No one actually votes for Joe Biden, but rather vote anti-Trump. And the anti-Trump vote in 2024 is not anywhere near as strong as it was in 2020. Further, there is now a significant anti-Biden voter demographic. Ergo, Joe Biden can’t win in November. Why would anyone vote for Trump? Tiktok is essentially controlled by the Chinese government. This is problematic both from a user data/privacy perspective and a propaganda perspective. Tiktok is a social medium where anti-Western desinformation, from Russian, Chinese and Middle Eastern sources, flourish. It is especially dangerous since its audience is so young. And then you have the more general problem that social media fucks up young people's brains with the never-ending dopamine shots. I read that Florida introduced a social media ban for kids younger than 14. You are probably right that it is not electorally clever in the short term, though. It sounds reasonable that it may hurt Biden in the election. It is also interesting that Trump has changed his mind on Tiktok (as far as I understand). But maybe understandable since he is largely dependant on desinformation and is actively promoting pro-Kremlin narratives. So pass privacy laws ...You think only Chinese apps violate your privacy? Don't ban the app. Ban the policies that allow for spying. And pass it across the board for ALL these social media apps. If it's not okay for China, it's not okay for Meta or X and so on ...
Misinformation can be passed around everywhere on the internet. Ban the internet? There's also good info on TikTok. I'm one of the rare folks putting out educational info. I started doing it because I was unhappy with the brain-dead content the app is best known for. I wanted to pepper in content with actual value. Your support for a ban, takes away part of my livelihood. Why support attacking my wallet?
You are hitting the nail on the head however. Tiktok is threatening mainstream media. Young people almost exclusively use TikTok to get the news. And some of the largest trending news circulating on TikTok this very moment is everything related to the Israeli genocide of Gaza and the protests erupting around the world. Biden, being a self declared Zionist and someone who is clearly willing to ignore the murder of over 15,000 children and 37,000 innocent civilians, is threatened by Tiktok. This ban of course also benefits conservative politicians. And democrats controlled by AIPAC.
Because unlike mainstream media, you're actually getting real and better coverage of the atrocities from the more independent sources. The mainstream media is heavily biased towards one side and is censoring information as Mehdi Hasan brilliantly demonstrates: But of course, when there's news of a new mass grave found, with evidence of children bound, tortured and executed, that's going to be super embarrassing for the current administration. So of course, try to shut that shit down. So you don't look like the villain when you send billions of dollars worth of more weapons and missiles to the people responsible for doing the crimes so that they can continue to murder more innocent people. Not a good look. And that's why they are banning TikTok, let's be honest.

The issue is not as easy as I tried to make it look like in my previous post. Second: I am all for stronger regulation of the big tech giants on privacy issues, but there is a major difference between US companies such as Google, Apple and Facebook, and Tiktok on the other hand. Tiktok is a Chinese company. China is a dictatorship. There is no free enterprise in China, especially not among its big corporations. China is actively undermining Western interests all over the world. It is using our openness to their advantage. Therefore you may see more pro-Palestinian propaganda on Tiktok, but less critical information on China's persecution of muslims or Russia's invasion of Ukraine. However, I understand that Tiktok has been important for the resistance in the Islamic Republic of Iran, so it is not entirely black and white. |

Yet, the United States just passed a law banning its citizens from accessing an entire platform, all because of highly unfavorable, very embarrassing (and true) coverage of an ongoing historical event is popular there and is embarrassing for the current administration. The conservatives already wanted this bill. They originally introduced something like it and the democrats blocked it. Now the democrats are onboard with blocking the app the moment they see popular news that put themselves in the crosshairs.
Banning this platform is the same type of behavior that China displays. China bans to be able to control the public narrative and suppress criticism. Well, if you think that Tiktok is getting banned all over the west because of a few pro-palestinian accounts you are probably over-estimating the importance of this conflict and those accounts... Banning tiktok is in a way the same type of behaviour as China displays, yes. As I said, it is not unproblematic. But China are banning Tiktok's Western counterparts and using Western openness to their advantage. They are working exactly in the same way as they have done on trade and economic openness. In the same way as for example Russian and Middle Eastern governments have operated in other sectors of society. They use Western openness to their advantage and become stronger as a result. The west has started to react with the same medicine against China on trade and I believe that this is good and unavoidable. You have to understand how the Chinese government is using information collected from the west to persecute its own dissidents and advance their agenda on the global stage. It is not comparable to Facebook and Google collecting user data. There is a reason the app is banned on the phones of state employees in a lot of countries, not just in the US. And you can't compare the Biden administration funding the police (!) to the Chinese Communist Party's terror against its own citizens. If the Democrats go in the "defund the police" direction it will cause 1) disorder and chaos and 2) huge electoral losses. |

It’s so sad that media/social media has created this pervasive level of division in people and caused such a giant collapse of critical thinking. If you solely digest info from sources created, not only to oppose one side, but to demonize them, how can you learn anything? The answer is, you CAN’T.
Limiting yourself one side of politics when consuming information fosters inherent biases and can lead to views that are uninformed and skewed. Watching/reading/listening to diverse perspectives is essential to gaining a comprehensive understanding of complex issues and fostering informed opinions. The majority of humans are just too goddamn far up their own asses to understand they’re toying with us.
Neither side gives a single fuck about the common man. If you genuinely believe one is superior to the other, you’re voluntarily deaf, dumb and blind.
