No one can beat the beauty of Morrissey's vocals, (see the boy with the thorn), no one can beat the painful honesty in his lyrics (i know its over, unloveable) and absolutely no one can beat johnny marrs guitar work. (some girls are bugger than others, most songs actually) And the rhythm section is underrated aswell, Andy Rourke, delivers one of the best basslines of all time on Barbarism..
The Smiths > (only just) Oasis.
Dont hate me for it, that's just my personal opinion. But seriously listen to How soon is now and tell me theyre not a brilliant band.

That's very very true. that outro/bass solo from "Barbarism Begins At Home" is Andy Rourke's masterpiece. Love Marr's guitar on Some Girls are Bigger Than Others....absolutely love the euphoric outro. Marr is a wizard. "Johnny, you're the guitar wizard" - Noel

I'd wish my english was better to explain properly why The Smiths are the best band that ever existed.
Morrissey / Marr's unbelievable talent, 4 perfect albums and a brilliant one, amazing live performances, best lyrics I've ever heard... So I'll just leave my two favourite songs here.

I'm sorry but anyone who says the smiths are a horrible band is wrong. Morrisseys lyrics are beautiful. Not depressing or stupid, beautiful, nothing less. Listen to i know its over and tell me he isn't the greatest songwriter of all time. Johnny marr's guitar playing is simply outstanding, every song, no exception his guitar work is brilliant. Suffer little children That joke isn't funny anymore How soon is now? Those 3 songs match anything oasis did to me. Oasis The Beatles The Smiths. Are the 3 best bands of all time. No debate (pink Floyd came close). In my opinionCorrected a bit On topic: i really like some of their tunes, but i'm not really a fan of morrisey's vocals, not a bad singer, just not my thing, thats all, Marr is a great guitarist though

The Smiths are absolutely brilliant. One of the most unique bands of all time.
Morrissey has an incredible voice; so far removed from every other 'rock' band around at the time. His dark humour certainly comes across in his lyrics, which aren't miserable as many people think. As far as lyricists go he is up there with the likes of Bob Dylan.
Johnny Marr is an exceptional guitarist that often doesn't get credit for how good he is (read the Mighty I thread). Some people I've talked to have never even heard of him before. Perhaps the reason is that he doesn't play long, self-indulgent, fret-wanking guitar solos that would catapult him into the spotlight. He 100% sounds like he is playing for the song rather than playing to make himself sound good. What he plays sounds reasonably simple on the record but then when you pick up a guitar you realise how difficult it is.
The rhythm section is criminally underrated - probably because they weren't credited with the writing. Rourke and Joyce sound very tight together although the production on the drums has that "eighties" echoey sound to it.
The Smiths have become a bit of a running joke in my house because my dad absolutely hates everything about them. I always try and slip the odd song onto his iPod.
As Noel said, "They're a great, great band. Up there with the Kinks."

The Smiths are probably the only band - along with Oasis - who make me cry regularly. I don't know why that is, it just tells me that they are one of these very special bands that you can't just "like" but instead deeply love. I've been listening to The Smiths for quite a few years now (for years I only had "The sound of the smiths") and getting really into them now since I have every album now. They are on their way of becoming one of my all time favourite bands, I think they already are. Sometimes I wish I was british so that I could totally get Morrisseys lyrics. It often takes some research for me to get everything. What are your favourite lyrics? Marr's genius was more than evident when I first hear Some girls are bigger than others. I was totally hookedand I needed to learn that on the guitar. His melodies are extraordinary and exceptional. What a duo that was. I'd like to know, if there is a Smiths forum like this one for Oasis somewhere or if you could recommend one

We could easily make our own Smiths sub-forum on here, I think we are enough fanatics I somehow think I won't find a forum equally as great as this one...

I've only listened to There's A Light That Never Goes Out because Noel covered it but it doesn't make me want to listen to more of their music. Or is this the same with saying I don't like Oasis beacuse I heard (Probably) All In The Mind?

I suppose you could compare it to hearing Wonderwall, in that they're both very famous love songs by the respective bands.

Wonderful and unique band. Saw Johnny front row last year and the sound he produces from his instrument are amazing. Crowd went crazy when he played that opening riff to Bigmouth Strikes again.

I like the Smiths, but I'm not a huge fan or anything. I think I heard Panic! on the radio years ago and thought it sounded funny. Then, a bit later, I saw something on BBC that had This Charming Man in it with Morrissey swinging those flowers around. And then I heard There's A Light That Never Goes Out and thought it was one of the most beautiful songs ever and it made me want to check out more of their stuff. Great band.
