i've never heard a song by arcade fire, so they must be really good "No Cars Go" and "Neon Bible" and you have the answer.

For all the AF fans: They'll be streaming one of their two Madison Square Garden shows on July 5th. i've never heard a song by arcade fire, so they must be really good Well they only have two albums so it can't be that hard. Just wait until this August, their profile will sky-rocket thanks to their new album.

Matt Bellamy is the most pretentious man in music. He makes good music. But to quote a review of BHAR, "I've heard Britney Spears sing lyrics with more sincerity than Bellamy's vague space-pondering". You think that's pretentious? Try this load of bull shit: "Street Spirit is our purest song, but I didn't write it. It wrote itself. We were just its messengers; its biological catalysts. Its core is a complete mystery to me, and, you know, I wouldn't ever try to write something that hopeless. All of our saddest songs have somewhere in them at least a glimmer of resolve. Street Spirit has no resolve. It is the dark tunnel without the light at the end. It represents all tragic emotion that is so hurtful that the sound of that melody is its only definition. We all have a way of dealing with that song. It's called detachment. Especially me; I detach my emotional radar from that song, or I couldn't play it. I'd crack. I'd break down on stage. That's why its lyrics are just a bunch of mini-stories or visual images as opposed to a cohesive explanation of its meaning. I used images set to the music that I thought would convey the emotional entirety of the lyric and music working together. That's what's meant by 'all these things you'll one day swallow whole'. I meant the emotional entirety, because I didn't have it in me to articulate the emotion. I'd crack... Our fans are braver than I to let that song penetrate them, or maybe they don't realise what they're listening to. They don't realise that Street Spirit is about staring the fucking devil right in the eyes, and knowing, no matter what the hell you do, he'll get the last laugh. And it's real, and true. The devil really will get the last laugh in all cases without exception, and if I let myself think about that too long, I'd crack. I can't believe we have fans that can deal emotionally with that song. That's why I'm convinced that they don't know what it's about. It's why we play it towards the end of our sets. It drains me, and it shakes me, and hurts like hell every time I play it, looking out at thousands of people cheering and smiling, oblivious to the tragedy of its meaning, like when you're going to have your dog put down and it's wagging its tail on the way there. That's what they all look like, and it breaks my heart. I wish that song hadn't picked us as its catalysts, and so I don't claim it. It asks too much. I didn't write that song" That's possibly the stupidest thing i've ever read and i've read the Da Vinci Code FUCK that just get's worse and worse as you go along.

If a band needs to be relatively active, then I see why the Stones or the Who don't qualify. And yes, they are definitely ahead of their prime, but both bands know how to put on a rock and roll show. Isn't that what it's all about?
Then my definitive answer would be U2. Their last album "No Line on the Horizon" was one of the best albums in recent years in my opinion. Love "Moment of Surrender", "Breathe" and "Magnificent". U2 are also the best live act in the world, no doubt about it.

They definitely are one of the best live acts in the world, at the very least.

Exactly. Their concerts are more musical experiences than casual concerts. It really is something that needs to be experienced.

It goes without saying they are one of, if not the best live band in the world. But touching upon their most recent album, No Line On The Horizon, I think it's an amazing album (misunderstood by some critics but also given high status by others), despite the fact it took me a while to really appreciate it. There is amazing depth to Bono's lyrics on this album and it steers away from the rather generic and stale How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb. It's easy to write off U2 because unfortunately in my eyes people regard Bono as a 'twat' but amazingly, 30 years on this band are still proving to be relevant and still seem to show their younger peers how it's done.

Best Live Band in the world? Yes No Line On The Horizon however, is nothing short of a turd.

Best Live Band in the world? Yes No Line On The Horizon however, is nothing short of a turd. It took me literally over a year to appreciate the album but I got it after then. If you understand what Bono is going on about (and it took me an age to discover) then you do see the beauty in the songs. Sure, Get On Your Boots sounds a bit like a sophisticated fart and alll but all in all I really like it. But if you don't like it, fair enough, I understand and respect your opinion.

U2's latest while it wasn't heard that much on the radio (at least where i'm from) they still are arguably biggest band in the world a title they reclaimed in 2000. they aren't as good as they once were but their influence can be heard everywhere and just like a Classic/Great Oasis tune they can't be topped when they are on their A game.
Coldplay when they release an album they are the biggest band in the world. But as far as the best? Nope. Viva was a good record, I love parachutes and AROBTH, X&Y is meh. A hell of a live act like U2.
The Killers have an amazing debut, a solid sophomore album, and a pretty good Third album. They fill out stadiums, they have epic tunes, they put on a pretty good show, they have the ambition to be huge but they aren't quiet there yet musically.
Arctic Monkeys aren't even close to being the best band in the world. They've lost a good amount of steam since 2006. The write good tunes but I've always preferred The Rifles.
The Strokes for the first couple years of the decade they were one of the best bands in the world. But after the pretty forgettable third album and a long break they have lost steam and if their next album isn't good I will begin to lose faith (it shouldn't take 5 years for a band that young, even if they have solo projects to come up with something great but if they do then great.)
Kasabian are slowly progressing over time but I doubt that they have the chops to become the best of the best even though Tom is a helluva frontman.
Muse continue to get bigger and bigger but as they've gotten bigger they've progressively gotten shitter. I've never really been a fan though just a casual listen through each album a couple times through. So maybe my opinion is void on them haha.
Radiohead very well could be the best band in the world. In Rainbows is a stunning album. My second favorite after the The Bends from them. As The Importance said before they have commercial and critical success that relatively no bands have. They constantly create something totally new and it sounds brilliant (most of the time).
However after hearing The Suburbs I can say that Arcade Fire is probably gonna claim the title. it's a very very exciting time for them. You can tell they are right on the edge of becoming huge. They are playing bigger shows their music is improving and they are relatively young so I still feel like they have the fire and desire and the will to push themselves. They aren't my favorite band but I can see them claiming the title and they are probably the best choice over some other bands.

The Killers have the right attitude, Flowers wants to make a classic album. I don't think he has it in him though. For the record, I like Sam's Town and Day and Age more then most, but nothing on them points towards a greater future.
Thank goodness no one mentioned the Kings of Shit lately. Those fuckers left a concert because a bird shit on the guitarist. They're such a bunch of whining bitches, someone put them out to pasture.

I agree there. They've turned into a bunch of indie boy fannies - plus the fact their music has got worse.

Would you play on if you were being coated in pigeon droppings? If a bird shat in your mouth? I seriously fucking doubt it. And as such I don't think anyone should use it as a stick to beat them with.

Kings of Leon are shit, and this situation with the birds shitting on them ( I guess the poor animals couldn't spend more time listening to that ) is just lame, you can't stop the gig just for that.

I don't imagine for one second that being in Kings of Leon makes being shat on any more bearable.

I'm late to this thread... but...
Radiohead are the best band in the world. And they were long before Oasis split up too.
Arcade Fire are up there, but still have quite a way to go before they can touch Radiohead.
