SOTSOG is amazing. I don't think there's one bad track on it. The production on Where Did It All Go Wrong is a bit sedate, true but the rest of it is amazing. I do admit though that Noel could have put out a much better album when you see the tracks he had written at the time. The problem is that had he used tracks like Cigarettes In Hell or Just Getting Older he'd practically be singing half the album. I think SOTSOG gets a bad rap, certainly from Noel. It has some of his finest songwriting on it. I mean who could argue with Roll It Over, Sunday Morning Call, Gas Panic! and Go Let It Out? The greatest Oasis album in my opinion after Definitely Maybe and Be Here Now. I love the album too, not perfect, they still had a bit of that mojo, even if the band were very fractured, but its sentiment was very genuine, so many great songs were born on that period, also including some HC b-sides and It's a Crime, Noel definitely matured at that point, his mind changed, he couldn't live with all those 90's excess anymore. You can see that on his lyrics, they became more reflective, some of his best lyrics were from that era btw, it wasn't about magic pies anymore, now it was about let's make them believe in us, where things went wrong, getting older, who heals love, plastic people, he wrote about what he was feeling at the time, plus he found a good producer to shape his songs.

You've got it spot on. Pretty much what you just said sums it up. Those lyrics really show a new side to Noel which is a large part of why I love those songs so much.

Would anyone have been disappointed if Noel released a little solo album in spring 2000 that looked like this? Not a bad side effort while “Oasis” rests up, licks it’s wounds and dreams it all up again....
Full On One Way Road It’s A Crime Carry Us All Idler’s Dream Solve My Mystery Just Getting Older Where Did It Go Wrong? Sunday Morning Call (As Long as They've Got) Cigarettes in Hell

Didn't Noel begin to love Lyla after hearing it played live and seeing the crowd go crazy for it?

I like Lyla, but just like with Shock of the Lightning(another post 90's high light) the lyrics are... not very good. I would enjoy them far more if I didn't know English.

I don't see Noel or the band as having 'phoned it in' on DOYS, tbf.
The first 8 songs of that album are brilliant.

He had to be taking the piss with some of the decisions though - the whole Come On Outside/Record Machine fiasco (putting in its place Ain’t Got Nothin and High Horse - clearly b-sides quality that shouldn’t have ended up on an album), pseudo-philosophical crap like Nature of Reality, pre-school George Harrison in yet another fine streak of shite from Gem called To Be Where Theres Life. A shame about Soldier On which I really like, it deserved some real belters beforehand if it were to work as a meditative closer.

While I agree with most of what you're saying, I do think that High Horse is a nice interlude song. It definitely could've been replaced by Come on Outside, yes. TBWTL isn't that bad, though. I like the Richard Fearless version, though, but the DOYS version is out there and different for Oasis, so I commend them for that. I think a good tracklisting would've been: Bag it Up The Turning Waiting for the Rapture The Shock of the Lightning I'm Outta Time To Be Where There's Life (Richard Fearless version) Come on Outside I Believe in All Falling Down Boy With the Blues Soldier On

The bassline should've been louder though. Either that or the guitars should've sounded like they did in the live versions.

To Be Where There's Life is a good track, but it's a shame they couldn't capture it how they got it to sound live. And the reason for Record Machine has been well documented that Liam simply didn't turn up to sign it or, when he did, it wasn't judged good enough. Guessing Come On Outside just didn't make the cut, which meh, I'm not that arsed about.

By no means an Oasis classic but it would have really really nailed the first 8 tracks as being heavy stuff. And with a Liam vocal on top of it? Would have been one of the best tunes on the album no doubt.

Wasn't Come On Outside (would have been called Come On, Its Alright on DOYS I believe) a candidate for a potential single? I thought I read that somewhere. I also believe you could hear it playing on the Gold and Silver and Sunshine doc, just a shame those vocals weren't completed along with Record Machine.
