Well, guess I'm fucked. No point in fighting it. Might as well give up on being a sarcastic foul-mouth, stop watching football, and swear allegiance to The Beatles and Harry Potter as soon as possible, eh?

You also have to drool on Ewan McGregor and Johnny Depp (but you won't have to force yourself for that one )

does Noel like them? In the US no one has ever heard of them. I hear Noel refer to them alot as an influence....I watched a VH1 special on British indie rock...They showed clips of them...They were the stupidest band I've ever seen...They were the exact opposite of what Oasis embodies....how are they a influence? I could see how they may of influence Blur....just an opinion. I kinda wish I would never read your post. First, The Smiths are my lifetime band, my most favourite band in the world. Even Oasis will never take their place. I do understand why people don't like them and Morrissey. Everyone has their own taste and we should accept that. The Smiths have created lots of great pop songs in the early 80's and their songs are timeless. Young Noel Gallagher was a huge fan of The Smiths and he wanted to make a lots of great B-sides like The Smiths had. Noel was a good mate with Ian Marr, younger brother of my guitar hero. Ian and Noel spent their younger days together in Hacienda and Johnny introduced Oasis to his manager and helping them a lot in their early days. I don't think you've ever heard Noel's early demos, but like globe said, you can definitely hear their influence in Noel's early songs. If you just start this thread to wind people up, please leave us alone. If you still think they're the stupidest band you've ever seen, I really feel sorry for you, but it's just me...yet, The Smiths were/are great, just great. Mimmi is gonna castrate you. And rightfully so Lol, you know me well now.

and mimmi closed this discussion *clap, clap* Fucking hell, that's no fun. Respecting other people's opinions is boring. I'm re-opening this discussion to anyone who dislikes The Smiths and/or Morrissey enough to perpetuate a proper argument.

Fucking hell, that's no fun. Respecting other people's opinions is boring. like you do. you still failed to convince us the smiths are a good band. you can keep discussing, I accept mimmi's opinion, that doesn't change the way I think about them. I still think they're shite. but that's me.

Well, if you think they're shite, why would you accept the word of someone who thinks otherwise? Doesn't make a lick of sense to me. I mean, for the record, I don't care that you think they're shite, but that doesn't mean I'll be waving the white flag. It's the concept of surrender I can't get my head around.

I didn't surrender. I said mimmi made a valid point in the topic of this thread. what did the started said? "why does noel like them?" that's the point. but I still think they are shite. I think ALL 80s music is shite. it's a decade I wish never happened for music. and fashion. but mostly music

I think ALL 80s music is shite. it's a decade I wish never happened for music. and fashion. but mostly music I used to think the same way of the 80s but then I dug deep and found bands like Pixies, Replacements, early R.E.M, Cocteau Twins, Dinosaur Jr., the cure (not all of they're output), JAMC, U2 (they were very good in the 80s) and fucking SODA STEREO (you should know it eva)... I'm sure I'm leaving some great bands out of that list as well. So not ALL 80's music is shit. Sure the popular music was shit but it's been that way for a VERY LONG TIME. I know Noel cites the Smiths as a very big influence but that doesn't mean everyone here must like them. I like some of their songs but don't consider them to be all that great. I'm sure it has something to do with the production which was shit in the 80's... good band and I can see why some love them but I don't consider them to be anything special. edit: on the other hand I love most of Morrisey's solo stuff

that made me laugh I don't like the smiths either, but as usual, not everyone likes what you want. if noel likes them, what the hell, I don't care. and like globe said, his early stuff sounds a lot like the smiths. thanks god now it's quite different ;D I agree very much with you! ;D I agree, I hate Morrissey's voice. And you too ;D I completely agree......and as Noel Westerberg said they aren't everyones taste.

imo Johnny Marr is the most original/creative guitarist like really, he takes a simple chord progression yet will mutitrack about (no joke) 10-15 riffs/other guitars ontop of it to make a really amazing song i would love to see any of these "amazing guitarists of nowadays" to be able to do what he did with the smiths.
Honestly you can get lost trying to pick out all the different guitar parts in smiths songs.... yet he makes every song sound different.... can anyone else do that? no....
Is oasis as good as the smiths on a guitarist level... no way.... Johnny Marr is a guitar god
and i'd like to point out thyat while the smiths aren't my number one band... they are by far the most original of the past 5 decades.

I could see how they may of influence Blur....just an opinion. Dear lad/lass your interpretation of "influence" is half assed. Just bc one list something/someone as influence, doesn't mean that what you create has to replicate the person/thing that influenced you. So bc Noel says the smiths influenced him, and Oasis and the smiths do appear as "night & day" but, when you really take the time to fully understand both, you can see where Noel pinched...erm I mean, got his influence. I suggest you star with The Smiths singles and work your way to their Bsides, not only is Johnny a SUPERB guitar master, but Morrissey is indeed a poet. There is no other lyricist in the past 26yrs that comes close to him. To put it in plain english; You don't have Morrissey/The Smihs, the current state of British music would be non existent for the past 15 or so years. you don't have to like The Smiths, but understand how they really influenced music today.

Lyrically, melodically, vocally, technically, the Smiths had it all.
The Smiths were a genius band. End of.

It reminds me of when I said I didn't like Pink Floyd to which I was answered that without Pink Floyd there would be no Muse today...
Well, it doesn't change the fact I can't stand Pink Floyd ;D

Morrissey is the only thing people can't get round with the smiths I find. Me however, I think his lyrics are brilliant and people who think they are depressing are usually missing the point... although some i admit "i know its over" and "asleep" for example dont exactly make you dance. haha
They were consistent as well... I hate the fact every oasis album is dubbed "return to form". But, I think thats more to do with the media not being able to write anything interesting.
Supersonic1983 and all the other fans, how do you view morrissey's solo work out of interest?
Rob
