1. No band can compete with The Beatles. They're the top of the pops, greatest band ever.

What about Crosby, Stills & Nash? They're 2/3rds american. I think they were one of the biggest folk rock groups ever.

Also Supertramp, Steely Dan and Grand Funk Railroad....they were all pretty huge IMO.

A friend and I recently were trying to think of legendary American bands/musicians that rank among the best of the best, the cream of the crop. Brits have, of course, The Beatles. The Stones. The Who, Kink's, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, The La's, Oasis, Cream, The Moody Blues, The Jam/Weller, Queen, etc etc. Now, in comparison, we tried to think of US bands that either a) matched the success of The Beatles in terms of critical acclaim or b) were at least ranked fairly evenly with their contemporaries. Bands with a (mostly) "perfect" string of records or entire discographies. Bands that are UNIVERSALLY loved by all. Sure, Lyn Skyd was successful...but not a "Beatles" level band. Solo artists (such as Dylan or Elvis) we didn't count, because that's an entirely different ball park, and bands that are legendary on their own accord (CCR, Byrds) but who had their share of "crap" releases and eventual critical backlash we didn't take into consideration. Or, were ONLY successful stateside. What we could think of? Only four. The Beach Boys, The Doors, The Eagles and Metallica. Nirvana is a very close consideration, but we decided against it because he has a VERY large number of detractors and, in our opinion, his "legend" was self-orchestrated due to suicide. Van Halen was __this__ close to being listed, but since a majority of the band weren't natural born American citizens, we ruled them out, despite being a great Dutch-American Band. The Jackson 5 was also considered...but we figured this wasn't valid because the majority know the J5 as being a vehicle for MJ, not for their huge string of hits (I can count...four) or critical success. Other close contenders who didn't "quite" make the bar, who we consider "lesser" bands, despite massive success ... - Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers - Bruce Springsteen/E Street Band - The Grateful Dead - Guns N' Roses (because Axl turned them into a joke) So...that again leaves us with The Beach Boys, The Doors, The Eagles and Metallica. The four big'uns who could *seriously* compete with The Beatles. The ones who adorn thousands of t-shirts, posters, etc, the ones who are household names all around the world. If you are going to list The La's (one album) and the Moody Blues than i am sorry......Nirvana, Velvet Underground, Pavement and the Pixies make the cut.

Their horrid cover of Timeless Melody would like a word with you. That's exactly my point. I was there the night they first played that in the US (and their only time I believe) in Phoenix, Arizona. Talk about random! Did not see that one coming that night. Great fucking band.

The Moody Blues had SEVEN critically acclaimed records in a row, each with a different concept, theme and sound. Have you lot even HEARD the "Magnificent Seven"? I highly doubt it!
Steely Dan are known for ONE song. Supertramp? MAYBE two. GFR? Don't make me laugh!
The La's kicks the shit out of anything Nirvana, Pixies, or Pavement (never heard of them and I'm american) ever released. RHCP is a likely candidate, but nowhere near Beatles/Stones level. Smashing Pumpkins are shit, and again, MJ is a solo artist, so is Billy Joel, so they don't count. Beastie Boys were a niche band in a (at the time) niche genre and can't be taken seriously, in any artistic measure. Seriously? Beastie Boy vs The Beatles?
R.E.M is still, and always will be, a niche college radio band. Counting Crows? Died with the 90's.
Their cover of Timeless Melody is shit and the band has been shit, vocalist singled out especially, since their second record. Not many dispute this.
Did you all even READ the stipulations?
Think in a "battle of the bands" mentality!

I broke free long ago, been of off them for awhile. Better come up with a better criticism of me, 'cos your "off the meds" stance isn't holding ground and never did. You, though, can't even argue against at LEAST seventy percent of the disagreement I presented you with, running off, unable to credit yourself or your bands with solid facts and a logical presentation.
You lost, face it, and I'll beat you anytime.

I don't get what you want us to say then really. I mean if bands like The Allman Brothers aren't legendary enough for you, well then nothing will be.

I haven't commented on them yet because I'm still seriously debating their position, though I (most likely) will eventually agree with you on The Allman Brothers. Again, seriously meditating on them!

Nirvana, Pearl Jam, REM, Chili Peppers were at the forefront of US rock. How can you call the La' s legendary and not Velvet Underground?

I never said VU weren't Legendary. Just too niche in relation to the best of the American music scene in general. The La's have, and always will be, held in the upmost regard in Great Britain.
I'm 21. I easily discard them because I see them as a passing fad, a product of the times, none of which seriously effected the musical landscape all that deeply in terms of artistic merit.
None of them created SEVEN CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED and universally revered records like The Doors, Moody Blues, Oasis, or even more so, The Beatles and Stones.

Paul's Boutique by Beastie Boys is basically hip-hop's Abbey Road. The same could be argued for any Eminem record.

Let It Bleed, if you'd like to continue our gun debate here, we surely can. How about it? what did you say about the gun debate? that Obama was too much of a pussy and worried about his approval ratings to even entertain the idea of gun restrictions? what was the other one? about Bob Dylan liking Oasis. stop. huffing. Glue. God bless.
