It's all a matter of opinion of course. I was just sorting out my Itunes and was thinking a lot of band's I have on it had that one off great album then just faded into so-so careers or faded away entirely.
Razorlight, I think Up All Night is one of my favorite album's from that mid 00's boom in British Indie. Johnny Borrell was a bit of a prat but the band had some great tunes from that debut, like Rip It Up, Don't go Back to Dalton, Golden Touch, Vice etc.... They had a great stand alone single Somewhere Else. Big things were on for them, but Borrell got himself a actress girlfriend (Kirsten Dunst), caught some Bono-ism's, started to believe the hype and lost their way. The self titled second album has some good stuff on it (In The Morning and America) but not a patch on their debut imo. They lost all their members bar Borrell and they are still about today but to not much fanfare.
The Kooks, I know they are still popular today. But I never felt they touched their debut album Inside In Inside Out, that's a great indie pop album.
Hard Fi (Remember them lol), Stars of CCTV is a great little album. The Singer caught a bit of the Johnny Borrell's and waffled about how great they were. Took a age to release a second album and lost their way.
The View, Hat's off to The Busker was a very good little debut album. Sure they tried to hard to be another Libertines and they had a ton of hype. Nothing really came close to topping that album since from them and they ended up been a opening band at festivals by the end.
CSS, a fun little dance pop Brazilian band who's debut Cansei De Ser Sexy was and still is a great listen and their frontwoman Lovefoxxx was a bundle full of fun. Never came close to topping their debut, lost their main songwriter and two other members and they went a little too serious for my liking.
The Bravery, a fantastic self titled debut album and lead off single in Honest Mistake. They lost me with their last two albums.

The Strokes - Is This It - Still a massive live draw to see them, but apart from one song Juicebox, everything since has been forgettable, nothing comes close to the first album
The Enemy - We Live and Die in these Towns - Some good stuff since but it was all down hill commercially until they split a few years back sadly. The gigs were always wild though right until the end.

Could't agree more about Razorlight and Jet.
I've seen Razorlight twice on their peak and met the guys in person at that time. They were all friendly, but Johnny Borrell was a stereotype of narcist.
I loved Jet's debut album. They even supported Oasis at MSG in 2005. Time flies...

Most bands fall in to this category honestly.
Look back and you'll find scores of bands that had one great record, and then a bunch of average at best records. I could argue that this has more to do with hype, culture, exposure, label interference, etc. than it does with actual songwriting/playing ability and the like.
Great records tend to capture a moment in time just as much as they are great records in isolation.
Living in the U.S... Oasis falls in this category honestly.

The Stone Roses, The Sex Pistols, NWA, The La's, Lauryn Hill, 50 Cent, Evanescence...
Happens quite a bit, really.

american football... maybe don't count because of the 15 years between their first and second albums but they were the first i thought of...
and halsey... put out an amazing gritty pop album and then her second one was mass media garbage... the most disappointing career in pop recently because i absolutely love badlands...

Kasabian- The third one was ok but their debut was brilliant. They came out named after a serial killers runaway driver with real menace. Songs like Reason for Treason and Club Foot have balls. Perfect cross of XTRMTR Primal Scream and Oasis. After that they obviously sacked the guy with the talent and came out with derogatory indie bullshit

I can't blame most of the guys leaving the band Borrell seems like hard work. The Datsuns would be another Aussie rock band like Jet, who had a storming debut album then faded away.

I love The Kooks' 2nd album but nothing really after that. Also I wouldn't personally include The View in this thread.
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club would be my answer here.

Think it came out in 2006. The tracklist always made me laugh. It had a song on it called "Jackie Big Tits". I was friends with a girl named Jackie and she did in fact of big tits. Strikingly beautiful overall.

Probably better to make a list of band who doesn't have this problem?

the killers, nothing came close to hot fuss. Not the worlds biggest Killers guy but do appreciate some tunes of theirs. Their debut is prob their best but don't count out "When You Were Young". That song soars.

I think sams town is basically the fumes of hot fuss, there is some good tunes on it but overall its not that memorable as a whole album. from there I really don't bother with them, they got abit too 80s pop for me.

Mostly all debuts here so I was wondering has any act ever released one great album in the middle of their career with everything either side of it bang average?

Good question, just had a scan through my library and these were the ones that jumped out at me: - Adele (21)- Beirut (The Flying Club Cup)- Chance the Rapper (Acid Rap)- J Cole (Forest Hill Drive)- Future (DS2)I would personally also argue Drake with Never Was the Same, but most people prefer his earlier album Take Care so it wouldn't be the best example.

But Beirut - thought they still had a lot of goodwill creatively even if they’re not massive? Also, isn’t Chance The Rapper also massively revered with his albums (I wouldn’t know as I don’t listen but got the impression he’d released a spate of great albums). I’ve got another one to add to the list - Gorillaz/Demon Days. Nothing great either side of that album I don’t think (arguably the same for Blur).
