I'm surprised by Gem. He wrote 3 beautiful acoustic songs, Second Bite that does nothing to me and Iz Rite that's good. Great work.

Back After The Break and Off At The Next Exit = GEM ARCHER Girls In Uniform = ANDY BELL just confirmed by Lou Archer. Fuck's sake. I feel bad for Gem. He gets saddled with the shit reputation of being the worst songwriter of the three and he gets two great songs banished to the deluxe edition. Well done, Mr. Archer.

I was busy and away for a while from this board, then purposely stayed away from this board because I just knew I'd start reading all the discussions before getting my copy and possibly getting influenced lol. Now that I've bought the album (deluxe edition) and listened to it several times on my own, I think it's great. I really think the bonus tracks should have been on the regular album, since I think they're actually stronger than a few of the actual album songs! FOTF is a great opener for me. I thought maybe I'd get sick of it eventually, but no. The brass section still sounds amazing to me, and I like the overall structure. It's energetic, and Liam sounds great. I think FOTF leads nicely into Soul Love, which I really like. It's one of the top songs on the album for me. Then, unfortunately, Face the Crowd and SBOTA come next. Face the Crowd is okay, but I don't think it's as strong. And SBOTA sounded better acoustically when Liam performed it on OuiFM. I still can't say I'm a fan of SBOTA on the album. I don't think any of the songs are terrible, but by comparison to songs like FOTF and Soul Love, Face the Crowd and SBOTA are weak. There were some real surprises on here for me. Start Anew is a beautiful song. I liked it acoustically but thought it was a bit repetitive towards the end, but didn't feel that way at all with the album version. Soon Come Tomorrow is another song that didn't immediately stand out, but after each listen, got better and better. Don't Brother Me was another surprise, in a good and a bad way. I don't think the lyrics work--there are some good cheeky moments, but it's the lyrical arrangement and maybe also the way they're sung (the rhythm seems a bit off), that just doesn't quite hang together. However, it actually has some of my favourite instrumentation and melody on the album, so I'm torn. I love the outro...but it's a bit too long. This song confuses me and I'm still not sure what to make of it. As for the bonus tracks, I actually love all of them. I'm glad they're on the deluxe edition. BE is definitely better than DGSS for me--far more interesting and varied in the melodies and singing. Some of the lyrics still make me cringe a bit, but overall I think this is a great album.

My review for my blog - themasterplanblog.com/?p=610Don't be put off by my score, I still think BE is a "good" album I just think it lacks that start to finish wow factor that would elevate it into 3/4/5 star territory. I figured half the songs are really good and ill still listen to in a year - half are quite bad and I won't listen to again.

I think the highpoint of the album is track 5-7 but no songs are really weak (except DOSS then...). Thumbs up!

Right... I have to update my thoughts on the album. It's a belter.. not many albums have something for everyone, this definitely does. Hence the huge difference on peoples favourites and dislikes. It's varied in styles and without any duff track imo. I scored it a 7/10, it's 8 at least. I just wish Gem's two bonus tracks could have been squeezed in instead of one or two others. It would have upped the quality (especially lyrically), they're too strong to leave off imo and I like the idea of 'Off At The Exit' being a break up song followed by 'Start Anew' being about giving it another go. Beautiful stuff!!

I waited for the commercial release so I've been listening to the album for nearly a week.
Have to say I'm impressed. It's got under my skin and a number of songs are really really good.
Far more depth and quality than dgss as I think most would agree.
I think the effort and passion of Liam andy and Gem comes across which I respect. They've clearly invested a lot of emotion and effort into the album.
Each day a different song is stuck in my head. Today don't brother me, yesterday I'm Just Sayin. Also loving off at the next exit, soul love, ballroom figured and back after the break.
Great stuff, well done to the band. Lets hope the tour goes well and word of mouth gives the album some longevity.
Some small moments on the album are great for me, like the repeated first two lines in the outro to ballroom figured and the "come into my world" on Soul Love. And the "fear...near...fade away" on off at the next exit. Beautiful!

‘Lay Off My Avocado Baby’ by Beady Eye The second album from Beady Eye, BE, also turns out to be the second coming of Archer, Bell and Gallagher.
The album starts with Flick Of The Finger. A brass-heavy tune which lives up to expectations as the album opener. It gets you off your seat and without you even noticing, gets you nodding your head in appreciation. It is heavy, muddy, flame resistant song which has Gallagher screaming in your face, ‘IT’S ON!’ As a Beady Eye fan, you can ask for no more. Also it is a monster live as we witnessed on Jools Holland. Soul Love. When I saw the song title I assumed it would be Four Letter Word (mark 2), how wrong was I? I thought it was great live at Jools Holland and Abbey Road, but the album version has so many different layers and you can see how much Sitek changed the balance of play on this song. He sprinkled his magic with this tune. The gun shot at 1.24 and the whispers around 1.17 enhance the tune big style. Also check out the instrumental version of the song as you can hear the whispers more clearly. It is a dark, romantic, eerie, windswept tune, which really does make you listen. I would love to see what the band would come up with for a music video for this song.
Face The Crowd has taken a bit of stick on this forum as one of the weakest songs on the album, but I think it is a necessary song. The guitars and drums are there and right in your face. I would say this may be the tune which Sharrock had most fun with on the album. 1.30 onwards, with the claps and tambourine adds to the song, and then comes the funky, summery guitar solos which were missing on Different Gear Still Speeding. When the song is played live I think that is when it will show its real magic, similar in a sense to Wigwam.
Second Bite Of The Apple has a ridiculous song title, but a song title which catches the eye. The inclusion of brass once again is a welcoming factor. When you read the song lyrics you can see how repetitive the song actually is. But when Gallagher is singing ‘Come on, show what you love now’, I find myself sitting up and listening to what he has to say. Possibly not the best choice for a first single but with its funny lyrics, ‘tickle my feet with the NME’, it is sure to catch a few new listeners, which is no bad thing. Soon Come Tomorrow. The start scares me with its eerie noises which remind me of an abandoned theme park with the empty roller coasters etc. Another fairly strange song title but this is a great tune. Gallagher’s vocal are dry, but it works perfectly. What kind of love burns holes in your heart? What a great lyric. Bell sometimes comes up with the most beautiful lyrics. A softly spoken man in comparison to Gallagher but a man who seemingly has a lot to say within this song, ‘while we were sleeping the dark turned to dawn.’ Smoke It. Don’t drop it. And hit repeat. Iz Rite. I don’t like this song, I am in the minority. It is like the strange third cousin to The Roller. It is a summer tune and I know I would enjoy it with a few beers, but it seems to sit out after Soon Come Tomorrow. Maybe the placement of the song on the album is the reason for my dislike, but it just seems very ‘Beatlesy’ to me. A very upbeat song which the band members even mentioned themselves, Sitek tried to work his magic on this song but it just did not fit the song.
I’m Just Saying. When I read on this forum that some of the lyrics included ‘1,2,3....7,8,9’, I shuddered in fear of what I was going to put my ears through. Upon hearing the song, I love the song, I love the 1,2,3...7,8,9 part and I love absolutely everything about this song. It just works. And Gallagher seems to have grabbed himself a pair of panties.
Don’t Brother Me. The song title which was going to be brought up in every single interview the band will undertake. A mellow song with some harsh and biting lyrics for Gallagher’s two brothers. Some have compared it to Little James, but I feel that is very harsh and I actually quite enjoy the honesty of Gallagher’s lyrics. The four minute outro may not exactly be needed but I am not complaining.
Shine A Light. The beginning, the middle and the end are all fantastic. The beginning is like you riding into a sunset on the back of a camel in a desert. The strings and the piano all have a very ‘film noire’ feel to them but then the song kicks in. I would classify this as another summer tune which you have got to turn up loud. I must say I am not a fan of lyrics at the end, basically rhyming anything with crystallise. 2.30 when the strings and piano come back in is a fantastic moment in the album, which is when I realised how different this album was going to be compared to DGSS.
Ballroom Figured. Another strange song title which gave nothing away about the song. I am glad they kept it to just acoustic guitar and Gallagher’s raw vocal. When I listened to the song and heard Archer was behind the lyrics I briefly wondered what or who the tune was about, and still I don’t know. Along with Back After The Break and Off At The Next Exit, I feel that Archer has found the type of songs he should be chasing. Ballroom is a buskers dream song, with its softly spoken guitar and beautiful lyrics.
Start Anew. Heard the song on Oui Fm and Abbey Road and was wildly impressed and I could not wait for the album version. It blew my socks off. I then put my socks on again and once again it blew them off. I loved Gallagher’s ‘I’m Outta Time’, a song which I believe is Oasis’ best song, and this song is just as poetic. Gallagher really does put a lot of love into this one. When the drums thump in and almost swing a right hook for your jaw, you need to readjust briefly and regain your bearings. Then the ‘Yeah Yeah Yeah’ comes in and you finally realise that the album has taken to the top of a mountain and you do in fact have the ‘whole world in your hands!’

I don't really have the time to do a full track review, but here are a couple thoughts.
-Best moment on the album is the wah solo on Soon Comes Tomorrow -I'm Just Saying rocks hard, it'll be great live. Best track. They NEED to do more balls out rock. The acoustic numbers are sweet, but they're weak. -Second Bite of the Apple's chorus is probably the strongest. Could totally see why they choose it as a single. -The songwriting is STILL average, I guess the good news is there is nothing as bad as Beatles and Stones on here. -Production is good, nice additions to the songs, but I wish Dave pushed them harder. Don't Bother Me's atmosphere is superb. -It's even close to being an "out there" album -On a couple tracks and a couple moments Liams voice sounds dreadful.
Its a patchy album for sure. Not one that I'll listen to all the way through, say in a couple of months, but a couple tracks are worth my time. Its better than DGSS, but not by a whole lot, which is disappointing because I had faith that they could pull out a good one (7/10) instead they improved slightly 5.5/10.
Love the guys and I'll see them live, if they come close to me, but I just don't have time to listen to just "Okay" music when there's the internet and an near endless amount of good music to discover.

After having a few more listens, BE is miles better in every way than DGSS. Song consistency, producing, sounding. I'd still rate it at 7/10 but that's down to the guys not being A-class songwriters. (now I'd rate DGSS a 5.5, max. 6) Flick Of The Finger - It has BALLS and a massive sound, one of the best tracks for me. Production is excellent, 8/10 Soul Love - I didn't know dark and moody fit Liam that well. It does though. I get a BRMC vibe and BRMC acoustics are great, so I'm not complaining. Sitek has done great things, too with this song. Another 8/10 Face The Crowd - I really like the guitar and the drums, but the melody puts me off. On the other hand, I can easily imagine that live they'll turn it into an in-your-face monster. 6/10 Second Bite Of The Apple - It's still a bit weird to me. I'm not keen on the verses, but I like the chorus and especially the "show what you love now" line. 6/10 Soon Come Tomorrow - So far it's my personal favourite. It's well-structured, both the playing (the lead guitar work is amazing) and the production is quality, a lot of small things going on in this. The chorus just stuck in my head and the build-up to that is my favourite part on the whole album. 8/10 Iz Rite - That's the only track I got the "Beatles lite" (or 60s lite) vibe , which was (to me) all over DGSS. Feelgood, but average. 5/10 I'm Just Saying - That IS more than average, catchy and poppy, good vocals, good guitar and I like the counting at the end Maybe this has the makings of a hit? 8/10 Don't Brother Me - Not sure about all the lyrics, probably I'm not the only one with that... I like the melody though. The ending is a bit pointless (on Soul Love I felt a point in the long outro, here not). 6/10 Shine A Light - I like Bo Diddley rhythm. But there are other songs in that rhythm which are much better. Probably my least favourite, 5/10. Ballroom Figured - I would have picked Off At The Next Exit if I had to choose a Gem-written acoustic, but this is nice too. 6/10 but close to a 7. Start Anew - I don't think it's THAT good but it has a good melody and the album version is much better than the acoustic live ones. 7/10 and I feel something little is missing from being a massive song. Bonus tracks: Dreaming Of Some Space - it's there and fits. Nothing more about it. World's Not Set In Stone - I agree with this being left off the album because it wouldn't really fit, otherwise it's a good song which could've pushed out half the DGSS songs from that album. 7/10 Back After The Break - For some reason the whole mood and the song reminded me of Travis (which is good in my book as I really like them). Maybe the vibe is like The Fear? 6/10 Off At The Next Exit - That's up with my favourites. The only reason I can think of being left off from the album is that it's a definite closer and they had it with Start Anew. Beautiful vocal by Liam, the whole song sounds desolate and forlorn (I find it to be quite close in mood to Soon Come Tomorrow). Funnily enough I can picture Axl Rose singing this quite well ) 8/10

I'm not sure if I listened to the same album as everyone else did. There are a few ok songs on here. This is nothing great. There isn't isn't even 1 track that sticks out as being great. DGSS is much better IMO. Four Letter Word, The Roller, Wigwam, Beat Goes On are better than every song on BE. But, I'm glad you all like it. I know the band took a different approach and reached out beyond their usual zones. Hopefully this will grow on me.
DGSS = 5/10 BE = 2/10 NGHFB = 6/10

Flick of the Finger - 8.5/10 grown on me more than any other Beady Eye song. Soul Love - 7/10 really enjoy it, perfect song to follow flick of the finger Face the Crowd - 6.5/10 didn't really like it at first but it's growing on me. Simple stomping song but I think it will come over better live. Second Bite of the Apple - 8/10 Always enjoyed it and as is the theme with the album it gets better the more you listen. Lyrics are simple but for me fit the tune. Soon Comes Tomorrow - 8.5/10 really cool and enjoyable song. Love the vibe it gives off and the vocal from Liam. One of the highlights of the album. Iz Right - 7.5/10 Beatles vibe and a lovely summer tune, could be a single. I'm Just Saying - 8/10 love it. Was worried when Andy said it was Morning Glory Oasis but I needn't have. Great tune, great vocal very good song. Could be a single. Don't Brother Me - 7/10 simple but biting lyrics and a decent enough song until the ending. The last four minutes take the song to another level for me. The song has got stuck in my head the most. Shine a Light - 8/10 The Meaning of Souls big brother really enjoy it, very good intro and when the song kicks in my foot starts tapping. Can't wait to hear it live. Ballroom Figured - 8/10 simple but beautiful. Love Liam's voice on songs like this. Start Anew - 9/10 just a great, great song. Everything I wanted Stop The Clocks to be. Love the vocal and when the drums kick in this song goes up a level. Should be a single and should be a monster live. Dreaming of Some Space 6/10 nice idea but not really my thing. Worlds Not Set In Stone - 7.5/10 loved the live version and really enjoy it as a bonus track. Back After The Break - 8/10 another simple but great song. Would love it to have been played during the recent acoustic gigs. Off at the Next Exit 8.5/10 great song, great vocal and should have made the album. Stunningly good as a bonus track! Girls in Uniform - 5.5/10 not really keen on this tune. If anything the main song annoys me. However I do like the last few minutes. Evil Eye - 8/10 no idea how this song has been left of the last two albums! Very good song I would have loved them to have found space on the album for it. It's unlikely but I would love to hear this live.

The album has really grown on me now. It's much better than the last couple of Oasis album's. Had Oasis still been together and managed another album with the best of Beady Eye and HFB, we would have had another album on our hands to rival their heyday stuff (94 - 97).

The album in its wonderful japanese version, with 17 tracks, still deserves a 9/10 for me ! Really really lovin' it, from Flick of the finger (big big tune) to the great Evil eye. I totally agree with GlastoEls: BE is my favorite Gallagher record in a decade, along with NGHFB.

Wrote a review for my blog, thought I could post it here as well: After listening to Beady Eye’s second album BE for a week, we can conclude that the guys have done a really good job this time. BE is a solid record with very few weak tracks. New producer Dave Sitek has done a great job and it sounds much better than Different Gear, Still Speeding. A real 10/10 track is lacking, though – but there are lots of 8s and 9s on this album. Also among the bonus tracks, released on the “Deluxe Edition”: BEADY EYE – BE 1. Flick Of The FingerWritten by Liam, Gem and Andy Typical Oasis opening number – but this one comes without a chorus. That’s not a problem. Brass arrangements dominate the scene. It’s very good, but the choice to include a spoken Jean-Paul Marat quote in the end is bizarre. It’s cringeworthy, but that’s the only flaw of this slap-in-the-face track. 9/10 2. Soul LoveWritten by Liam It’s not an instant Sitek works this ballad to heights it would not have reached otherwise. The long psychedelic outro is really cool. 8/10 3. Face The CrowdWritten by Andy The big brother of Beatles & Stones from the last album. A typical The Who-inspired Liam rocker – but this one’s actually (unexpectedly) written by Andy. And perhaps that is why it works a lot better than Standing On The Edge Of The Noise and Ain’t Got Nothin’. Chris Sharrock does a good job here. And so does Sitek. 7/10 4. Second Bite Of The AppleWritten by Gem The single is one of the weaker tracks on the album, but I think that it’s been criticised too harshly. Sure, the lyrics are a bit childish. But there’s lots of attitude from Liam and, once again, the brass section does it very well – just as Sharrock. 7/10 5. Soon Come TomorrowWritten by Andy Could’ve been a track from Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants. A moody Gas Panic-like ballad. Very clean sound. And a very good song. 8/10 6. Iz RiteWritten by Gem Beady Eye goes ABBA. Pop tune that works really well. More retro sound than any other song outside of the bonus tracks. The chorus is ringing around your brain. 9/10 7. I’m Just SayingWritten by Andy This rocker is the biggest surprise of the album. It has a pure vintage Oasis sound and could have been a Be Here Now b-side. One of the best lyrics on BE. Nice guitar solo towards the end. 9/10 8. Don’t Brother MeWritten by Liam Liam’s How Do You Sleep (Lennon’s attack on McCartney). As the title suggests, this ballad is about Noel, but it’s not as vicious as How Do You Sleep (or Ian Brown’s post-Stone Roses attacks on John Squire). After all, Liam and Noel are brothers. Liam is even asking Noel to “give peace a chance”. The lyrics have been criticized but I think they are alright. Unfortunately, it is a quite boring song and the psychedelic sitar outro is cool but too long (four minutes). 6/10 9. Shine A LightWritten by Liam There are lots of things going on on this one. A gangster film piano intro, ethnic drums, electronics from Sitek and really bad rhymes. Could’ve been a Kasabian song. One of the more outlandish tracks on the album, and it’s probably not a very good song in itself but with Sharrock’s drumming and Sitek’s production it works fine. 8/10 10. Ballroom FiguredWritten by Gem Pure acoustic number. Sounds like a ballad off Heavy Stereo’s album. It’s nice. Not the best lyrics though (some people change, move out of range). 7/10 11. Start AnewWritten by Liam Let There Be Love version 2. Nice-guy-Liam using his soft “home voice” in a McCartney-style ballad that is a really good album closer. It feels like it’s a bit too short, though. 8/10 DELUXE EDITION BONUS TRACKS 12. Dreaming Of Some SpaceWritten by Liam Two minutes of Liam repeating a few lines over a backwards version of Start Anew. Psychedelic. Nothing special. 5/10 13. The World’s Not Set In StoneWritten by Liam This one was played live towards the end of the Different Gear, Still Speeding tour and the sound is very remniscent of that album. Retro. George Harrison sound. Quite nice. 7/10 14. Back After The BreakWritten by Gem The two last tracks are two brilliant rainy-day Gem ballads. Why weren’t they included on the album? Very Lennon-like. 8/10 15. Off At The Next ExitWritten by Gem Another 70s Lennon ballad. Gem’s songwriting is perhaps the most positive surprise on BE. This might be the best track of the whole album. Its got the best melody and probably the best lyrics of the album as well. The stick is wonderful. 9/10 JAPAN EDITION BONUS TRACKS 16. Girls In UniformWritten by Andy Understandably this one didn’t make the album. Liam’s voice is all too nasal. Too long and forgettable. 4/10 17. Evil EyeWritten by Liam Vintage Beady Eye, if there is such a thing. Remniscent of The Beat Goes On. Nice one. 7/10 VERDICT: 8/10

Still listening to the album. Some songs are really good and some songs have their weaker moments but as others said no "Beatles and Stones". I find Liams voice on Soon Come Tomorrow hard to enjoy. Well, Evil Eye and Off At The Next Exit blew me away. Fantastic Songs. Should´ve been included on the regular version would lift BE to a strong 7/10.

It's a decent effort by Beady eye. Don't think anyone expected it to be a classic.
Flick of the finger 8/10 Probably the best tune on the album. Soul Love 7/10 I like the production on this album sitek has done well with this tune. Definitely somthing refreshing from the band Face the crowd 6/10 Second bite of the apple 7/10 Not as bad as people like to think. credit for beady eye to using a brass section on this. Soon come tomorrow 6/10 Iz rite 7/10 Don't brother me 7/10 musically its interesting but lyrics are questionable I'm just saying 6/10 Shine a light 5/10 Ballroom figured 6/10 Start Anew 6/10
overall 6.5/10

I totally agree with GlastoEls: BE is my favorite Gallagher record in a decade, along with NGHFB. I just think they're both cohesive, and really have a "vision", for want of a better word. I didn't like the later Oasis albums so much as I felt they were compromised; shoehorning in LAG with no common train of thought. Just songs of varying quality and style jammed together. Oasis worked best with the original blueprint; Noel songs, Noel arrangements, Liam singing. BE and HFB are "albums" in every sense - Noel has the classic songwriting, Beady Eye have the sense of daring and Liam's charisma - and I love them both.

Looking back a year after it's release, I'm still happy with it. Beady Eye did what I wanted them to do. Get a real producer and add much scope and musical depth to their songs. I think it towers over their debut. Lyrics still need work but the landscape of sounds is tremendous compared to DGSS. Hopefully a third LP is 2-3 years away.

I voted it 10-9 out of 10 at the time, I regret nothing.
