does Noel like them? In the US no one has ever heard of them. I hear Noel refer to them alot as an influence....I watched a VH1 special on British indie rock...They showed clips of them...They were the stupidest band I've ever seen...They were the exact opposite of what Oasis embodies....how are they a influence? I could see how they may of influence Blur....just an opinion.

The Smiths made brilliant melodic pop music, so do Oasis. Why do you think they are the exact opposite?
I don't know if Liam is a big fan of them, but Noel has obviously been hugely influenced by Johnny Marr. If you listen to his early songs from that tape that was released a couple of years back you can totally hear The Smiths in there.

The best Smiths song is 'This Charming Man'. I know it's the most obvious, but it's a hit for one reason - it's fucking brill.

I think The Smiths are brilliant, but what you think about The Stone Roses? Noel point them as another great influence, but you have to find them twice as horrible I think.
You don't have to take influences very seriously, it don't mean they copy a band. I never get the point that Oasis are much like The Beatles so.
By the way, it's your right to think The Smiths are horrible..

You might just need some time to get into The Smiths properly. I remember when I first heard the first eponymous album, I wasn't too impressed. The drums sounded a bit '80s and Morrissey was singing weird lyrics in a weird way.
But after a short while I began to understand their brilliance... And so can you.
Check out The Queen Is Dead and Strangeways, Here We Come. They're both seamlessly brilliant, total 5-star albums, no weak second of music on them. The Smiths were truly one of a kind, there's never been a band like them since and there will probably never be. And, they quit while they were still hot. That's very commendable!
Edit: Oh, and by the way, what you said about "no-one knowing about them in America", that's not true. I've met very many Americans who know and love The Smiths.

Edit: Oh, and by the way, what you said about "no-one knowing about them in America", that's not true. I've met very many Americans who know and love The Smiths. One of the most famous would be Craig Kilborn, who was a diehard fan and had Morrissey on his show several times. What I'm getting from your posts, walrus, is that a few clips from a documentary makes up everything you've heard from them and now you've already decided that you hate them and they're "the exact opposite of what Oasis embodies." If you're that quick to judge and music has to be that accessible to you, this probably isn't your band anyway.

The smiths are pretty good. I wouldn't rank them as the as good as Oasis or the roses. But they are a fine bad. Morrissey is quite the lyricist but for some reason i've never been to grasp the fact that people think he is one of the best vocalists of all time. Marr on the other hand is a pure genius. The smiths, atleast where I'am at are like a cult band. But everyone is like emo who listens to them. I'm like wtf. "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out" is one of the greatest songs of all time.

Morrissey is a poet and he is top as a vocalist and writer. And Marr is one of the best!! Sexy!

I love some of their songs, but I can't get past morrissey's voice- just incredibly irritating to me. But the rest of the music and lyrics are great... Love noels version of there is light that never goes out...

The Smiths are one of the most awesome, unique bands, ever.
Beautiful music. Genius lyrics that if you actually listen to, you can relate to as a teenager - gay, straight, whatever.
They're definitely not for everyone. They are one of those bands where you love them, or hate them, but seldom in between. And those people that love them, are somewhat obsessive about them.

They pre-date emo kids by about twenty fucking years. And I don't even know where to begin answering that final comment of yours. Farcical.
