Mocking is a strong word (everyone is entitled to their opinion), it's rather a little tease. And it's not about pro Oasis or pro Radiohead (I made it clear before that I love both bands) but about unobjective sentences. When I read "Radiohead have shit melodies", I wonder if it's trolling or something... You're right. I went back, read the first few pages of the thread. People were honestly saying DOYS was better than In Rainbows. Thats a fucking hoot! Never been a fan of "In Rainbows", tbh. Reckoner is better than anything from DOYS that's sure. The album is probably better than DOYS but it's far from Radiohead best imo. I'd rank them like that: Ok Computer The Bends Kid A / Amnesiac A Moon Shaped Pool Hail To The Thief In Rainbows King of Limbs Pablo Honey

One of the best records of the century versus Oasis' second best post-2000 effort....

I have tried to listen to Radiohead countless times, but I simply can't do it. Something about them doesn't sit well with me. Maybe its Thom's voice, not sure.
Anyone got a simple 8-10 tracks that I should listen to? (If you include Creep I can't take you seriously. That might make my worst 5 songs of all time.)
Because I'm not going to dive into albums without a proper vetting.

In Rainbows for me is the best median - it basically ditches the overuse of electronica and goes back to a more pure rock oriented sound with those subtle experimental time signatures/ melodic patterns and makes for a very enjoyable listenable experience.

Seriously though, if you listen to Let Down and don't like it there is no chance that Radiohead are for you
In my opinion I think it might just be the greatest song ever

Can't get into his voice at all and the instrumentation doesn't do anything for me. I suppose it's just not my thing. Could have been a much worse listen though. That said, I now better understand what every single local band was trying to sound like about a decade and a half ago... it got old after about 3 songs. Never mind hearing about 20 bands trying to do the same thing.

I'm starting to agree, to be honest. It's just so, so beautiful. Maybe I'm listening to a different song than you two. It's an alright song, but the above statement is lunacy! Let Down took ages to click with me - for ages, I considered it just an alright song too. Nice melody, nice production, nice track. That was it. Then one day I picked it out on YouTube and I suddenly realised how great it was - the ending, with the furious acoustic guitar and the angelic falsetto and heartbreaking lyrics and the layers upon layers of twinkling guitars, is one of the most powerful moments of music I've ever heard. Listening to the song recently, I've concluded it's simply a masterpiece. Everything about is perfect and powerful and emotional. I honestly don't think it's hyperbolic to consider it the greatest song ever recorded. And for me, "album bands" like Pink Floyd or Radiohead can't be properly accessed through playlists and the like. I'd just give OK Computer four or five listens on good headphones - if that doesn't at least pique your interest, they're just not for you.

I think Radiohead are ok. Generally not too keen on their pop/rock songs, nor the bands they influenced that are categorised as 'post-Britpop'. Just doesn't interest me much, which has put me off looking too much into their discography seeing as the whole albums that tend to avoid that trope such as Kid A/Amnesiac appear to be the exception rather than the rule. More interested on occasions when they go a bit more experimental. Still often derivative of stuff that had already been done by '90s ambient and trip hop artists [Not aware of any Radiohead DnB?], but they do a good job of it which slots in well alongside their influences. Oasis, very similar. Not so interested in their pop/rock stuff, DM and MG are ok-ish imo. More interested when they try out different stuff like in BHN and SOTSOG. Again, nothing massively ground-breaking, but slot in well with their influences. I'm starting to agree, to be honest. It's just so, so beautiful. Maybe I'm listening to a different song than you two. It's an alright song, but the above statement is lunacy! Agree on that one Tried Let Down several times, just reaches ok/nice for me. Even if there is some certain something I'm missing from it, "the greatest song ever" (which is a subjective statement anyway tbh) would be one that isn't beautiful and perfect, and would have to be one that completely changed my views on music, life, etc., which isn't really in Let Down's ballpark imo. Btw, I'd recommend giving Climbing Up The Walls and The National Anthem a shot as standalone tracks.

It's an okay album, I personally rate it the same as Blur's debut Leisure. Two young and obviously talented bands both trying to find their feet and carve out an identity, going somewhat down a derivative route, but containing some absolute belters while the others don't quite hit the mark. Yet there's nothing appalling on it. In general, aside from Pablo Honey, every single Radiohead album comfortably exceeds all Oasis albums from 2000 onwards.

The Bends and Ok Computer are titans in the alternative rock community. The Bends might rock harder than Definitely Maybe and Morning Glory combined. Absolutely mental guitar riffs by Jonny and Ed.

I like Oasis more, but I'd say Radiohead are a better band. Oasis followed two great albums up with a good one in BHN then lost their way for a little while, Radiohead followed their two hit albums up with their magnum opus and one of the best albums ever made. If I was to rate them like others have

Now that I think about it, although I never listen to either of them in full, I do sometimes enjoy Pablo as a five-track EP (You, Creep, Stop Whispering, Thinking About You, Blow Out). I know you could argue that The Hindu Times, Songbird, SCYHO, Little by Little, and maybe BOADC are just as good, but the truth is I just never listen to them. Also, I happened to listen to my improved tracklistings for The King of Limbs and SOTSOG today, and although I enjoyed both I definitely enjoyed Limbs more. So I'd now rank them like this: Kid A Ok Computer(What's the Story) Morning Glory? Definitely Maybe A Moon Shaped Pool In RainbowsBe Here Now Amnesiac The Bends The King of LimbsHail to the Thief
Standing on the Shoulder of Giants Dig Out Your Soul Don't Believe the Truth Pablo Honey

I'd also like to say that Codex is crushingly beautiful song. Amazing.

I'd also like to say that Codex is crushingly beautiful song. Amazing. I've never rated Born On A Different Cloud. I've always found it dreary and tedious to the extreme, plus the Lennon influence is given the full blown tribute act for that one. Little By Little and Hindu Times are standard, while Songbird and Stop Crying are the only two excellent ones I feel. The rest of the album is truly dreadful; warbling dinosaur rock for paunchy pub bores. The height of uncool. Why it garners such a visceral reaction from fans like myself is the inexplicable way in which a band could have gone from such genuinely great heights to such lows in such a short space of time. Has a once great band ever had such a spectacular fall from grace like that? Pablo Honey never descends into such depravities - at worst, there are throwaway tracks. Certainly nothing I would rush to press skip if it came up on my iTunes shuffle, so the worst that can be said is for songs like Prove Yourself and that Thom's lyrics are a bit one dimensional and self pitying compared to what follows and the musical palette is much more limited (yet still excellently performed). Overall, I think it's a decent if unexceptional album.
