Morrissey is the only thing people can't get round with the smiths I find. Me however, I think his lyrics are brilliant and people who think they are depressing are usually missing the point. I'd agree with that sentiment. I think Morrissey is the chief reason people distance themselves from The Smiths. There are aspects of his personality - his intellect, his demeanour, his candour - that make him seem inaccessible; but, as you rightly point out, the biggest problem lies in misinterpretation of his lyrics, where the majority of people mistake wit and sarcasm for melancholy. And to answer your question: his solo albums (with the exception of You Are The Quarry) certainly don't match up to The Smiths in terms of consistent quality, but there are a handful of tunes that, for me, rank alongside The Smiths' best work. The man's a fucking God around these parts.

I agree, I hate Morrissey's voice. I kind of agree. I wouldn't say hate, but it sort of gets annoying. Don't get me wrong, I am definitely a fan of the band, but I always wonder what they would have been like if his voice was a bit wider in range. He is a brilliant songwriter and Marr is one of the all time greats. Take him (Marr) out of the equation and I would not even listen to them I don't think. Perhaps why I have never listened to a single Morrissey solo album.

Perhaps why I have never listened to a single Morrissey solo album. You should try. Starting with You Are The Quarry.

i think morrissey is a tosser if it wasnt for johnny marr we would never heard of stephen
anyways musically very good but morrisseys vocals suck the thing with the smiths, stone roses etc are put on this pedestal by fans some famous some not.theyre not GREAT but they were the band of the time(s)
take the beatles also put on a pedestal cause they were the first to have appeal.there are many bands musically and lyrically better(doesnt take much to beat ob-la-de-oh-bla-da does it)from the 60s forgetting the popular ones(ah la the who(who in my opinon are the best of the 60s)kinks,small faces)beatles are very poor indeed.
but to say the smiths are rubbish well maybe check out some covers of them instead of watching 5 mins of a documentary then hear the band with possibly better singer.
i honestly read this post as "cause noel says he likes the smiths i should do and dont please help"so decided share the fact YOU have a choice and others here should maybe respect that instead of the customery "are you serious/joking/mad" comments

Personally I think the verve are the most under rated band of recent times... You may think that is an odd statement, due to success of urban hymns. But I think the real verve were from 92-95. Listening to "a storm in heaven" and the "verve ep" is a breath of fresh air every time.... nothing to do with the topic... but fuck it. haha.
The smiths, if you like them or not, as with every aspect of music is down to your own opinion. Noel has his... you can have yours.

But I think the real verve were from 92-95. This is true. A Storm In Heaven is my favourite Verve album.

I'm sorry but anyone who says the smiths are a horrible band is wrong.
Morrisseys lyrics are beautiful. Not depressing or stupid, beautiful, nothing less. Listen to i know its over and tell me he isn't the greatest songwriter of all time.
Johnny marr's guitar playing is simply outstanding, every song, no exception his guitar work is brilliant.
Suffer little children That joke isn't funny anymore How soon is now?
Those 3 songs match anything oasis did to me.
Oasis The Beatles The Smiths.
Are the 3 best bands of all time. No debate (pink Floyd came close).

I had pretty much the same opinion. Thought There Is A Light was fantastic but that was it. Then I heard What Difference Does It Make? and the riff had me hooked. Marr is something special.

I bought a compilation album and that absolutely changed my mind about them. Fucking brilliant. Up there with the greats.

The Smiths have become one of my favorite bands ever over this past year. Everything about them is amazing, and they never made a bad album. My favorite song from them changes from time to time, but it usually ends up being the Headmaster Ritual, which I think represents the Smiths the best. To me the Queen is Dead is my favorite album from them, and I especially love Johnny Marr and everything he did in the band, what a genuis

I love The Smiths more than I can tell. They are one of my 3 life time bands - The Smiths, The Jam and Oasis.
They have had all those B-sides, as great as A-sides and that's one of their charms.

Wow, I thought the best song was This Charming Man back in 08 - that said I had only got the new Best Of that had just been released. Wouldn't rank in my top 20 for sure, maybe not even top 30!
For me, they are my favourite band ever which means I think they are the greatest band of all time, I could write a whole book as to why I think so. Certainly, it's definitely not an overstatement in believing them and The Beatles are the most influential bands that have come from Britain.
Everything about them was perfect - literally.

Reel Around the Fountain was the first Smiths song that I listened to, ever. Still absolutely love that song, one of my favorites of theirs. 15 minutes with Ebby Calvin 'Nuke' LaLoosh, oh I wouldn't say no....

I'm not gay, I just wanna have a cuddle party with Tom Brady and Urban Meyer. Light petting, a backrub, maybe penetration; who knows, we'll see. Thanks.

Very unique band. They're one of those bands that it takes time to appriciate because they sound so different to every other "great" band. But once you "get" them, you're hooked.

does Noel like them? In the US no one has ever heard of them. I hear Noel refer to them alot as an influence....I watched a VH1 special on British indie rock...They showed clips of them...They were the stupidest band I've ever seen...They were the exact opposite of what Oasis embodies....how are they a influence? I could see how they may of influence Blur....just an opinion. Is this a troll topic? Just because they're unlike Oasis, doesn't mean they can't influence Oasis. The Smiths were in fact a massive influence on Noel's song writing and are one of the greatest bands this country has ever produced. You don't have to like them that's fair enough, but saying they're stupid and horrible just makes you sound fucking childish.

Rob I'd actually say The Verve are probably the most under rated band of ALL time. Everyone who knows of the verve looks to urban hymns and beyond. They never go back to storm in heaven or northern soul. My GOD, northern soul was a genre defining album. I have the demos from that album too, and even they are just unbelievable pieces of music.
