Who Built the Moon and As You Were both sound like some of the most "finished" Gallagher releases since the 90s. I think it's fair to say that WBTM is probably one song too long, and has Noel himself has said, poorly paced once the instrumentals kick in. The first part is in the wrong place, and should have been after STMHTF or BCWYWF. I also think it's fair to say - and I said this at the time - that AYW is maybe one song too long. Just that middle section after Paper Crown seems to go on forever. Personally, I'm not a fan of Chinatown so would have had that dropped, never mind as a bloody single (even though it's sweet enough and doesn't take itself too seriously).

Being one song too long is an incredibly modest drawback compared to the tragic flaws that exist in pretty much every Gallagher release since...well, 1998.

I love WBTM, just wanted more of it!

While The Song Remains the Same is probably the best song he's released since 2000, and IMO Who Built the Moon sounds like an album where he decided he didn't actually need to finish the songs if they had "interesting" production I'll be honest, I have not listened to Who Built The Moon? nearly as much as I listened to Chasing Yesterday or NGHFB. The songs don't have the staying power and all around, I feel are weaker. It's a fun album. It's a good album, but the fact remains I moved past it very quickly. 3 weeks tops I think. The best thing about the album is just that it sounds different from his norm. But you're right, the songs probably aren't finished. She Taught Me How To Fly, for example. I think it's a good song. It's my favorite on the album. The chorus is amazing. But the versus? Needed a ton of work. The song is too long and too repetitive. He could have improved it simply by putting more work into different lyrics in the verses. I think she taught me how to fly can get away with being repetitive because it is so driving. It's also structured uniquely. I agree a 5 minute song shouldn't be repetitive but this song pulls it off. It's one of my all time favorite songs. I just wish Jess Greenfield or female vocal was on it. It works well live.

Oh yeah, it's great. Would make my top 10 easily of Noel's Post-Oasis. Probably top 5. I just think with more varied lyrics in the versus would have made it a perfect song. And that to me is really what strikes me as something being unfinished. Beady Eye suffered this the most. Great ideas. Good execution. But maybe if they just spent a little more time on unique lyrics, rather than repetitive phrases, a lot of their songs would have been better received. Start Anew, I'm speaking to you.
Combining a repetitive melody with repetitive lyrics should be a sin in most songwriting, in my opinion. No amount of musical flair can cover it up. One of those is fine, but together, it just makes it stand out for bad reasons usually. Thankfully, I have pretty low standards, but I've seen others trash this.

Yeah I'd say 'doesnt sound finished' is a kind way of saying it is shit, which I'd agree with. I don't think the production was any better than Chasing Yesterday, and the best song TMWBTM would have fit on there fine. He doesnt need Holmes to tell him what to do, he's Noel fucking Gallagher. There’s no way on earth Noel would have been able to replicate the cinematic soundscape of Man Who Built... on any of his previous albums. It would have ended up as something plodding and turgid.

I don't understand how people can listen to The Man Who Built the Moon and not see what Holmes brings to the table. That track is dark, cinematic, and in places it just sounds fucking demented with all that noisy brass - yet it's still audibly a Noel Gallagher song. Nothing like that was achieved over his first two LPs, nothing like that was even attempted.

Good call on Start Anew. It starts off so beautiful but the end is an example of bad repetition. Even more so the middle interlude is way too overproduced. I much prefer the tender-like guitar from the acoustic versions and the backwards version of dreaming of some space.

Gutted I arrived back from my holiday one day too late to have heard about these tickets going on sale. Typical.

Got my ticket delivered this morning already! For which gig? Has London Palladium been sent out yet? Edinburgh. You’ll get a dispatch email from the ticket provider. Some don’t send them out until 10 days before the gig itself.
