The suggestion that Cobain was a shit guitarist is frankly ridiculous.
His guitar work was *perfect* for the conflicting emotions he was trying to convey in his songs. He was wrestling those sounds out of it as though the guitar was an extention of his soul.

Another example of the SENSATIONALISM that gets thrown around when Nirvana or Cobain get mentioned for anything. "Wrestling"? "Extension of his soul"? Really? Okay, whatever you say.

All homosexual and therefor not eligible. So Queen mean nothing b/c Freddy Mercury batted for the other team? Most daft comment today. I didn't say that Jit, redlandsman87 did. I agree with you though absolutely daft!

I'm not a fan of Nirvana, but I don't know how one can consider Oasis to be legendary if Nirvana aren't.

Nirvana are a great band, not really my cup of tea but I can see why people dig that.
Though I think there's one American album that tops everything, and is in my opinion on a par with The Beatles best, and that is Pet Sounds.

In Utero is one of rock's' greatest albums. Yeah I gotta agree with that, it is definitely better than Nevermind to me. Songs like Rape Me, Scentless Apprentice, All Apologies, Dumb, and Heart Shaped Box are legendary.

The Boss? Born to Run is one of the all-time great albums. I'm going to say this here and now - Nebraska is miles better than anything Bob Dylan did.

It is one of my favourite albums of all time so I hold it in very high esteem, so naturally I think it's greater than most of my albums. It's like a John Steinbeck novel set to music, just fabulous. Atlantic City probably my favourite from it. I absolutely love Bruce Springsteen, and the fact he's still releasing quality records makes me feel lucky to experience it.

Pavement and The Velvet Underground two of the most influential bands ever. I don't care if you haven't heard of them or listen to them. They are superb. Their catalogs are perfect, bar VU's last album which is really just Yule fucking around without any of the band members present. Might not have sold a massive amount of records but rock n roll isn't about that. Is it?
The Replacements and The Stooges the some of the best punk bands out there.
I'm not a fan of The Boss but he is up there without a doubt.
Pixies and Nirvana are two of the biggest alternative bands out there.
The Jimi Hendrix Experience has to be on there as well.
In due time The White Stripes and The Strokes may be added to the list but I'm afraid the Strokes were a flash in the pan. 1 classic album. 1 Great album. 2 average ones. Both bands kick started how we think about Rock in the 2000's.

It's hard for me to put the Replacements at legendary status. Don't get me wrong, they're one of my 10 favorite bands of all time, and I love them to death. I think they could have been legendary, but they sort of sabotaged their own career.
Bastards of Young is one of the greatest rock anthems ever though. Same with Left of the Dial and I Will Dare.

I was going to say Dream Theter but the Canucks among you might protest, LaBrie is a Canadian Same as Talking Heads. Although David Byrne is an English, to me they're an American (and great!) band. It's not a band, but to me personally, Patti Smith is the legend of the lengeds. I adore Patti. She's a god-like.

I always enjoy hearing stories of their live performances when they would literally be piss drunk or play country songs when their punk rock fans showed up for a gig just to screw with them. Totally agree about the Strokes. Classic debut and a very very underrated sophomore effort. The last two album had some good songs (You Only Live Once springs to mind) but everything else seems uninspired. They also took too much time off between albums #3 and #4. The world it seems passed them by sadly.
