Dear Noel, I know you can break my heart whenever you want. Please refrain from doing so on the last track of your albums and EPs. First, “Dead in the Water” and now “Sail On”......not fair bro!!

As others have said, this is exactly what I'd Pick You Every Time or She Is Love should have been. Noel has been trying to write a song like this one for years but I think he's finally succeeded. It's not groundbreaking, but it's a lovely little tune. It's got that typical Noel bittersweetness that we all love. Is it wrong I never had a problem with She Is Love or Id Pick You Every Time? I enjoy both of them from time to time They don't deserve the hate they get.

So Sail On is not available as free download for record buyers from Noel's official store? -> We got 4 out of 5 tracks on the EP? Isn't that a bit silly, Noel?

Not feeling Sail On personally.
A really weak EP for me and I actually think he’s got a cheek calling it an EP when it’s 3 new songs only!

I don't like She Is Love at all,I think is one of the worsts of that album. But IPYE is a great little song. Loved it since the first time I heard it

“Made up my mind” is lifted straight from Id Pick You Every Time. I like Sail On and IPYET, it was mine and the wife’s first dance when we got married. Hopefully lots more Noel b-sides to come this year

Sail On is ok on the first few listens, lets not go nuts here. Fine little b-side, that's about it. It's just a relief to think "oh it's not shit?" after the shear horror of Black Star Dancing and the total forgettability of Rattling Rose. As a collection of songs if this is the best of the upcoming EPs we're in trouble.

I think I had too much hopes with Sail On, so it's a bit of a let down for me. It sounds like a mix of things we already heard but with really bland vocals.
Weakest song in the EP for me. Will try to listen to it again later, maybe I'm just in a bad mood for it.

I'm writing my review then.
Black Star Dancing
When this came out I was not invested at all honestly. It's not because is disco stuff and that, the song is just bland. It's a fun groove but nothing else. Even the guitar solo feels so out of place. The melodies in the verses and the chorus are not even catchy and I feel like they won't resonate with me anytime soon. I mean,it's not that I hate the song,he got worse songs (Mucky fucking Fingers must be his worst song of all and that one sticks with Classic Noel style) and I can listen to it without complaining. Overall is definitely a 5/10.
Rattling Rose
I listened this one live on YouTube before the studio version came out and I thought it was fucking brilliant. Some people here says that is forgettable but I don't feel that way. He perfectioned his songwriting mixing the mood of Chasing Yesterday songs with the Who Built The Moon production/vibe. The air instrumentation when the bridge comes along is beautiful and the drum rythm in the whole track is brilliant. The american sound of it fits perfect with Noel's voice and must be my favourite on the entire EP. And the Christopher Cross's Ride Like The Wind part is the best part of the song obviously. A strong 8/10
Sail On
I was intrigued with this one because Black Star Dancing and Rattling Rose are so different from each other so I didn't know what to expect honestly. Sail On is a beautiful little tune that fits good for an ending. I agree that it sounds like I'd Pick You Everytime but there's nothing wrong with that since I love that song. Beautiful melodies and I think I can hear some fingerpicking on a mandoline in the back but not too sure about it. Must be a 7'5/10
OVERALL:
The first EP out of three leaves me with a good taste but if somethings wrong with the content of it I must say its the track flow. Its not like it doesn't flow well, they're just 3 songs and that's impossible. But the 3 of them are so different from each other. So I don't get the concept of separating songs in EPs if the first one is so variated already. If I got to find an explanation I would say that this EP consists of Noel looking back at his solo career. While Black Star Dancing sounds like a b-side from Who Built The Moon, Rattling Rose could've fit perfectly in Chasing Yesterday. And since I'd Pick You Everytime is a b-side from the first LP,maybe Sail On could've been a b-side from that time. Its the only logical conclussion I can end up into. So yeah, overall I would give it a 7/10.
Solid material with some misses Really curious about what's coming next. Noel said that the next single will be purely electronic like the Madchester sound, which doesn't excite me too much. But seing what happened with the first one,we can't judge the EPs from the single. Also I hope that the next one includes 4 songs instead of 3. Because now we gotta wait to September until the next one.
Cheers!

It's just a relief to think "oh it's not shit?" after the shear horror of Black Star Dancing and the total forgettability of Rattling Rose. As a collection of songs if this is the best of the upcoming EPs we're in trouble. Yeah I agree. Disappointing to see those two remixes on the EP today, thought we would have got some new tunes not crappy remixes. Yeah Sail On is brand new so we may be overreacting but like you say i didnt listen to it and think oh god its crap. Rattling Rose is 'okay' but I just think it sounds like some lift music from some french department store or something. Black Star Rising has got a bit better in my view but i dont know, as its Noel i just expect so much more Loved his last album a lot of good tunes on it but still wish he would stick to safe territory instead of being like the next David Bowie and reinventing himself as much as he can etc. Saw Noel at Heaton Park last week which was great but yeah give me the traditional songs anytime

He has a lovely way with melody. Vocals sound a bit perfect/clean sounding for my taste and slightly cheesy lyrics. HFB lyrics in general make me cringe more than oasis lyrics ever did. " moon and stars above," pretty balloon" "prettiest girl I've ever seen." Just lazy bullshit! Whatever happened to "take me walking, to where you played when you were young".Nice song though, my wife liked it.

I don't get why he puts something different (BSD) and than on the same EP he puts "sail on". I mean, if you want to make something different you have to be coherent with this idea and you shouldn t put something Just to make the 80% of the fanbase Happy IMO What do you think?

I think that's because its a retrospective EP. One song of each style. BSD is equivalent to WBTM? RR is equivalent to CY and SO is equivalent to NGHFB

Sail on is quality, great tunes being released by the Chief. That tune is a proof that all the haters just have to shut up and accept Noel experimenting with new sounds, though I think it sounds the most "familiar" among all the songs on the new EP.
