvu. however, they started so high that it still means they are all good albums, but nothing did match tvu + nico.
I'd add bloc party and interpol, promising first albums and nothing much afterwards
