Seeing the other thread, I think that most people are in agreement that Arctic Monkeys are in fact, not, Oasis.
But most people like them quite a bit. They have made 1 excellent album, 2 great ones, and 1 good one (FWN).
And I was thinking, shit, this is actually my favourite band producing and selling music. They have made 4 different and varied albums, all of which are worth owning, so I will really look forward to their next album.
I like a few other bands, but Arctic Monkeys are the best IMO.
Now, if you want to contribute to this wonderful discussion, I don't want to hear of Beady Eye, or Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds. I love them too, but one album doesn't really make them a 'current band' by the definition of current band we are using in this thread. Or any other very small bands who have released 1 album and may or may not release a second.
Arctic Monkeys, best current band, love'em, thread begin!

They are very high up there on my list, but I think I prefer a couple American bands, namely the Old 97's.

In Jannat the best band is comprised of Keith Moon, John Entwistle, George Harrison and John Lennon. They play every Friday night to the masses. You're really not funny at all. Sorry mate

Sorry mate I found the 'masses' kind of funny, assuming that it was a pun on the word, although now that I realise I know nothing about Allah, or whatever religious practice he's part of - that may not have even been intentional. Kasabian does seem to have a pretty wide following on this forum. Never met a single person in real life who really gets into them though, while Arctic Monkeys are fairly well known. The Black Keys get some recognition here, although I have never really gotten 'into' either of these bands. (Although I've tried harder to get into Radiohead, and I hate it with a burning passion now, so, maybe I'll give them another shot )

Radiohead are the Beatles of our time. So yes, they are the best.
And for the record, Allah, I'm a fan.

No, although they're great, they're not the best current band for me. I do love them. I've seen them live 4 times. What I love of them that they always try something new.
Alex Turner can be a boring front man, but he's got talent and can be one of the few who can change future music history.

no. as much as i love them. they don't. arcade fire is the best current band I totally agree - I think they are far and away the best band at the moment. Their debut and The Suburbs are genuine classics plus I saw them live at Edinburgh Castle a couple of months ago and they do the business live also. A genuinely great band. They are massive but they don't let it affect their creativity, and have found the perfect blend between artistic credibility and being accessible at the same time, a bit like U2 at their peak.

I'd say Kasabian.... And even though I'm not a fan, I do have respect for the Arctic Monkeys, and they have to be up there. Foo Fighters are also up there... Along with RHCP and Miles Kane (As Solo, LSP, TR or TLF) And The Killers, even though they haven't released much, recently

At the M.E.N as I type this awaiting them on stage. At the moment I would put them just behind Kasabian but it's very close. Really impressed with Suck it and See excited to see how it comes over live.

The Stone Roses. /jk I'm afraid I don't like most modern "big" bands too much - AM are OK, as is Radiohead, but things like KOL, Kasabian or Muse do nothing for me. I love Mando Diao and The View, but they're not really "epic" enough, and REM is sadly out of the picture... Knowing this will earn me a lot of hate, it's Green Day for me. With one or two exceptions all their albums are pretty amazing...they still do solid rock music and are great live. (They're also one of the very few rock bands that are big in the US.)

Radiohead are the Beatles of our time. So yes, they are the best. I know how incredibly stupid it is to argue with a Radiohead fan (at least we are both on an Oasis forum so you can't just pull out the Beatles Copiers-One Album Wonders or whatever) - but the fact is, they just can't be the Beatles of this time. I personally consider my music taste to be better than most peoples. 50% of the population of the world easily. And I've tried more than a few times to get into radiohead, (The Bends and OK Computer if it makes any difference). But quite frankly, either I'm missing something, or they suck. I'm inclined to believe a mixture of the two. Radiohead has no mass appeal, its music for people who want to sit at home and feel shit about life. The instrument is a computer, and the actual song just feels hidden, it never reaches out and grabs you at all. I know I could be in for some shit, but there is no way that Radiohead are the Beatles of the time.
Green Day is a surprising response. I got into 21st Century Breakdown at the time, I loved the singles (and a few more) from American Idiot and Dookie has a few good songs - but for some reason I would never think to consider them on the same level as Arctic Monkeys..
Arcade Fire is probably another one I should try then... And yeah, Suck it and See was pretty great, the tiny step more socially acceptable than Humbug which makes people think its a return to form. Just think of what it could have been if it didn't have Brick by Brick or (less importantly) Library Pictures.

I can't say Radiohead, because for me, their later work pales so much in comparison with The Bends and OK Computer. They have the odd fleeting moment of magic here and there like Codex and Pyramid Song, but I've thought a lot of their later work has been meandering and incredibly dull.

I can see where you're coming from. Bottom line is I think Radiohead were brilliant and The Bends is one of my favourite albums, but every 'hipster' would fall head over heels if Thom Yorke farted into the microphone, cooing and saying 'oh how original'. This attitude from elitist Radiohead fans and the music press really puts me off them. Look, they're not that great and there are far and away millions of better bands out there. And I think Thom Yorke is the most arrogant pretentious overrated twerp ever, spouting bullshit whenever he talks and always having a sense of superiority over everyone - just reading his description of Street Spirit makes you puke. To me, he's just a robotic dullard.
