By the time I've uploaded all songs from this night, Oasis have split up again
and reunited again, but here's another one 3 months after.
Hope you enjoy the sound, tried my best to make the most of it.
Excellent recording. It sounds like a soundboard. Do you have others of the same quality?
Thank you! Eventually I will, since I make these specifically for the uploads of the videos I shot that night. My uploads of ‘Half The World Away’ and ‘Cloudburst’ had my own audio recording with good mics from the crowd. I had to work very hard to salvage as much as I could, due to the godawful sound by default during Liam Gallagher’s solo shows.
Because ‘Digsy’s Dinner’ had a different approach, as you noted. It is indeed a bit of soundboard, in a way. Normally, I never give away the full recipe
but of course I appreciate that people noticed how good it sounds.
I've torn apart all sources available for that night: my own audio recording with my bootleg kit, the other full audience audio source from a different spot, and the in-ear monitor rip available. As I said, the audience recordings are almost useless for something that resembles a bit of professionalism.
The in-ear monitor rips are very useful, but are, by nature, out of balance, harsh-sounding, over-compressed, and contain static interferences. Obviously, they don’t have any of the crowd or atmosphere of the venue and sound very dry. To start with, I EQ’d the harsh in-ear source while comparing closely to the soundboards of other shows available. I then EQ’d the audience tapes to that as well. There are many more steps, but let’s try to keep it a bit clear, haha.
For the in-ear source, I isolated the drums, guitar, keys, vocals, and bass guitar (which was almost inaudible). Then I isolated the kick drum, snare drum, cymbals, and toms from the drums. I isolated the audience tapes partly as well to have some more room. But most importantly for those, I isolated the crowd noise from both audience sources. I then first eliminated the crowd chatter, but kept both the crowd singalongs and the atmosphere of the room, both separately.
Then I mixed all those isolated tracks together and worked a lot on the separate tracks as well. For example, the kick drum was almost inaudible, the bass guitar dropped out a lot, and the guitars were sounding flat, and so on. For fun I did things like making the drums stereo, listen for the toms for example (not completely authentic for the drummers out there, but what can you do).
In the end, you have the best of both worlds: the crowd and “room” present but without the muffled sound, and the direct elements from the soundboard (through IEM) to beef it all up, all well balanced.
Actually, as testimony to how terrible the sound on the spot was, here’s a quick comparison I did for this particular song:
Yes, it sounds like I’ve literally recorded this stealth from under my shoe, but although I’m not Richard Osman, the mics couldn’t have been higher up. The spot itself, center and in between FOH and stage, should also be ideal for the best sound.
I also doubt the venue itself was the culprit. I’ve seen Liam Gallagher live in many venues renowned for fantastic sound, like Ziggo Dome and Heineken Music Hall in Amsterdam, and the one act that always sounds like they only turned up the monitors on stage is Liam Gallagher.
A good comparison would be this video I shot. Rock song, same mic, also fairly central between FOH and stage. But this show had a very quiet sound (due to restrictions outside), with a loud crowd overpowering the music. And yet… the music itself is clear, not muffled, with a great balance.
Anyway, do I get it right that all pro-shots from this tour are the ‘Half The World Away’ promo, Reading, and TRSNMT? In other words, for ‘Cloudburst’, ‘I Will Believe’, and ‘Lock All the Doors’, there are no pro-shots available, including counting previous tours (‘Fade Away’, ‘Spaceman’, etc.)?
