Are teenage dreams so hard to beat?/Everytime she walks down the street Another girl in the neighbourhood/Wish she was mine, she looks so good
John O'Neill writes and Feargal Sharkey delivers the essence of teenage male angst and longing for girls in a glorious two and a half minute song.

"Sailing hardships through broken harbors out on the waves in the night"
That may just be one of the greatest lines to open an album, too.

Motorcycle Emptiness - Manic Street Preachers
"Culture sucks down words Itemise loathing and feed yourself smiles"
The commodification of emotions making it hard to live in an authentic and sincere world. And to think that song is 28 years old too!
Nebraska - Bruce Springsteen
"I saw her standing on her front lawn Just twirling her baton Me and her went for a ride sir And ten innocent people died."
Didn't strike me how chilling this line was until I read a bit about it about the world we live in and the close proximity between innocence (girl twirling her baton) and evil (the subsequent killing spree). And then Bruce confirming the existential doom of all life at the end - "You wanna know why I did what I did? Well sir I guess there's just a meanness in this world". Fuckin hell Boss! There's actually an interesting comparison between Thunder Road and Nebraska. A male and female character both going for a drive, and the car representing escapism and dreams in the former, and in the latter, a rusty husk that conjures up nightmare and violence. Of the same world, but couldn't be more polar opposite.

Don't start me talking I could talk all night My mind goes sleepwalking While I'm putting the world to right 'Oliver's Army'- Elvis Costello The opening soundtrack to every internet or public house political debate involving a combination of misguided, sincere and trolling individuals It's funny you saying about Oliver's Army being an unintentionally perfect soundtrack to internet bickering. I was thinking about The Jam's 'Start!' the other day, and how it's a perfect summary of social media and other forms of internet 'connectivity'. "It's not important for you to know my name, nor I to know yours; If we communicate for two minutes only, it will be enough."...People talking to strangers so that they can feel connected to the world and people. (Hi, I'm theyknowwhatimean. Pleased to meet you, guigsysEstring. ) "But, knowing there's someone in this world [who] feels as desperate as me..."...Same as above: people are driven online because they feel lonely, or like they're missing out on something, in their own lives in the real world. "It doesn't matter if we never meet again, what we have said will always remain."...That thing of once something is said on the internet there is a record of it there forever, even if you try and delete it. "But, knowing there's someone in this life [who] loves with a passion called hate..."...The internet is a breeding ground for hate. "What you give is what you get!"...If you read and talk about mindless crap, and participate in spreading silly memes about, all day long, you can't complain if your culture seems to become increasingly infantilised. I wonder what other lyrics from late 70s/early 80s alternative pop songs could be applied to 21st Century western society as it appears in the 2010s...

Not opening lyrics, but in the end and this is one of my most favourite lyrics all the time.
'Cause years have passed and things have changed And I move anyway I want to go And I'll never forget the feelin' I got When I heard that you'd got home
And I'll never forget the smile on my face 'Cause I knew where you would be And if you're in the Crown tonight have a drink on me But go easy Step lightly, yeah Stay free
