What songs do you think they barely if ever got truly right live?
For me:
- some might say outside 3-4 occasion always left me a bit disappointed(Maine Road was great though and Earls court), hated it at finsbury park - Go let it out I wasnโt a big fan with the super long outro - i only remember one great version from Hindu times (Italy?) - controversial take but is there a definitive live version of live forever?
From the solo era I always thought broken arrow could have been done better live.

More often than not Noel sounded really out of tune on Acquiesce and Liam always fucked the lyrics up. Still wouldn't take it out of the set but they never performed it nearly as good as the record.

Acquiesce would be my go-to example for a song which seems a lot more exciting live than on record, to be honest.

Hindu Times is a good shout, it never seemed quite right, maybe because the record version sounds sped up and Liam's vocal a bit chipmunky to my ears and totally different live. SCYHO also sounded weak live to me. It may just be a case of Liam not being able to nail much in the later years as I can't think of many examples from the 90s.

They definitely nailed The Hindu Times, that was immense live

Stop Crying Your Heart Out stands out as that was always pretty ropey. Noel also used to say Wonderwall as they played it too fast but the Maine Road version is immense. Hindu Times always sounded a bit ragged - awful on the TOTP special.

Much better than the album version in my opinion - the Finsbury Park version is brilliant. Better vocals from Liam, the harmonies between Liam and Noel much more powerful too.

Interesting topic and Iโll be honest, over the years Iโve revisited their live material less and less. Call me crazy, but I think as both Noel and Liam have matured, theyโre both doing some of their best live material NOW, rather than back in the day. Some of the Oasis songs they both do currently are really sounding brilliant. (Sans โGo Let It Outโ with Noel...not sure whatโs going on there but it still doesnโt work for me).

"I'm Outta Time" - there was always something off about it, especially with Liam's voice getting knackered towards the end. When he sang it solo for the first time in Belfast some 4 years ago, it felt like he finally nailed it.

I think this version of Some Might Say is absolute class, stick headphones on and blow your ear drums out:
I always thought they did an excellent job live, I guess maybe Acquiesce I'd agree with a bit because Liam never sung the second verse but that's a very minor thing for me.

Slide Away (electric version), sadly.
Their best ever song, too.

He sang the second verse a few times early on in 1995, such as during the gig at Cliffs Pavilion in Southend in April 1995, as you can see on Live by the Sea: Interestingly enough, when they performed on the song on the White Room right around the same time, Liam only sings the first verse (though he also looks like he may have been a bit somewhere else during that performance). I believe that there are a few other times in Spring/Summer 1995 when he also sings the correct second verse, but by the time of the US tour with Scott McLeod in the fall, he had fallen into only singing the first verse.

IIRC he sings the second verse at Glasto 1995 too.
But yeah it was very rare, shame. It's my favourite verse from it.

Stop Crying Your Heart out is superb on TOTP for me. I love every live version (even glasto) as soon as both of them harmonise on that 2nd chorus.
I think they really sounded at their peak around that Earls Court gig and other videos I've seen of them around that time.
Maine Road and a few others sound way too fast for my liking. I don't get why they used to play like that. It really doesn't make for a good listen for me.
I dont think the OP was far off saying Live Forever. I actually think Noel's live version on the Supersonic doc hits me emotionally more than any other live version, despite me thinking it's Liams vocals that make that incredible melody shine on the studio version. Certainly don't get why Noel thinks he can't sing that because "Liam does it better" and then butchers most songs Liam genuinely does smash him out the park on.

Acquiesce would be my go-to example for a song which seems a lot more exciting live than on record, to be honest. Oh totally! I heard the album version after listening to There and Then on loop for months (I had made a cassette copy and I had it in my walkman). It was so underwhelming. As for songs they rarely nailed live, most are already listed here. - Go Let It Out (the electric guitar is stupid) - Stop Crying Your Heart Out (Liam never got that one right live. The song needs singing not screaming and Liam's voice was fucked after HC) - Wonderwall when they played it with an electric guitar - Falling Down (the atmosphere of the song is hard to recreate live) - Don't Look Back in Anger (when he played it with heavy distortion) There are songs that are a million times better live though: - Acquiesce - Fade In-Out (fucking hell that one's amazing) - The Swamp Song

The only live versions I like from Stop Crying Your Heart are Lyon 2002 and Milan 2005. My favourite version of Wonderwall is the DOYS version. Another song they never really nailed live is Sunday Morning Call, the way they played was really boring, could have done a lot more with it. Just like the few times they played Where Did It All Go Wrong?
Little by Little is also a song that sounds only good live. The album version is soooooo boring.

I actually think that glasto is slightly better than its reputation but good god SCYHO in particular is awful.

I never had a problem with the live versions of Stop Crying Your Heart Out or Acquiesce. But the live electric version of Wonderwall wasn't the best and Gas Panic maybe a great song but the live version they did on their Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants tour, the guitar solo at the end of the song was far too long. Also, I don't like Noel's live version of Supersonic.

Wonderwall Electric is by far my favourite version, think they did it on Be Here Now tour and SOTSOG tour.
Noel's guitar tone on it is awesome.
Prefer Noel's full band electric version of Don't Look Back in Anger as well.

I tried to listen to these versions of SCYHO but I cringed so hard especially on the Kermit version of 2005... he sings it so well on the record but Liam didn't do soft back then. He started doing it with BE but he rarely does still. Nice work on that version of Wonderwall though.
