It's only become apparent in the last few years how timeless a song this is. Of course it was always huge but the popularity of many songs often don't extend beyond 20 years before they fade away so its not a given that it's legacy would be secured further down the line.
A whole new younger generation have discovered Wonderwall and run away with it though. Add to the nostalgia of Oasis and people pining for a reunion, it seems to add further fascination to the band.
Not that lists of 'greatest albums' make a blind bit of difference but Rolling Stone magazines newly released top 500 albums, which merely tries to capture the zeitgeist, has the two classic Oasis albums on there for the first time and relatively quite high up for an American publication. Seems that even critics are cottoning on to a renewed burst of popularity for Oasis.
Marketing strategy has a hell of a lot to do with it - a band's success and legacy isn't just secured when they are releasing music but rather how they connect with newer and younger fans years later. In that sense, the Supersonic documentary has been a godsend for the band in addition to re-releases for the band's 1990s albums. If Oasis management can stagger other unique releases in the forthcoming years (e.g. a live compilation would be great, or go a bit more leftfield in strategy and 'drop' things from the vault like demos on streaming services or Soundcloud) then they will be able to maintain interest (P.S. See the interest that was generated in just releasing a fairly standard tune like Don't Stop a few months back).

Actually a really good article that, thanks for sharing! Another thing about Wonderwall is how perfect the recording was. For a band that mostly opted for a raw sound over subtlety, the Wonderwall production is the latter. It's delicate in its arrangement, you have the little guitar riffs that sparkle here and there, the hypnotic mellotrons and Alan White's drumming is just the most perfect drumming on an Oasis song ever.

That was a great read, thanks for sharing! For those who haven't clicked, it's an oral history of Wonderwall, how it got made, and people's perspectives on it now. Lots of good quotes from Liam, and we also hear from Marcus Russell and Owen Morris, among others.

I think that Wonderwall and Oasis in general will always be remembered as there will always be new fans coming through and older fans will always be interested in what Noel and Liam are doing.

I think it's safe to say after more than 25 years that Oasis are one of those bands and Wonderwall is one of those songs

Btw it's getting around 600-700k streams a day and it's standing at 989.380.263, so it should reach 1 billion by the end of october, probably even before

I once worked with a guy who said "Wonderwall, I loathe that song". I hope he is the last Rolling Stone Mag subscriber Sure, there's dozens of tunes I like better. One billion plays C'mon you know.

For Wonderwall, somewhat over 10% is listened to in the UK and for DLBIA that number is higher, something like 20% or so. Wonderwall hopefully will be only the second pre-2000 song that hits 1 billion streams on Spotify, after Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody and just before their Don't Stop Me Now catches up.

So that proves "Wonderwall" does amazingly well everywhere.

60's Love Me Do 90's Wonderwall 60s Hey Jude/ Paint it black 70s Bohemian Rhapsody/ Stairway to heaven 80s Money for nothing/ Sweet child o' mine 90s Smells like teen spirit/ Wonderwall Any better ideas? I'm not particularly happy about these 80s choices, but then again, I'm not particularly happy about the 80s.

I think it's great that Wonderwall and Don't Look Back In Anger have so many streams on Spotify and I wonder how many streams these songs have and Oasis songs in general on other streaming sites.
