Saying that the types of music you don't like "aren't music" is stupid as fuck. I don't like country. It's still music. I don't like soul, but it's still music. I fucking loath christian music, but I still consider it music. So I'd appreciate that you don't stawman my opinion.

Saying that any type of music you don't like "isn't music" is stupid as fuck. That's like, your opinion, man. Also, you ought to learn to recognize hyperbole when you see it.

This should not be an unpopular opinion. Sadly this kind of genre elitism is all too common in rock music circles. 0% DRUGS 0% DANCING WOMEN 0% VIOLENCE 100% TALENT 0% AUTO TUNE 100% SOUL AND PASSION Btw, if you happen to think rock today is all dead and gone, let me tell you about these guys called Greta van Fleet... fucking saviors of rock, dude!

Let's put it this way, music and maybe even world be so much better without rap. I fucking love some songs and albums but I would sign immediately that all rap music ever recorded disappears and that nobody ever record rap song in future and that we don't even know what rap is. Listen to Kendrick Lamar. You listen to what I am saying and read my post again. That's my opinion, yes, maybe unpopular one but then go and read title of this thread. And Kendrick Lamar is shit, if you said Prti Bee Gee than ok.

Influence on music scene, influence on young generations... Making many musicians to not push forward with their music and just add rap parts... Remember how many hits songs we had with rap part as verses and then some pop chorus. Those songs would be so much better if they actually tried to write verses, rapping is easiest form of music to make.
Creating many self proclaimed geniuses as Kanye West, allowing criminals and gangsters to become ,,respected musicians" just because they can rhyme few words.
Did Lennon and Jagger shoot on each other? Look at Tupac, The Notorious B.I.G... Fucking Kanye married fucking Kim Kardashian. Kendrick as quick as he got famous made song with Taylor Swift.
Yes, music is music and there are idiots in every genre but I think that rap made more damage than benefits for music and society. I don't think that you can say for any other genre.

I don't understand the top line argument either. Majority of hip-hop and rap doesn't glorify that, it's an honest portrayal of the fucked up societies they've been brought up in. It's probably the most original form of music these days because you can't fake all that. Violence is endemic and naturalised in these communities (again a societal problem), and it shouldn't surprise you if that continues in their life even after they've made it rich and famous. It portray ugly truths, but true nonetheless. For sure, that all sounds like a posturing white middle class Guardian writer/BBC 6 Music DJ 'whitesplaining' these issues (people who in reality don't give a fuck), but the opposite argument that it should be banned just gets peddled out all the time from 'back in my day' sorts. I also don't understand the argument that Kanye is a dick with his behaviour when we venture on to an Oasis forum of all places (like the Gallaghers, I find him amusing). If he was white and played rock, he'd be hailed as 'the last of the great rockstars' because of all the japes he gets up to. For myself, I don't listen to hip-hop or rap, I can't keep up with the lyrics and I won't pretend I understand what most tracks are about, barring the most explicit and obvious. The sampling and backing tracks are really cool is all I can say. But to say rap doesn't have a place when it speaks the truth for so many is really weird.

I'd rather listen to Nickelback's Rockstar.
Look at mainstream pop in the 60's, 70's and 80's. Then look at mainstream pop offered today. I do not see how any rational person wouldn't see a decline in lyrics and melody overall.

Sure there's rap music like that but there's plenty that isn't. If that's the reason you don't like hip-hop dig around a little more than flipping through the radio. A good chunk of hip-hop is regarded as having the most the most impressive lyrics of any genre and I'd wholeheartedly agree. A lot of pop music today incorporates rapping which has next to no emphasis on melody. It's all to do with rhythm and flow. Think percussive. Apples and oranges, both work. You've got to remember no one remembers the shit stuff back and the 60's, 70's and 80's. That stuff is forgotten so presents a bias with everything we hear today.

My favorite band of all time is The Bee Gees. So I don't think music from that time period is forgotten.

Are you forgetting all the terrible people in rock and other genres? How has rap music damaged music and society? Exactly. I'd like to see another mainstream pop artist write lyrical poetry on the same level as Eminem or GZA, for example. That shit ain't easy lol. Sure, there are a lot of rappers who try to glamourise crime and flex their money and women. I personally dont like that form of hip-hop, when its encouraging violence/crime. But, most of the timr rappers are talking about the violent lifestyle they grew up with and how hip-hop helped them escape that lifestyle. Wu-Tang is a great example of this, and they also rap about science, spirituality and love, amongst other things. They are 100x more lyrically diverse than rock'n'roll lyricists.

It's a blatantly silly opinion that anyone with any self-awareness can dismiss upon sight. Rap is music, and has given us some of the most respected and loved albums of the past five decades. You don't have to like any of it, of course, but saying it isn't music or that the world would be better off with it being eradicated from time is stuff that deserves taking the piss out of, not debating. As long as stuff like this exists, and it always will, it will resonate. It's art, it's skilled, it's powerful. You don't have to like it, but don't expect to be taken seriously if you deny it's existence as music.

If you grew up with it and have dug around I'm sure you've heard how wonderfully diverse, creative and lyrically dense it can be as Jack has just mentioned. I suspect it's for other reasons you dislike hip-hop and that's fine. Everyone's taste is different. The "bitches and bling" thing is a lazy cheapshot though. I didn't say all music from that time period is forgotten. I love music from every decade. It's the shit stuff which is forgotten. There was shit stuff back then just as there is now. The difference is we're not exposed to the shit stuff from the past because no one plays it and that presents us with a bias. Likewise music has greatly evolved from what was going on from the 60's, 70's and 80's. If you're taste largely based around music of that time period or music influenced from that time period you're less likely to enjoy music that's notably removed from it.

I give you credit though that you are honest enough to admit it.
Of course I can dismiss music. That's my right as a person with unique independent musical tastes from you. Those genres do not do it for me. I do like when they are more incorporated with rock. Say, Arctic Monkeys, AM. I also like bands such as Leisure and Jungle who kind of experiment with blended styles. But outright hip-hop just isn't for me. And rap just makes me cringe. I hate the delivery in the same way that I abhor screamo. It's grating to my ears and I don't need any other reason than that. I do not gain pleasure from it.
