Im with Bruno on this one, Jake Bugg is defo a talent and will be around for years to come. He is fully justified in slaggin off One Direction, anyone who can even write their own name down on paper is also fully justified in slaggin off One Direction. Jake loves Oasis and the Monkeys, that tells me all i need to know TBH, and don't understand people on here talking him down. Im not too keen on his music in all honesty, but he deserves his success no doubt about it, One Direction on the other hand..... I hate One Direction like all on here. I just dont get the need to slag them off. They make pop songs for teenage girls and thats it. They've never come out and said that they're the best rock n roll band or whatever. Jake may be alright once he shuts his mouth and matures a bit. I remember when Alex Turner slagged off Take That then a few years later realized he was being a dick and apologized about it.

Radiohead fucking sucks. Sorry mate, I was trying to be polite about it before, but the fact is, you are conned into thinking you like it, but there is seriously less music content in one of their albums than in a first-time French Horn lesson for third graders. (Generalisation, I'm sure a few of their songs have some discernable melody) Radiohead is music for people who like to be alone, feel isolated and shit about their lives. Have fun mate, I'm sure theyre the best ever - and maybe they are, but I'd rather not be enlightened, finding messages in those walls of sound. Instead, toooniiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight, Imma rock n roooll staaaarrrrrrrr Sooome miiight saay, that we will fiiind a brigghter daaaay Kickin' up a storm, from the day that I was born seriously, what bands forum do you think youre on? Arctic Monkeys > Radiohead Let's face it, while it may be disputed on this forum and this thread, to me, they are my faves. I doubt they will (personally) be beaten - I will be checking out most of the bands people say they prefer. Just spotted this post, brilliant imo, well said mate. I agree totally.

I like Arctic Monkeys, especially their later stuff but the best bands around at the minute are all from across the pond. The Gaslight Anthem, FIDLAR, Queens Of The Stone Age, Arcade Fire, even The Strokes still have it although they'll never release another Is This It? again.
The last genuinely great British band were The Libertines. Like I said, Arctic Monkeys are good, but I wouldn't rank them among the greats even though they were pretty much the last huge band. The British press are massively obsessed with comparing new bands to the older greats and when they end up not sounding anything like them at all, they drop off. Look at Palma Violets. Everyone was branding them "this generation's Libertines" just because they have two singers and are from London, yet they sound nothing like The Libertines.
The past six months there's been a batch of new British guitar bands coming through, Palma Violets, Peace, Swim Deep and The 1975 namely, and while they're all decent enough it's obvious none of them are going to be looked back upon as era defining groups in 30 years time.
As for Jake Bugg. What a load of tosh. An annoying whiny voice, gimmicky retrogressive production and a fanbase mainly comprised of 15 year old wannabe mods and football casuals who were into Dizzee Rascal and Rihanna two years ago. I'm no fan of One Direction of course, but that kid from them had it spot on about him when he said "do you think slagging boy bands makes you more Indie?" He doesn't write his own songs either yet people are branding him a genius. Do me a favour.

Also that post about Radiohead is seriously misinformed and ignorant. So because they don't play songs with three or four simple guitar chords, utilise more than just the 4/4 time signature and don't sing proper real social commentary lyrics about proper lads from a council estate going to the pub and then having a kebab afterwards, there's no "musical content" in their songs?
I bet the person who wrote that think Liam Fray is a lyrical genius. lol.

Arctic Monkeys cannot be a current/new band though now can they? They're on their 5th Album, thats where Oasis were in 2002.
Jake Bugg is good and an hopefully his next album will be better than the 1st.
Tame Impala are doing some great stuff along with the Alabama Shakes. I saw The Vaccines supporting the stones a couple of weeks ago and thought they were good to, having initially been dissapointed when i saw them at a festival in 2012.
Has anyone heard Jagwar Ma - Howlin? That's a brilliant album.

Radiohead are boring as fuck, I just don't see the appeal personally. Id rather sit in silence than listen to that shit. I'm not the only one who thinks that. That's a pretty large crack epidemic, I must say. There is an everlasting debate over which of their albums is the best, that's a testament to how seminal they are. It's generally agreed that the best Arctic Monkeys is the first one (although I don't agree, I think it's Humbug) and that the best Oasis album is one of the first two. I'm not saying that either Oasis or Arctics are awful, of course, but I just find Radiohead's music more exciting and innovative. As much as both Oasis and Arctics have proved capable of writing some brilliant songs, both have worn their influences on their sleeves whilst Radiohead have been pushing the boundaries of music. I found Radiohead boring and hard to get into once too. But then I saw them headline Leeds about five years ago (incidentally on the same weekend Arctic Monkeys put on an abysmal performance) and I haven't looked back since. I felt like an idiot for not "getting" them before and being so dismissive of their music, because it really is wonderful. Only British bands I rate higher are the Manics, Pulp and The Clash. Just listen to Kid A and tell me it's not more interesting than Favourite Worst Nightmare!

The hate for Radiohead amongst some members here is confusing. I really don't see how tunes like 2+2=5, Just, Bodysnatchers, There There, Paranoid Android, Airbag, Idioteque, etc etc are boring.
I wonder if this hate would exist if Radiohead kept creating albums like The Bends because, for the most part, most of their material is similar to their contemporaries; just more thought out and interesting.
Or maybe its just because Liam doesn't like them.

Radiohead is great, but also overrated, it's good that they keep trying new thing in their sound, but also their experimentations sounds forced for the most part, doesn't sounds as natural as Blur for exemple, Blur were a natural art rock band, Radiohead seems like they experiment just for the sake of it, what Radiohead did with Kid A, Blur already did with 13.

I'm sure if they dressed like characters out of Green Street and sang songs about working class lads having a scrap outside the chippy they'd go down well on here. Even Pablo Honey is a great album, although I'm one of the few who thinks that. Stop Whispering is a wonderful song. And the rest of their stuff is just mesmerising in addition to the songs you mentioned. Optimistic, 15 Step, Everything In It's Right Place, No Surprises, Planet Telex, Just, All I Need. Christ, I think it'd be easier to list songs of theirs that aren't sheer brilliance. I also don't see what's sad about thinking that the Manics, Pulp, The Clash and Radiohead are the best British bands ever.

Blur's experimental phase still had that element of poppiness, whereas Radiohead went fully weird. 13 still had hit songs like Coffee And TV and Tender, both with huge singalong choruses. Kid A never had that. I do like 13 but I can't say that it feels more or less forced than Kid A. An example of an album sounding forced with it's experimentalism is This Is My Truth, Tell Me Yours by the Manics. Maybe their worst album. Blur properly went through their weird phase with Think Tank, which for me is perhaps their best album after Modern Life Is Rubbish.

Before kid A, Radiohead already had worldwide fame with Ok Computer, Blur didn't, that's why they put pop singles on 13, or it wouldn't sell ouside of UK, I guess it had much to do with their record company, but take out the singles on 13 and you'd have a similar album to Kid A, and also Kid A isn't totally weird, there is also pop songs there like Optimistic and Idioteque.

I don't see how its any more or less forced than Blur's self-titled and 13 album. The transition from OK Computer to Kid A is a bit more abrupt, but its simply a reflection of what they were listening to. DJ Shadow was a big influence on OK Computer and Kid A is really influenced by Warp records; its just more of a reflection of them moving away from guitars which doesn't seem too odd.

Overrated is exactly what Jake Bugg is. He released a good album - and that's it, he isn't a bad artist or anything. There are tonnes and tonnes of bands that write good, great and even brilliant albums that have far less hype, success and following than him. (and they write their own songs). That, is the issue with Jake Bugg. No, that is your issue with Jake Bugg. Wow, some of you are really bent out of shape over the fact that he's not written all the songs alone by himself. Never knew that was such a vital part of being a good artist. Co-writing songs and calling himself good, how dare he! Did you even read what I said? Or did you read it and then choose to respond to the one point you could try to object to? Point One: His album is not that good, he is very hyped up and successful despite there being many better bands around Point Two: He didn't write his songs on his own. Mostly the first, but also the second lead to me thinking that he is overrated, despite what you may think about co-writing songs.

I also don't see what's sad about thinking that the Manics, Pulp, The Clash and Radiohead are the best British bands ever. Am I missing something in Pulp? I like His n Hers, Different Class and This is Hardcore all quite a bit (lyrically brilliant), but just from those I don't even put them in my top 3 britpop bands, (behind Suede, Blur and obviously Oasis) so quite far from the best british bands ever for me. Did they do other things worth getting into or is this just a matter of taste? also never listen to Wirralriddler, he thinks that anyone who likes/lists AM and Oasis as an influence are hugely talented and brilliant, and is basically the reason which I find it difficult to associate with fans of the band.

First of all no one is saying he's the best so I don't see why other bands should be mentioned while rating him. We're talking about whether he's overrated or not and his album is good maybe not great but good and he's a good singer and guitarist. It doesn't matter if others are better or worse than him because no one has said he's the best.

Who the fuck do you think you are mate, you know fuck all about what i like, apart from Oasis and the Arctic's, i don't like ANY new bands whatsoever, none at all. So go fuck yourself. And anyone who rates Pulp, Manics and Radiohead among the best ever british bands are not worth listening to, IMO, its just laughable. Each to their own though, thankfully.

This Is Hardcore is one of the greatest albums ever, Different Class is genius as well, and His N' Hers is hugely underrated. I just love Jarvis Cocker's style, his lyrics and his swagger. Plus the songs have brilliant pop melodies. Great bands always make you feel several emotions, and Pulp do just that. I know a few people who sound like your description of WirralRiddler. Think that Liam Fray and Miles Kane are this generation's two biggest musical icons and don't acknowledge any music that isn't British, provincial and backed by the NME. twitter.com/totes_indie, basically. To be fair, I used to be like that at 16/17/18, going through my "Britrock lad" phase and would listen to little else but Oasis, Stone Roses, Mondays et al.
